The STI oil pickups are fine for street driving, i've talked to some subaru techs with many years experience, and they've only ever seen pickup failures from a lot of hard turning. If you do any autocross or racing of any sort, you should upgrade it. Really in my opinion, everyone should upgrade from the stock oil pan, pickup, and baffle, it's a great investment to help protect your engine from oil starvation, and you get a larger capacity with aftermarket pans.
