Anne Frank was a childhood hero of mine- and remains a hero- for doing what so few twice her age and far more educated could ever do. She made an experience so horrific that it’s difficult to put into words relatable to people all over the world, especially children. WWII, that level of racism and disgust, the Holocaust, and even the idea of just mass-level conflict was foreign to me as a teen from a small town.
The simple writings of a young girl I had never met made it understandable, relatable, and horrific in a way that shocked me to my core. I recall watching the old Shelley Winters version of the movie and sobbing in front of my classmates, going home, and just reading everything I could find on her, her family, the Holocaust, and the war as a whole. Hell, I sat and asked my grandpa (a WWII vet) to tell me everything he could remember.
It’s just so rare to find someone who can move you with their words, someone who can reach a group of people so clearly and deeply. The fact she was a child- and writing only to herself- when she did so is just so profound. She’s a brilliant marker of history and should be celebrated as such 🤍

Anne Frank was taken to Berglen Belsen and she was with her sister Margot and they both died. Otto was the only survivor among all of them. I went to Anne Frank house in Amsterdam and it was so surreal that she was actually there. So sad she died. RIP Anne Frank I read her dairy at the age of 12. She was very mature for her age and very young too.

I was able to visit the Anne Frank house in June. It was an incredible experience to see the actual photos and pictures and clippings that she had hung on her wall. It was just so sad. Their hiding place was much bigger than I thought but still I can’t imagine never being able to leave.

My English teacher set us both 'The Diary of Anne Frank' and 'Hiroshima' while every other class was reading Shakespeare. I was 14 at the time but at age 46, I still have an interest in the personal accounts from those who survived. None of my friends or my sister read The Diary of Anne Frank so I don't think it was required here in New Zealand. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realised my English teacher was Jewish and she had survived the war before coming to New Zealand. She never spoke of her experience but I wonder if it was painful to hear what her students opinions were about the war.

That's the power of dehumanization and the sad part is it's still with us. This is why it's so important to not buy into anyone who will tell you that another person is lesser than, regardless of the reason. No matter who you are or what you believe, you must remember that those different than yourself are every bit as human as you are. The scariest part is how easy it is to get people to go along with this sort of thing.

There is a world of difference between the Holocaust and what is going on within Israel presently. To conflate the two is to do the most massive disservice to the horror of the Holocaust. The death of innocents is always a tragedy, but there is a definite difference between the unfortunate loss of life in war and the targeted systematic extermination of a particular group. I would suggest seeking out news from sources other than the mainstream as they appear to have a very clear anti-Israel bias. That's not to say that the Israelis have conducted the war perfectly and couldn't do more to protect civilians, but a genocide it most certainly is not.

The Jews in WWII did nothing to bring the wrath of the Nazis down upon them other than exist. Attempting to compare the 2 on the same level is disingenuous at best. Religion I can understand questioning, but taking such bountiful proof of things like the earth being round, the Holocaust having happened, and the world being so old, yet still closing your eyes soo tightly and screaming “it’s not real!” like a child getting spooked by a shadow, is just sad and laughable.

My second cousin Charlotte died in Auschwitz and was closer to Margot Frank’s age, but she looked so much like Anne! With them, I see the lives that were lost and the dreams that were stolen.
Anne Frank’s legacy is incredibly bittersweet, she wanted to be a professional writer and didn’t get to see her impact on the world and history.
