We all fall prey to nostalgia at some point, try as we might to resist it. Nostalgia is everywhere, from food to tech to even art, and especially fragrances, where the ties to our emotions are so hardwired. Nostalgia consumption is real and it even contributes to that oh, so precious brand loyalty. Eau de Guerlain is anemoia, sure, that inexplicable nostalgia for an idealized past one hasn't lived through, but it's also more than that. The chic, the unattainable, the sheer elegance and class, all encompassed in Jean Paul Guerlain's Eau from 1974.
No joke: In 1987, my mum took my cousin Steph & I on a one-week cruise on the ship THE NORWAY. There on board, was an extraordinary little fragrance shop. I sampled a couple colognes & "des toilettes" and the one you describe in this video was one of the ones I had sampled. Instantly unique, fresh and fairly subtle but classy, I immediately bought that same "Eau de Guerlain" cologne. Like you, on stumbling upon your video, I had literally JUST said to my husband who just finally found again and bought this favorite scent of mine that Guerlain had created the perfect fragrance with it. I was 16 back then, soon after finding (& losing virginity to) my first love, who too could not get enough of it. Back in the U.S. after that cruise, I used the cologne daily and about a year later I had used it all. It appeared to be discontinued within the next several years. I have been looking for it ever since!! That freshly scented sparkling 16-year-old I was back then did not, however, have any idea how much she had and how lucky she was. But I will say, now age 52 & doing my best to fully reclaim the fit refreshing person I once was but in a wayy wiser variety, I am thrilled that fragrance is on its way to me - at long last❤❤❤
Very much enjoyed your philosophical musings on nostalgia. About eau de Guerlain, I obtained a bottle of the now cologne bout 3 years ago. Alas, its lasting power is now non existent (less than even eau sauvage!). 10 minutes at best when as an EDT in the past lasted 12 hours or more. & lastly absolutely none of the new extracts for me. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be (Simone Signorat’s autobiography title!)
guerlains with a 4 digit batch code beginning with a 3 are indeed 2013, you are correct. there isnt a lot of content on this fragrance, i enjoyed your introspective take!

I've been enjoying these casual long form thought streams. I'm learning quite a bit. ✌🏻🙏🏻
Thank you! Glad you like them

That was such a wonderful read, thank you for sharing! Going out soon and will definitely wear Eau de Guerlain now
I believe EVEN IN 1987 it was an EAU DE COLOGNE!!❤❤❤
Oh for sure, but at some point it became an EDT, but i don’t know when!

Thank you! Sad to hear about your Eau de Guerlain not performing. The part about Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be had me cackling! 😂😂
