Hello Peter, the very expensive bonsai pots have always stopped me from starting bonsai. But then I just started improvising and recycling. Now I enjoy my trees in their funny pots. Thank you so much for your encouragement.
Been doing the same for most of my life. I have even made pots from old car parts. Brake drums work great for bonsai pots! I've also used hub caps and oil pan. Box fan housing. Many things will work when you just need a container.
I completely agree with You, Mr.Chan. I use many recycled container, for my little trees. Thank You for always sharing Your precious experience. Happy new Year!!! Eli from Italy
Thank you for all your great videos. I watch you a lot of the time, but don't get round to commenting very often. I wish you a very happy New year, best wishes from Australia.
I'm in SW US - when traveling I purchase water in plastic bottles. They come home to become mini-hot houses and propagation planters especially for my houseplants. I do not put holes in the bottom because they are clear, I can see when the soil dries out and they need water. These are not permanent 'homes' just until I see the roots and then pot up to a proper pot. I have several trees started in these also - maple, elm, red bud and mimosa. This is my favorite hobby and I spend almost nothing on it. Thank you Peter!
i go to thrift and re-stores for bowls to drill holes in the bottoms. it makes great pots for .50 cents to 1.00$. i got a cheap amazon diamond drill hole bit set. also i use the terracotta under trays they sell at garden centers. a little paint and they are perfect. thanks for all the years of teaching us peter! happy newyears !
I currently have ceder seedlings growing in Flora margarine pot, Japanese black pine growing in last years Christmas pudding pot and a dawn redwood group growing in carton that used to have chicken thighs in it! And so it goes on. You never have enough pots when you need them.
All my bonsai stuff is from what I randomly find like this. But this is why we like your channel so much, because even though this is your livelihood, you give us these hints as to how to save money.
I do the same, at the time I didn't have the money for proper pots but later realized I didn't need too. I saved a bunch of these containers I would get that had kiwis in them. They are already rectangular bonsai shaped and it looks great!
I couldn't agree more, mr Chan. I asked a nearby nursery for cutting pots: they gave me a lot of them for free... Perhaps an idea for other enthusiasts? Perhaps another tip: the wire to be used for anchoring bonsaï, doesn't have to be (expensive) alu wire at all! I use simple and cheap (coated) garden wire... I wish you all the best for 2025, mr Chan, and hopefully for many years to come. Of course that includes your family and Herons team!
Like you, I like my jam and can't bring myself to discard glass jars. Not only good for liquids, but for rooting plant cuttings in water. I try to avoid too much waste, but find takeaway cartons good for sprouting seeds. This winter I have one planted with maple seeds and snuggled against my house. It's mid-night here . . . thanks to your video and a cup of chocolate, I'll now resume my sleep.
Mr. Chen i use your same method since last year, i started to grow little trees and i recycle everything, bottles, yougurt's cups, salad boxes, everything😂😂😂 i'm please to see i professional like you do the same❤
Hi Peter I as you,use any containers I can for all the cuttings and any seeds I grow, the large milk containers I use as mini greenhouses for more small delicate trees that need a bit of extra protection I cut them in half at an angle put the tree in the bottom half and use the top with the handle as the cover which I can take off to check them for watering etc, they work very well. As for thick hardwood cuttings the only type I have managed to succeed with are Lonicera and Hungarian Lilac which root very easily. All the best for 2025.
Hi Peter I was born very poor. We too learn to save things and think of what can we do with found object that can useful. For instant I use the take out containers drill some hole and use them to replant my orchid collection it work! Take care and have happy New Year.🎉🥳🥂🍾😊
Ever thought about an autobiography Peter?! I never knew you grew up in India. I’d be fascinated to hear more about your life and your journey into bonsai. I’d be interested in your career, pottery, travels and philosophies… Mind you, you always seem busy enough already!
I rarely use plastic as bonsai containers, simply because I rarely buy anything in plastic. But I do scour op shops and find some beautiful ceramic or pottery bowls of various sizes. My husband drills holes in the bottom and then glues a couple of small ceramic tiles on the bottom for "feet". I'm probably your age Peter and I've never liked the idea of single use plastic. Unfortunately, it's impossible to escape plastic completely, but I do my best to avoid it.
It seems that with the idea of hardwood cuttings, you overcame a bit your urge of making air layerings instead of just pruning trees and throwing away the cut-offs. I hope the cuttings work out very well.
In one of the first videos I saw of you at the time, you straightened the wire and used it again. It was immediately clear to me "I like this man"! 👍🏻

As long as you enjoy them - that's all that matters.

I like to recycle containers into containers for cutting, seed starters, bonsai pots. Superb idea Mr. Chan.

Can't wait to see how these turn out!

Great to see you taking care of mother earth! Thanks Peter!
Good morning Peter. I so appreciate your videos with my Sunday tea. Thank you. Stay well and remain positive.

This is a great idea that you brought out to help save the planet.

The plastic cups, I use a ice pick, heated by a candle and when hot, the pick goes right through making a nice hole or holes on the bottom.
Thanks Peter.

Gracias por sus concejos muy interesantes
Thx for sharing Peter
I like being cheap when it comes to reusing garbage. I paint some and sell the plants for a bit more.
