    Loved this. A great interview and time spent with Peter, for whom I have a great deal of respect and affection.
    I have had the pleasure to meet him twice and found him welcoming and most gracious. It must be incredible to be able to step out and have that courtyard of bonsai trees and the land immediately on the doorstep.
    Xavier having a fan-boy moment at around 8:28 😂😊

    It's thanks to Peter that I started bonsai.
    In France, bonsai influencers say "you can't grow indoor it's not gonna work because trees grow outside" ; "you can't do this, you can't do that" and because of these words I was about to abandon this art. Two years later I'm proud to say that I've proven they were wrong and Peter was right!
    Even though I haven't produced "art" yet, it's growing and maybe one day I'll be able to say "this is my art, this is what I've been trying to achieve all these years".
    Huge respect to Peter even though there are people out there shitting on him for his methods (which I'm not always ok with but I still pay respect to him) and don't let people restrict you from doing what you want with your trees, pay attention to their advices but don't let them force you to do anything.

    What an amazing conversation you two had with Peter, My late wife and I were lucky enough to have a chat with him in the early days of Herons, around the late 70s early 80s can’t be absolutely sure of the date, Herons then was no we’re near the Herons you see today, there was only Peter his wife and a part time helper I seem to remember, the tree selection was very limited, my wife and Peter had things in common one being HongKong as she was born there,( in a Japanese prisoner of war camp with her family). Peter was talking to you about the early days in clubs etc, he was right about the attitude in these clubs a lot of in fighting and snobbery, my wife and I joined a couple of clubs in the midlands but we were never welcomed into either of them so we went our own way, in those days of course there was very little help available to learn bonsai methods, only books at a high price were on offer, my first two books were Peters, Master class and creating your own bonsai with everyday garden plants, which was an eye opener to me. Glad you guys had a great time travelling around parts of the U.K. ps I loved your get together with Xav you were a class act the pair of you. Joe.

    I like Peter a lot and I have been binge watching his videos for the past few months. Watching from newest back. I've got to about 3 years ago. He's right about some of the people who are stuck up and are dismissive of people using different techniques and what's is 'correct'. I get that he can be a bit brutal but I find those videos entertaining. We don't have to do everything he says in the videos, just take what we find helpful from them. If it weren't for Peter a lot of us (including me) Wouldn't even try bonsai, thinking it is for the rich who buy these expensive magnificent trees. The fun is making the tree and there is far more satisfaction styling one from scratch.

    If a bonsai professional with many more years of experience than I advises me on how to grow my trees, I think the wisest thing to do would be to listen to him and not do whatever I want under the pretext that everyone should enjoy bonsai as they want or make them happy. Many times this advice from more experienced people is to avoid discouragement in our first steps in this hobby. Many people have abandoned bonsai because they cannot overcome dead trees or because they see that they are not doing the right thing with the cultivation of some species. I agree with Peter's approach but I also think that some people misinterpret him when he talks about enjoying bonsai regardless of what others tell you.

    Yes, quite a man this Peter Chan... And quite a life! I'm following him on his UA-cam channel for many years already. There was a documentary about him on BBC to. And I learned a lot from him and his approach of this beautiful hobby. Which is, by the way, quite a totally different story compared to a commercial nursery, we should not forget about that (I think).
    What do you think, Jelle? Do you see similarities between his approach and yours? I do think there are a few but that's only my opinion...

    • @GrowingBonsai
      @GrowingBonsai  3 місяці тому

      Dificult one! I think he and I both feel that there are more ways to do bonsai than people doing it. And even though a specific route might not be mine, it does not mean it is not a valid one. But his wisdom and knowledge seems to surpass many. UA-cam is a bad medium and often does nto reflect the true abilities of a person.

    • @MAMLeers
      @MAMLeers 3 місяці тому

      @@GrowingBonsai Interesting. UA-cam a bad medium? Maybe. But also a good medium that opens many possibilities for many, I think. As Peter Chan once said: "It's a blade with two sharp edges"...
      Anyway, I see kind of a main and rather important similarity between the two of you. You both, in fact, are trying to "de-mystify" the world of bonsaï and trying to create one. You both are trying to show that in fact anybody can do this or at least give it a shot, be it with a wide range of possible results. Which, by the way, is my goal too... It's really not all that difficult to a certain level.
      Keep up the good work, mr Jelle; you almost have 40 K abonnees! I do not think they all value UA-cam as a bad medium...😉 Neither will the almost 400 K abonnees from "Herons"... That's my guess. Personally I hope, that discovering and enjoying bonsaï will be a true blessing for anyone. I salute you because you are obviously helping and encouraging many, as Peter Chan does.

    I am soon to turn 80 so it may seem strange to my friends that I still search for interesting things to learn. I have watched your UA-cam videos for many years. My husband and I also have enjoyed bonsai displays at conservatories and public gardens. A few years ago our daughter was given a finely cut delicate and beautiful Japanese maple. The person who gave it said it would not grow for her and always looked like it was dying. It grew into a wonderful specimen and I desired to have one like it. I tried air layering a very small branch but since I had never done that before, I failed to scrape the surface deeply enough. Even so, eventually there were a few small roots. I cut it off and potted it and placed it in the ground for the winter. That was two years ago so next spring I may try to put it into a bonsai pot. This year, my daughter’s tree produced several sports of a different color and leaf cut. She disposed of those and I told her to save for me any others that presented. Shortly, a strong large branch grew and I air layered it. I was amazed how many roots it produced. I cut it off and potted it. I also dipped the trimmings in rooting hormone to see how many small trees I will get. Who knows if I will ever be able to produce an artful specimen but I have enjoyed watching God help me multiply his provision. Thank you for your inspiration. Sincerely, Diana Williams
