A decade ago I was complaining about how the Crows were drafting well but kept losing our better players to interstate clubs. Patrick Dangerfield, Phil Davis, Jake Lever, Jack Gunston and Charlie Cameron to name a few. Now our drafting is so poor that other teams don't want our players, you have to go back to the 2015 class to find an Adelaide drafted player that's still playing in the AFL but at a different team.
One thing that shone a light on the average drafting to me was Dawson becoming captain in his second year at the club. That's not a knock on JD, but rather on the rest of the club, that no one who was already there had the leadership credentials.
Adelaides recruting team is terrible. The only reason we got dawson and rankine because they were crows fans growing up and are from SA. Adelaide cant lure any other players from interstate no matter how much money we throw at them. Adelaide has had interest in every single free agent and off contract player, never amounts to anything. We are desperate, we don't even have a proper training ground and the style of footy we are playing right now isn't exactly appealing. The problem definitely is development, chayce jones was drafted as we needed a speedy midfielder, it was the right choice but we haven't made him any better. I feel bad for some of the youngsters on our list because I don't feel they will reach their full potential. Guys like rachele, pedlar, schoenberg, berry. need to play more midfield but nicksy only likes playing older players like laird. I used to rate keays but he wont be in our next premiership and he has terrible skills. Rowey spoke for all us fans, its so frustrating watching us play sometimes, and there is no accountability. Only now are some players who have been out of form for a while are being dropped, guys like smith and McHenry. However, at the end of this year I hope they cull the dead weights of the list and people in positions of power go.
Couldn't agree more about Keays sadly, has ticker but his decision making and skills are so frustrating. I think Jones and McHenry have always had untapped potential, what makes it frustrating though is their developments and how unclear their roles have actually been. Drafted as utility like players but they have been messed around with a bit in terms of consistent roles they've had. McHenry looked at his best as a high half forward, going up and linking play. For me his best performance ironically was as the Sub against the Pies at the MCG last year (2023). Chayce Jones was a solid back pocket, but him on the wing is his best position I feel. Got to just keep them there and stop putting them in other positions.
Ogilvie Reid Kelly and Ricciuto have a lot to answer for our drafting and list management. Nicks inability to play our draftees in the position hasn't helped their development.
So true it hurts. The annoying things is, you point this stuff out to the happy clappers at the club and they just pull the "at least they try /they're a good / funny bloke" etc. or they just point out the handful of good picks we've had go well to avoid facing the reality. The bad picks in '16 - '19 draft has set us back so much. Combine that with a rebuild where we don't really play the young kids anyways and just reply on our veterans who continuously prove the can't get it done. It's no surprise we're sitting whwre we are.
The list problems seems be more complex than just poor drafting, the list management appear to be drafting to what they perceive is raw getable talent rather than the players to fill the coaches future gameplan. Adelaide get a cruisy ride when it comes to accountability which has lead them to take patronage for granted (just look at their low efforts to recruit members compared to Port vying for the same people). Need to sort out the off ground staff first then they can fix the on ground list.
Crows game plan had one trick, contested footy (Betts and Walker in their prime covered up a lot of cracks). Laird, Keyes, Matt and Brad Crouch can all win the footy. Higher ups liked what they saw and drafted more of this type of players in Pedlar, Schoenberg, Berry etc. The game now revolves around creating turnovers and fast, accurate movement into the F50 and Crows have no answers, especially with injuries forcing retirement of Sloane and Seedsman. Soligo, Rachele and Nankervis now need exposure and game time which Nicks has been stubborn about. Now finals are out of reach hopefully we can persist with this new group and make another run at finals next year.
Going back to footy last year and seeing the crows again was quite funny. There were a lot of "Who tf is Tingus Pingus?!" moments for me, as a lot of the team were knew and I had no idea about. At the end of the year, I could list off a couple Port players off the top of my head: Jones, Jonas, Boak, Wines, Rozee, Butters (can't forget Butters). But then with Crom, I was like: uhh... wow, Tex Walker is still here? Wow. And Sloane? Damn. Dawson I guess (he's never stood out to me), Keays is a new one.. You see what I mean? And at the start of the year, I learnt about more Crows players, but not much else.
I've said all year I don't think it's time for Nicks to go, I think it's time for Ogilvie and the team to go. The Crows for the last decade have had too many same same players that just lack any flash or composure under pressure. We've been saved by the recent trades and other draft avenues, but as for pure draftees and especially first rounders, it's been bad. No point getting first round key position players if you ain't got a midfield to aid them. After all, the ball starts in the centre.
Nothing compared to North Melbourne. Over ten years of bad drafting. The three stooges responsible quit before they could be sacked and fully held responsible. The young talent we did have was thrown away so the coach could save face, and they still have no handle on the need to recruit key position players that they desperately need. North is proof that bad drafting/list management can kill a club.
Really feel for the crows. Have been a die hard Carlton supporter for years now and can really sympathise with the feeling of there being no light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. It’s frustrating as all hell as there is nothing that supporters can do except watch from the sidelines. Stick fat crows fans, the rewards will be worth it
Drafting is one thing but development , along with Port Adelaide’s , suffers under the SANFL system. This needs to change as too many 18, 19 yo players have little experience around them on field and they develop bad habits and lose confidence.
I can see Adelaide going hard for unwanted midfield talent from other clubs and trying to draft a game breaking mid. Probably could make good offers to will brodie who had a gun 2022 for freo, or fin macrae who deserves a game at the pies but cant get one. add those two to the mids of Dawson, soligo, rankine/rachele (counts as one player for mid time) they could turn things around
To be fair Adelaide did try to pick Nick Blakey over Jones damn academy picks 😂 he is legitimately our pick that we are missing the most with Seedman and Smith retired or form slump for the later.
I’m no Crows fan so can I comment on this video, but sounds more like a development issue especially with young people. It’s not like a Nth Melb retention issue.
So which first round draft pick by the crows was so bad, that AT THE TIME, all the major mainstream media drafting experts were shouting about it being a terrible draft pick and the player is no good? There isn't one, is there? So you're just talking rubbish.
What about loosing Tippet for nothing plus punishment along with Dangerfield , Cameron , Gunston , bock , Davis , Lever and getting nothing in return for compo Add to that failing in the draft with gulluci ,macasey, Ned , Jones , shoenburg , pedlar , cook ect ect ect….. Still finally the squad is shaping up with some young guns hopefully we will overcome the decades of failure
It's not only drafting it's an inability to have a presence on game day. I cannot recall Mathew Nicks ever getting complimented for making changes during a game that won the crows a game. He is possibly the worst performing coach on game day. I recall the days where the likes of Jack Oatey and Cahill, Kerley, Blight, would be hero coaches who would often make changes that saw their teams reverse trend on match day with changes but Nicks rarely makes changes. The swans slaughtered the Crows last night but Nicks made no effort to change the team dynamics and rarely does. Is that because he has no changes he can make, doesn't like to upset team balance or too scared to make changes in case they don't work and cant handle the fallout criticism. Time for change or the crows face another 20 years in the doldrums.
The last three years I've thought the List Manager has got to go. The fact that we have picked mostly duds and clubs around us have grabbed better players. We didn't even bother to try and lure Horne-Francis over here. He was from South Adelaide for goodness sake. Last time I checked that isn't anywhere near Port Adelaide. That would habe made sense had we traded for him before North gave him away to Port. But ifwe are going to draft players and they are preferably from SA at least get the ones who have become great players at other clubs rather than randos that suck or quit cause they have given up on Footy. I say change your List Manager and get yourselvea better scouts and recruiters.
Everyone has bad draftees. Geelong won a flag, drafted guys like Nakia Cockatoo in the first round! Richmond, where to start..... Collingwood, Nathan Freeman... Hawthorn, Grainger-Barras.... hasn't slowed them down!
If they tank this season they could play the likes of Curtin Ryan Edwards Shoenberg Berry and Dowling in the right position giving them needed experience since we have insisted on playing experience in the rebuild might aswell do something right after the swans game. Sid Draper is the clear first round selection for us just weather or not we package this year's 1st round with next years to get LDU from North. Personally would rather Draper and if he is selected trade the pick for pick 8-12 and get another late first round pick to pick up players like Herbert Hardgrave and Travaglia.
I believe you suffer from poor drafting for twice as long as the period of ineptitude. So if you draft poorly for a 5 year period, you will pay the price for a subsequent 10 years. That’s what happened to the Saints because of their poor drafting between 2011 and 2016.
Really feel for the crows. Have been a die hard Carlton supporter for years now and can really sympathise with the feeling of there being no light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. As a crows supporter, I want to say a big thanks for taking the time to make this video. Our recruiting is atrocious.

bernie vince as well
Tyson stengle
@@bruceevennett955 tyson stengle was drafted by richmond
Kurt Tippett
Nathan Bock
Sleeping on Worrell like crazy in this vid, he’s an absolute gun
for real
Michalanney too

Even that infamous pre season camp hurt alot too

Our recruiting has been abysmal. Nothing us fans can do though 😒
Izak Rankine, Jordan Dawson
@pman6549 our only 2 guns both from SA both wanted to come home that's the only reason because they're adelaide boys
they pick butters (2018 pick 12) instead of jones (2018 pick 8) they play finals last year and it changes their whole club
100% agree
Yes this is one that really hurt, but there are others...
I'm a massive Crows supporter and I got to be honest I did not predict the season to go the way it has
The list problems seems be more complex than just poor drafting, the list management appear to be drafting to what they perceive is raw getable talent rather than the players to fill the coaches future gameplan. This is such an accurate video. Well done. Absolutely hit the root cause of the issue

Glad you enjoyed it
As a Crow's supporter it hurst to watch this video as it is 100% spot on.

North miles ahead of Crows now. More access but bailed recents

Tex was All Australian last year, yeah maybe he was drafted in 2007

chances of Fin Mcrae leaving Melbourne are slim ngl
Jake Soligo is a gun and will be AA one day.
It happened to port a couple of years ago. Don't worry boys you'll be playing finals next year
To be fair Adelaide did try to pick Nick Blakey over Jones damn academy picks 😂 he is legitimately our pick that we are missing the most with Seedman and Smith retired or form slump for the later.
To be fair, Blakey would have gone to North as a father son if he wasn't an Academy pick.

Crows complaining about injuries as an excuse to losing to Richmond, who has had the worst injury list all season, is hilarious
Nah it definitely wasn’t injuries, we played like shit and Richmond had a hell of a lot more heart
So which first round draft pick by the crows was so bad, that AT THE TIME, all the major mainstream media drafting experts were shouting about it being a terrible draft pick and the player is no good? There isn't one, is there? So you're just talking rubbish.

Drafting in the 10’s was very questionable. Been solid since 2020 in my opinion.
Scouting, recruiting and development - shit!
Not one lie told in this entire video
“No club has drafted as badly as Adelaide since 2016.”
You literally made a video just recently about the bad drafting of the Roos.

Now do best recruiting clubs
Hawthorn, Sydney, Geelong and Collingwood
Everyone has bad draftees. Geelong won a flag, drafted guys like Nakia Cockatoo in the first round!
Richmond, where to start.....
Collingwood, Nathan Freeman...
Hawthorn, Grainger-Barras.... hasn't slowed them down!
Nah, that drafting has been terrible since the beginning.
mind if I print out this thumbnail and hang it on my wall?
Go for it😂
In 2025 they should look to tank for Dyson Sharp
If they tank this season they could play the likes of Curtin Ryan Edwards Shoenberg Berry and Dowling in the right position giving them needed experience since we have insisted on playing experience in the rebuild might aswell do something right after the swans game.

The good old Adelaide boys club. Jobs for mates, look pretty but can’t perform

can we get rid of mark ricciuto
Hahahahhahahahahahahha
