K L Saigal or Kundan Lal Saigal is a known legend in Indian Playback and semi classical history. Saigal was a born talent and he started singing at a very early age after being trained in Indian classical music. In his prolifique career K. L. Saigal has sang and acted in a number of hindi films. The most notable of them was Pramathesh Chandra Barua's adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Devdas. K L Saigal has delivered enormous number of hit songs for various films like Devdas, shahjehan, President, Bhakt Surdas and Tansen. His song " Jab dil hi toot gaya" from the film shahjehan directed by A.R. Kardar which released in 1946 is still held as one of the most passionate songs sung with ethos in the history of hindi film music.
Trivia : 1)In a career of fifteen years, Saigal acted in 36 feature films - 28 in Hindi, seven in Bengali, and one in Tamil.
2)In December 1941, Saigal moved to Mumbai to work with Ranjit Movietone. Here he acted and sang in a number of successful films. Bhukt Surdas (1942) and Tansen (1943) were hits during this period.

Thanks a lot.. Nostalgic a s my dad wanted to hear his songs in his ICU bed .. Which was played and he left us hearing his favorites.. We have a collection of his songs with a gramaphon at home
These old songs were used to enjoyed by old persons mostly,but this new generation kids dislike and making jokes over theme but don’t know that these are evergreen songs whereas most of new songs lasts only for 2 to 3 months only.

First time I heard about KL Saigal was in 1990s at my school in Jammu when I was around 10 from my a very old teacher who was Saigal as well and his cousin perhaps. He talked about him very proudly.

I agree with you but unfortunately his life cut short because of excessive drinking! He passed away in 1947 and in 2020 more than 74 yrs have passed since then.
No singer can take place of K.L.Saihgal . His way of singing was a different kind. Marvelous singing. Uncompairable.

I was born 102 years later when K L saigal was born. Sadly he is no more. He died in 1947. I have heard that he got addicted to alot alchohol. He died at 40. But still he is alive in everyone hearts.
