It was obvious when the first photos were released that was what happened. The footings were intact. No sign of stress or damage. This is what happens when you get the cheapest contractors you can find. Has happened throughout NZ infrastructure
Transpower need to apologise too - its their contractor. Its their contacting choice. Transpower are ultimately accountable for this.
Why isn’t the maintenance of Transpower transmission lines done by Transpowers own staff. When the New Zealand Electricity Dept maintained the nations transmission lines, maintenance of the lines was the responsibility of the New Zealand’s Electricity Dept own staff. It will always cost more if you contract line maintenance out to contractors, because a profit margin is always added to the final contract price. What experience has Transpowers Chief Executive, Alison Andrew got with transmission line maintenance, has she ever climbed a 220Kv transmission tower ?
She has an electric hair drier so knows a fair bit about it .
the guys doing the work must be dumber than a brick , even an ounce of common sense from one of the many workers would have prevented this . the other thing that needs scrutiny is the contractor model and how they are paid , is it paid per set task ? if so its far more prone to miss-haps
Yep if there is a set price for the job rather then say a hourly rate. Things do happen

Procedures are one thing. Hiring competent people is another
This is a top down issue not a bottom up
@@jean-pierrecarolissen2591 Fortunately person in charge of the business unit is responsible. Shit rolls back up hill. Who issued the permit to work? Lol
This is like standing on a tree branch and then cutting it off .. what a circus
A garage once didn't put all bolts back on my wheel! Took me 2 visits for them to have a look!
Who on earth certifies such a work team as this.? Do they not understand that high tension isn't only about electricity, towers are always under mechanical tension, this is a very embarrassing event. The crews I interacted with in 70s through to early 90s will be shaking their heads in disbelief, the documentation for the procedures have been in place for decades, its unbelievable. Regards Terry ex NZED & Contac.
1.5 million dollars a year she is paid for this nonsense.
CEO Teresa Gatting was paid millions!! This is nothing.
So this is why we are paying so more for Network Services Variable and Fixed Daily charges on our monthly power accounts than we do for the amount of electricity that we use, we are paying $1.5m for this CEO’s wages and numerous contractors profits. Time to re-nationalise the electrical industry.
@@bazza3643 Exactly. There is a lot of bludgers with their snouts in the trough and the gullible silent public just keep paying.
You can’t hold a CEO responsible for the actions of some workers not doing the most basic of jobs. Secure the nuts. It ain’t hard. The CEO could be paid $100k a year or $10m a year - that has nothing to do with a mistake some random employee down the line does. Too many people wanting someone to hang for the actions of someone else whom they have no control of on a task by task basis. The person that needs to be held accountable is the team of workers that didn’t secure the bolts. Why do they get protection.
These managers need to lose there positions incompetence
It's a flow on effect I've seen it start 15 or so years ago. Hiring SouthAfricans for Management rolls is risky for Health and safety but profitable for the businesses. They try bring that cut corners get and do it wigger attitude seen itany times.
yes mate seen it here in western australia too,so bad most have been moved on now.dangerous.
if this muppet takes full responsibility then he must be fired for incompetence
I'm a woman , who changes my own tyres on my car , I've been taught the logic of sequence loosing . And tightening , andcrefixing . ARENT THOSE BLOKES SUPPOSED TO KNOW THOSE BASICS , .? How could you all get it SO wrong , BEATS ME . ! ❤ SORT IT, I pay for better power delivery ,. My power bill tells me , I'm being charged for maintenance .
Do you know they were 'blokes'?
Excellent point made re we are charged for line maintenance..
Think you mean changing a wheel?
Can you bake a good cheese scone as well?I need you asap ❤🙂🇳🇿
Absolutely disgraceful!! The tower is falling like the country (NZ).
Farking nuts coconuts bro.🤨
It's simple: stop subcontracting specialist tasks to contractors. It's not routine anything to drop a tower, no matter how long you have been doing a job.
Mate undoing nuts is not a specialist job
Stunning lack of supervision and workers without an once of common sense. This beggars belief!
They were definitely not competent, how do I know that? The tower fell over.
Hire New Zealanders, first? Why tell people, that level.
Looks like not following procedure
But ..
Were they being pressured to an unrealistic time frame.. ?
Get All the emails and texts....
"We don't allow anyone who is incompetent to work on the network", really?
You can't legislate for stupidity!
😂
Sure looks like the definition of incompetence
OMG!I feel sorry for that guy. You Had One Job memes incoming...
the mayor of auckland could very well be right about that fallen pylon up north.. the ground bolts were removed..
first thing i noticed on the news looking at the base plates. stuck out like a sore thumb.
40 years ago this work was done by Kiwis , mainly Maori blokes , and they were good at it .
Lol they new how to drink tea in caravan and remove one nut and put back one nut, even they wer'nt dummies eh boy.🙄
There’s your problem right there !!!
This country is becoming an absolute joke, bloody hopeless!
It is difficult to understand why are you employing substandard people my daughter was electrocuted when they upgraded the power cables to our Street and somehow you avoided health and safety prosecution. I suggest that the powers at be, fall on the sword and pay compensation like you should, you charge cumulus amounts of money for your supply and I can see you getting out of paying compensation for this
It’s your job to train staff
Wouldn't ya hate to be these fellas at the moment? I bet they were dreading doing this, but that's why they get the big bucks. Imagine how the fella with the spanner is feeling at the moment.
Compensation for lost of business, having had to shut down for the day.
Contractor model for national grid is ridiculous. IF cheapest quote wins then their will always be shortcuts, improper procedures or supervisors lacking.
If they spent less time talking Maori and more time in having competent staff , this stuff up would not have occurred. Having women in charge would not have helped. All they do is make excuses. It not rocket science to know that if you remove nuts from the bolts the tower is going to fall over.
Speaking a language that originated on this land made the tower fall. Beautiful logic.
Both racist and sexist, eh, Brian?
Who were the workers on the ground? It's obvious standard procedure wasn't followed. This is utter disgrace even a 3rd world country would be embarrassed
I'm aghast. How on earth the workers thought it was a good idea 2 take ALL the nuts off even one leg beats me. Doesn't common sense tell you 2 leave half of the nuts on ??? This Frikn takes the cake. Maybe all the protocols and procedural training are the problem, people don't think for themselves anymore.
A 10 yr old would have more common sense than those trained idiots .. what were the work crew smoking .. crack I’m guessing
That'll be the third world workers brought in to the country to do the job I'd imagine.
New Zealand is a third world country my friend
@@davidthomson692 certainly explains all the third world workers
They both need to resign today
Why, because you always have to make someone pay regardless of logic and why it happened!?
You have to have someone in charge in the working Crew if your supervisor is not on site then he has to nominate someone to take charge and sign the work off at the end of the shift these procedures were not followed thus human error which could have been prevented😢😢😢😢😢
Look at these two guilty all over there faces there needs to be govt investigation there pocketing all the money for there share holders not spending monkey on training
Why is this company still operating?
A good CEO is responsible and accountable for everything the company does. Alison Andrew threw her maintenance partner under the bus.
that’s how every woman ceo acts when the shit hits the fan.
even during a press conference she’s trying to take control like nothing happened
Its why you sub contract everything so you have some one to throw under the bus when the shit hits the fan, cant put your million dollar package at risk
@@craigmooney3744don’t see how her being a woman has anything to do with that. That behaviour could be anybody’s in a situation like this.
3rd world since I left
And the two of you are resigning when ?.edit to say...Alison please pull your head in..If you handover to let others speak.Let them speak.I understand your impossible
Eskom, is that you?
So much bs it’s easy talk to the workers they will tell what happened
The workers can't speak English .
Remove one nut at a time so only one nut is ever missing and there should be new reconditioned nuts to replace older ones immediately eg bring a set with you not remove and recondition on site.
I knew it was a base plate problem. How, I just looked at the footage.
I'm glad I left the HV national grid contracted out network way back in 1996 after 13 years. I suspect there's now much more top heavy "management companies" all involved now, somehow all into clipping the retail power ticket on the way through, while the real tower and line crews, technicians and engineers do more with less every year. I don't think I'd like to see the makeup of the industry now. - Who undoes the nuts on all 3 tower legs, all at once!?
Idiots.
15:55 - 16:11 All we needed to know, ta.
When productivity gains go wrong.
l finded it hard to believe that three sets of bolts will lift off . May be one set ? It is easy to point the finger at the workers .One would think that they would have checked the feet before they had gone home . If it is the works just remember that we have all made mistakes, may it be bid or small .
Diversity hires.
Geeez! What a horrible old battle axe that old trout is, wouldnt want to meet her in a dark ally .
No failure you just didn’t put nuts on it’s easy
Arh balls, at least they owned up with a week or so, not months
My Grandson with his Lego set understands this. With any standing structure the tower must be attached to the foundation by two sets of bolts. The fool who believed otherwise should have been instantly fired. Drivel such ass this when added to the grounding of the ferry in the Straits on the weekend proves we are led by muppets.
Both need to loss there jobs
oooppss ,, now that the event is nearly rectified, we can have a laugh.. eh NZ .... Listen to us... in front of the world, what a nightmare.... still hard to laugh. Why are we idiots????
Haha, what a balls up.
This is a phil twyford level for sure!!
Mmmm, trouble is Twyford has no balls !
@@Millektm Nuts are required in this situation .
They also need to explain the reason for such ill-fated maintenance. Were they checking for corrosion or what?
Look at these two taking absolutely no responsibility
The people loosing food in their fridges and freezers. Many probably not having insurance to claim it back! You better put some of the profit back to those people who have suffered losses.
It sounds like a kets do them all and not follow procedure of 1 corner at the time!
It’s rumour and speculation until the company comes out and confirms the exact same thing, just blames someone else for it.
She’s a politician
Were they drug tested?
I agree , I've watched a road gang , having lunch break , pull up on the beach front at Taipa , pas the joints round , drive back , and hop in the rollers etc , WHAT THE HENG !?
Pass ❤
Liquid lunch ?
Well these journalists got owned and thats it dude!😎
Oh dear!
Looks like she has no confidence in him and he's got none in himself?
Your know - I just love that the CEO is female. Progress. 😊
True
Muldoon was so wrong. When I left the IQ of NZ dropped by 50%
Watching these clowns would make a great Monty Python skit, what an absolute joke.
Take I mate
Pointing the finger high business Co op sweeping the blame to there!! Employee's why wasn't a top.. sup.. there to over sea the job done safely
Because he was overseas.
We humans make mistakes, as much as we try not to.
This is a world first .
Which is why fines, penalties and other punishments exist.
What a highly polished 💩
No training looks like your heads on the block your boss is going to have your head
Why do we need a tin of cocoa with that
And a car tyre bud.Sad state of affairs.
thats ok luxon will fire the board and fill the places with his cronys
Looking forward to some competent staff then.
Sabotage, this is too stupid for anything else and the ship.
It might be russian sympathizes
Hey who done it hey who stole my the nuts 🥜🥜😂😂😂
Sold them for scrap metal .
Late stage capitalism things
Boots where removed on the tower
Blaming the workers! What an insult fire these two for negligence of training immediately
Lose your job yet
Bolts where not installed
? trustpower by nz who pm dpmc wooh hold on tight.
You obviously don’t at hut workers enough
Looks to me who ever has done this wonts to live in a cave again 😮
