    This video was a life saver! Auto mechanics were trying to charge me $100 for diagnostics only even though I told exactly what’s the issue. Then they were charging $81 to replace the spark plugs!! You saved me 100’s of dollars and time.

    I just contacted (May '21) three different Hyundai dealerships' parts managers who all insisted that Hyundai has definitely NOT changed the spark plug recommendation for the 2013s, the NGK SILZKR6D8E is still the one to use. Also, my 2013 Turbo Veloster has NEVER been a "lemon" in any way. I bought it new in Oct. 2012 and have never had any issues, it's been a great car!

    • @Chayness
      @Chayness  3 роки тому

      We both heard different things but what I can say is that NGK's website still recommends the part number you described for models manufactured up until 02/28/2014. You can verify this by searching up both a 2013 and 2014 model on NGK's website. Dealerships in my area all went with the newer model plug (the one in this video) for 1st Gen Veloster Turbos in General. You're not wrong and i'd say go with what you're comfortable with. Thanks for the info for other 2013 owners though.

    I was getting ready to buy the NGK plugs, as you suggested, but they don't have the 93655 at all. Now the one they have listed as actual OE is 93815. However, the heat range is 6 and comes pre-gapped at 0.40 inches. Must be a slightly updated version perhaps? 🤔

    • @Chayness
      @Chayness  3 роки тому +2

      What year did you look up? Be careful because I looked up the part again and the number you provided specifically says for "Naturally Aspirated" Vehicles so be careful. If you have a turbo, the part number I listed is still correct unless the dealership changed them once more? But the 93815 is for NON TURBO models only.

    Super big fan of your channel bro and your build progress.
    Couple questions in regards to your Veloster since you’re 4 years in.
    I have a catless test pipe on the way, running a catback exhaust system currently.
    Also have a cold air intake and Intercooler resonator delete on the way as well.
    Plan on running a JB4 after installing full bolt ons and I was told I need upgraded HKS Cold plugs gapped at 0.026”.
    Do you know anything about JB4, or tuning in regards to Veloster Turbo’s?

    • @Chayness
      @Chayness  3 роки тому

      I personally wouldn't recommend the JB4 and instead would go with a full tune. It is pricier but I've heard plenty horror stories from people using the JB4. That being said, running a tune or the JB4 you will for sure need the HKS Spark Plugs but there are other things as well that you should consider like an upgraded fuel line. Lastly if you do go with a full tune, they can get pricey if you plan on buying a spare ECU but they range from like $600-$1000+ depending on what company you go with. Still if you rather not spend money on a blown engine, the price difference from JB4 to a full tune is highly worth it.

    I did some research and called a bunch of Hyundai dealers and they all told me that NGK 91568 is the OE factory recommended part. But it has a heat range of 6 and you convinced me that the higher heat range is better especially since I have a 2013 turbo model. so I’m kinda confused which to choose, or why I got such different information when I called Hyundai dealers

    • @Chayness
      @Chayness  4 роки тому +2

      So from what I was told, that is the OLD part number. It was replaced with the one I mentioned when all the 2013 problems started happening. Every dealer I called in SoCal (I called 3 for full transparency) gave me the part number I showed here. Keep in mind they gave me a STOCK number first and when I asked and pressed further for an actual NGK number, this is the number I ended up with. This thread even talks about how Heat Range 6 is outdated and lists a part number but that number seems to be discontinued. If you go to NGK's site look up a 2015 (if you look up higher year models, they show only plugs for N/A and not turbo engines) you'll see the part number I mentioned as their recommended OE plug and I happened to get the same number from the 3 dealers I called. www.velosterturbo.org/threads/spark-plugs.21425/

    NGK spark plug heat ranges use a lower number for a hotter spark plug. Heat range 6 is hotter than heat range 7. The hotter heat range 6 plug was causing issues because it ran too hot and could produce engine damaging pre-ignition. Hyundai then went to a colder heat range 7 plug later on. Hyundai currently uses a heat range 8 spark plug in these motors. I use NGK1422 plugs, heat range 8 in my 2016 KIA 1.6L Turbo motor and it runs perfectly, in fact better then the stock heat range 7 plugs that came in the motor.

    • @Chayness
      @Chayness  4 роки тому

      I haven't had any issues with my choice. Again, I went on forums and people had "hit or miss" issues with the 1422's. I went this route after checking with the dealer and NGK. Again, I'll probably switch up the plugs once i'm a bit more modified but for now, I don't want to risk it.

    At 4 k rpm it bogs and jultz. No matter what gear. Done in sport or auto. 2013 coils are good. Just got some ngk ordered. And got some gdi cleaner. Did I do the right first diagnosis? Only like 60 bucks. Still waiting on parts. Hopefully it works.

    • @Chayness
      @Chayness  3 роки тому +1

      That's really odd. I honestly would have said the coils or plugs but if those are fine, there must be something else causing the problem. This is a stretch but do you have a stock intake? If so, there's a little "door" in the shape of an oval under the air filter (inside the air box). Make sure that thing isn't clogged up or that it opens and closes easily. It's a horrible design but it's meant to be closed for "fuel economy" under light load and will open up under heavier load (ie, higher rpm) to allow more air flow, but if that door is acting up, MAYBE it may be causing some part of the issue you're experiencing. Also, unplug the battery for like 5 minutes after any new install including the plugs to allow the ECU to reset and sort of "adjust" to the newer plugs to see if that helps.

      As someone who once worked at Auto Zone (lol), they often give you plugs that "should" work but dont. When it comes to plugs, its always best to stick to OE and not another brand. As for plugs, I go over the OE part number in this video. I'd recommend those if you're not heavily modified. The OE brand is NGK so make sure thats what you got. Thanks for the vid. Also you should think about looking into some back lighting for when your talking just to pretty up the quality a bit you don't need another fancy either.

    don't use that gap tool on iridium plugs it will damage or destroy the Iridium center electrode or porcelain center use needle nose pliers or spark plug gapping tool to bend the ground strap up to the desired height. DO NOT LET THE PLIERS OR GAPPING TOOL TOUCH THE IRIDIUM CENTER ELECTRODE OR PORCELAIN

      That's good advice. I used to check gap but I should have mentioned not to adjust gap with it. I'll pin this.

      Per NGK's website: "While most NGK spark plugs are pre-gapped, there are occasions when the gap requires adjustment. Care must be taken to avoid bending or breaking off the fine-wire electrodes. NGK recommends a round wire-style or pin gauge gap tool to measure the gap. If the gap must be adjusted, use a tool that only moves the ground electrode and does not pry between or against the electrodes. NGK also recommends adjusting the gap no more than +/- 0.008” from the factory preset gap."

      If you're doing full time racing, i'd probably agree but the plugs have a heat range of 9 and racing plugs typically don't have the longevity of normal plugs for daily driving. That and their higher price point just isn't practical. That higher heat range without the extra mods might even have a negative effect on ignition timing.

    I've been running ruthenium in a 2012 hyundai veloster 1.6 natural aspirated with injen cold air intake and hydro sock( Washington) also k2 engineering cat back system with cat delete and manifold delete for 20000 miles so far nothing weird yet

      Ruthenium on an N/A shouldn't be an issue. If you check the NGK site, they do have a Ruthenium part number but it's only for the NAV models. The Turbo models are still Laser Iridium only.
