Why are the instruments so square? I presume they are traditionally accurate, and as a craftsman I get curious about (to me) new stuff. Does it have to do with the nomadic nature of the mongols, or are there any other, simple or complex, resons why this have evolved the way it has?
+ogionite The instruments are actually not traditionally accurate, but are modern versions heavily influenced by Western string instruments. Traditionally the front of the sound box would be a stretched goat or sheep skin and there would be a single sound hole in the back. The all-wood sound boxes with Western-style f-holes were introduced in the 20th century. Similarly, most modern players use Western cello or bass bows.

I should also note: the traditional bow was very similar in design to the European Baroque bow.
