Dave Barker has to be one of the most under rated singers to come out of Jamaica. Fantastic singer, here doing his DJ bit. Wicked. Also, note a young Sly Dunbar of Sly and Robbie fame, on the drums.
That bass line still rattles windows to this day. I love it, neighbors hate it....bring it all back! Pure classic, grew up on this stuff in Camberwell, London!
I have been trying to find this song on UA-cam a long time. Couldn't remember the name but finally tracked it down. This was on WLS Chicago a lot when I was dating my future wife in the spring of '71. Was driving down the highway listening to it and weaving a bit from the tune. State trooper pulled me over but let me go.
Have been back to this so many times in the last month since hearing it for the first time in years, cant get enough of it.It's a fantastic bit of music.
Great song remember this when I was very young. My aunt Jean was into all this music.God bless you Auntie Jean for getting to hear and love a wide range of music ,and I will always be grateful to you.. Love you xxxxx
Used to dance in my cot to this one never knew it got to number one in the UK, doubt if a reggae song will ever get to number one again in Britain like they used to.
Oh yeah definatley a taste of the 70s,and I had forgotten about this brilliant song until I watched East to East and this was playing in the nightclub.Wonderful memories.
Saw Tony Hadley playing this on The One Show last night, still sounds as great as ever, it should be re-released ASAP -great memories of my first love too ! Donna
@TxTFamGuy1 I had this single - they are not really lip-syncing because the lead singer is live - I can tell because there is way less echo than the single and some of the phrasing and wording is different than the single. I think you're right about the other musicians - they are moving along to the track but aren't live - they did this a lot on top 30/40 TV shows in the 60's and early 70"s... A backing track without vocals - the fore-runner to karaoke it would seem...
Weird how there is another drum track overdubbed over the original here. He's doing live vocals over the original instrumental track - plus those extra drums.
@EvenThisNameTaken I don't think they would record "special versions" of their songs at all, as that would be too expensive to do for the sake of one TV show appearance. This particular track is the exact same instrumental track as the single without the vocals. They would make a mix from the original master tapes without the lead vocals to sing along with live on the TV show.
"as that would be too expensive to do for the sake of one TV show appearance" - not if they were using BBC facilities. It has been stated on BBC Four shows that this was how it worked for the bulk of TOTP's lifetime.
@mthai66 considering it has the Offbeat rhythm there really isn't much that divides Ska, Rocksteady, and Skinhead Reggae. Some may say it is a faster or slower pace but I find these labels get used interchangeably so much to describe the same music. If a song similar to this came out in 1965 it would be labeled as "Ska".
@mthai66 Don't take my word for it. Listen to some very early slower versions of MIllie Small, Monty Morris, Chuck & Darby, etc... All this music came out in the early 60's and was/is labeled SKA. Of course there is a difference between these 3 music genres but so much of it (case in point "Double Barrel") blurred over in between each other and I believe the label that has been slapped on some of these tunes has more to do with the year it was released than the actual musical content.
The backing track is the original minus vocals straight from Jamaica the musicians are miming except for Dave. This was the first recording of Sly Dunbar on drums (Sly & Robbie) in Jamaica - not drumming in video. This is definitely not ska!!
@MattCarlDesign This is the most ignorant thing I've heard all day. Just because all three beats are related does not make the styles of music the same. Soul, Funk and Disco share a similar relationship, and are quite distinct. Just because you have trouble distinguishing apples from oranges does not mean they are the same thing. Some of us are "grocers" by trade, and comments like yours sound ignorant and ridiculous. Ska is Ska, Rocksteady is Rocksteady and Reggae is Reggae.

I'll never forget this song. It was popular when I graduated from high school back in 1971.
I left high school in 1971.!!!
That bass line still rattles windows to this day. I love it, neighbors hate it....bring it all back! Pure classic, grew up on this stuff in Camberwell, London!
What a great bass line
This record was years ahead of its time. Within 10 years there would be a whole genre that would be a nod to the energy and framing of this record.
one drop classic...no other tune bring yard style music fi england as much as dis yah one..
2 weeks #1 from 1st of May 1971 after T. Rex ("Hot Love") and before Dawn ("Knock Three Times") ;-)

Saw Dave Barker still performing this song and others at Coast to Coast North London last Saturday - Awesome.
This brings back memories of a wedding in London. OMG ! What fond memories of my youth as a British/American child, the best of both worlds.

I discovered this song about 10 years ago on a 70's compilation album - it is one of my all time favourites from the early 70's!

Old Skinhead favorite.
You could say that what he is doing is proto rap.
How can you sit still?
"Do the SKINHEAD Moonstomp!!!!"

Can anybody out there please tell me if this is available on DVD? I've gotta have it.
What year would this have been?
damn they would only let him sing and not even let the band actually play haha
Check out ......Stephenie McKay .....Take me over. If you like these guys you will like that.
Is that Jackie Mittoo on keyboard?
At 1:25 the drummer forgets to do the drum roll while miming and tries to fill in fast.
Was this part 1?
No it's Ansil Collins
@Elysiandreams87 LOL this is Skinhead Reggay
The backing track is the original minus vocals straight from Jamaica the musicians are miming except for Dave. This was the first recording of Sly Dunbar on drums (Sly & Robbie) in Jamaica - not drumming in video. This is definitely not ska!!
Too much - eyaah
???? I see only one keyboard player on stage but I can clearly hear both a piano and an organ. I call shenanigans, they are lip syncing this song!
