I replaced the windows in my dodger using this method and it works very well. I did, however, change one detail. I measured the new window and cut it out. I ripped the outside seam from the old window and trimmed the outside edge of the old window just to the edge of the inner seam. Then I basted the new window over the old and sewed the outside seam along the original outside seam line. I flipped the assembly over and ripped the original inside seam out and pulled the old window out of its place leaving the assembly with the new window secured by the new outside seam. Then I stitched the inner seam on the assembly along the original inside seam line. The new window is secured in place and everything is neat and tidy.
HI John. I had the same idea. I didn't want to sew through 2 layers of windows, yes, replacing for 3rd time. I'm new to this so this is my first project. If all goes well I am going to sew a whole new dodger from scratch. Did you have problems with stitches missing? What needle and thread did you use? Hope you get this. Great minds think alike. HA

I just successfully replaced the isinglass panel in my starboard side curtain and also removed and reinstalled the old "U" zipper using your methods taught in that particular video. I used my Singer Heavy Duty standard styled machine. Boy do I wish I had a commercial machine and a larger working area. It came out pretty good but the stitch length is a little tighter than I would have liked, but I did the best with what I had.

about 6 years ago I did something similar but used contact cement around the perimeter where the stitches are (both the new window side and the olde window side. It is tricky but holds really well. I cut out the old window the same way.
Yes, HH-66 Vinyl Cement will work to glue sections of clear vinyl together. However, it will not work with O'Sea and Strataglass since they have a protective coating not allowing the glue to penetrate and stick.

What factors should I use to determine if I use 30 gauge or 40 gauge? I am replacing the glass in a fairly large dodger.

What size of needle and thread did you use? I am going through 2 layers of window plus the canvas and trim. Sews fine when I layer up material but when testing on window material it skipped stitches. I used a 21 needle and 92 thread. I was told to use a 18 needle but I don't think she knew I was going through so many layers. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Hi Sheri, I'm no pro by any stretch so take everything I say with a grain of salt...
did you try adjusting the tension? I find the machine pretty much powers through anything... But I believe skipped stitches are more a sign of tension issues. I used the "regular" thread (poly I believe) but if you're using that tenara or one of the Teflon PTFE type it's apparently a little more tricky. I'm pretty sure there's a video on the Sailrite channel covering it... But I would definite get some scrap pieces of the same materials you're going to be seeing through and play with the tension knob...

When using a V-92 Polyester thread you can use a size #20 needle, a #21 may also work, but it is a little on the big size. If you are still getting skipped stitches in your window material and canvas assembly you may need to check the timing of the sewing machine. Are you using a Sailrite Ultrafeed sewing machine? If so, I will include some videos that may be helpful. Let me know.

I have today used this method, but I have a problem. I have sewed in 30 gauge Strattaglass. The method worked beautiful. However the old window material must be 40 guage. My seam ripper will not cut it. Neither will my scissors. Can anyone tell me how to get the old heavy vinyl out.
Old clear vinyl material over time starts to loose the liquid, called plasticizer, once it is gone you are left with a board like clear vinyl that starts to become cloudy or tan in color. The plasticizer in the clear vinyl helps to keep the vinyl glass supple and soft which makes it easier to cut. If all of it is gone then it is a pain to cut and only a good heavy duty pair of scissors will cut it.
I had friend bring me his side window panels with the old plastic cut out,,, I said oh my god what did you do, he said he was trying to help if he hadn’t been a friend I would have turned this job away Don’t help friend
