The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School is where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. When hotshot fighter pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise) is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots, especially the cool and collected Iceman (Val Kilmer). But Maverick isn't only competing to be the top fighter pilot, he's also fighting for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).

The best part of the movie is that This movie was actually made in full participation with the US Navy, everything you see from the deck scenes to the flight scenes were real, with US Navy pilots with cameras on and in their planes. RIP Tony Scott the director, he was truly a film making legend

Top Gun 1 is such an iconic movie and so many people of the 80s and the 90s have such vivid memories of it. One of Tom Cruise’s most iconic roles as Maverick. For that time I loved how they shot the film and did all of the plane sequences. It was sad to see Goose die as it was painful as he was his best friend. Tom Cruise doing best which is risking his life in doing crazy stunts to entertain us all as he’s still doing it till this day, it’s truly admirable. Loved your reaction/analysis. Looking forward to your reaction to Top Gun: Maverick.

In my younger days, I was a Cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During our 1st summer of training, one 4th Class cadet (a freshman like me), and one U.S. Air Force Pilot had passed in a training accident. During a simple orientation flight, the pilot oxygen had failed. Ignoring orders to eject, the cadet tried to turn the plan toward the airport and it crashed into the side of a mountain. We were first all 'Yelled Out' about how orders have to be followed without hesitation, then they told us that 2.5% of the training flights result in an accident, with about half of those leading to a fatality within the crew or on the ground.

I was 15 when the movie came out and watched it with a friend. When it ended, we both jumped up and would have joined if we had been old enough. Three years later when the Navy recruiter showed up at our school I told him I wanted to fly jets like Maverick but because I didn’t have 20/20 vision he told me I couldn’t be a pilot but I could be a navigator (Goose). I went to college instead. Turned out my ASVAB score was high for radar tech on the Trident nuclear subs, when The Hunt for red October came out during my freshman year of college, I thought, man I could’ve been doing that! 😂

Goose is the most realistic Navy callsign in the movie. The Air Force gives out "Mavericks" and "Iceman". Edit: real callsigns and real scenarios of friends.

    1. An old shipmate of mine was onboard the Enterprise when they filmed this.
    2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash. Everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong.
    3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. Six on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men, women and the men and women working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out🤩🤩🤩🤩
    4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT
    5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong.
    6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone"
    7. The officer(Goose) is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation.
    8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space.
    9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano" She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT
    10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood (not the pilot). There is AC onboard.
    11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV.
    12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT.
    13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seems like they were practicing. Better yet, it has a plot. (besides Navy recruitment).

In Top Gun Maverick, the in cockpit scenes are real. The actors were in the back seats of Navy F/A-18F's. The HD camera was mounted on the dashboard facing them. And Navy fighter pilots were in the front seat fliying the planes. The actors had to go through training to learn how to withstand the G forces. So all the wild manuevering you see from inside the cockpits is real. The video shot couldn't be reviewed until the planes landed. So if the shot was wrong the director couldn't simply call "cut" and start over. The actors and their Navy pilots would have to go up and do the in cockpit scene again. Also, this is the first movie to ever show an actor (Tom Cruise) actually being launched from an aircraft carrier. Again, Cruise was actually sitting in the back seat. A real Navy fighter pilot was up front at the controls. The hype behind Top Gun Maverick is more than well deserved.

After a bit a bunch came over and started to sing You've lost that living feeling bit, it was a bit embarrassing but funny as well. I ended meeting a bunch of them and hit it off with one guy in particular and we hung out together for the whole summer while they were here. Kind of a summer romance I guess. He was from Philadelphia but stationed at Cherry Point north Carolina. I actually went down there to visit him for a week after he left Halifax. And to this day we are still friends for over 25 years now. All the guys were cool and very respectful, good times and great memories! ❤

At 25:38, it wasn't the "afterburner " you saw. It was the F-14A dumping fuel. They just did it for the shot because there's no reason to do it in a combat engagement. I served aboard a Navy CV during the time this movie came out, and saw all of the aircraft the Navy used aboard their carriers during Flight Ops. In my opinion, the F-14 is still the most iconic aircraft the Navy used.

The song is Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins. The lyric is Highway to the danger zone,
I'll take you right into the danger zone.
Their Callsign are given to them, they don't pick them.
The Goose is a RIO, (radar intercept officer) he has no control over flying the plane. The plane is a Grumman F-14 Tomcat. It is predominantly a Carrier aircraft. The "Elastic" the plane catches to stop is actually the aircraft arresting system. The system is made up of steel wire ropes stretched across the deck and attached to hydraulic cylinders below deck. When the aircraft's tailhook catches a wire, the wire pulls, and the hydraulic cylinders absorb the energy to stop the plane. The piece sticking out the side is the refueling Arm. More than likely a KC-135 Stratotanker sends out a Drogue and the plane puts the Probe into the drogue and fule is transferred to the Fighter. The reason Charlie looked different in the elevator is because it was a reshootn and Kelly McGillis had Dark hair, as she was filming Witness.

Jester was played by Michael Ironside who was also in Total Recall, Karate Kid III and voices Sam Fisher (protagonist) in the famous Splinter Cell game franchise. He does have the most awesome voice.

You don't get to pick your own call sign. It's chosen for you.
F-14s were prone to compressor stalls, especially in the early models.
During ejections in a flat spin on f-14s the canopy was sometimes held in place by low pressure created by the aircraft and the seats could eject the crew into the canopy.

I was in the Navy stationed on a ship in San Diego when this was filmed. Hell yes there was smoking on the ship from revelry to lights out. I also lived on C Street and the scene where Charlie chased Maverick down is on the B Street hill, my wife and I walked over to watch the shoot.😊 They are not a copilot. They are a RIO (Radar Information Officer) They are flying F-14s and they are flying too close for combat plus if Iceman's plane had been hit by 30mm cannon fire at that speed it would break apart. But hey it's Hollywood 😊

Favorite movie of carrier sailors: Top Gun. That elastic thing on the deck: an arresting "cable" not elastic. And yes, I mean no.... Not an F-16. Looks... More like an F-14 Tomcat? Go figure. And, I can't believe there are still people who haven't seen this movie. 😎😵‍💫🇺🇲💙👍🛫

Top Gun is the cheesiest 80s movie to ever 80s and I LOVE IT! Top Gun: Maverick is a realistic Star Wars (original) and I LOVE IT MORE!
Both are immensely rewatchable and have deserved places in cinematic history and I honestly don't care who disagrees with me.
(FWIW, my brother is a military pilot and he found the sequel to be incredibly realistic.)

The guy in the backseat is not a co-pilot. He is the Radar Intercept Officer. He doesn't even have controls to fly the plane. And I wouldn't want to land on a carrier from the back seat. We do have unmanned aircraft that can do carrier landings today. but not back then. They make the dogfights happen at a higher altitude for safety. If you are above 10,000 ft it's less likely that someone dives into the ground. Although they keep showing the jeta flying very low in this movie. At this point in time, hardly any pilots had any air to air victorys so Maverick would have been considered an Ace and the best choise for a Top Gun instructor.

This movie & Rocky 4 are 2 of my all-time favorite movie soundtracks ever made. Did you hear Tom Cruise tell the story of how he vomited his first time riding in a fighter jet? Now that you saw this movie, you can watch 1 of my other top favorite Cruise movies, "Days of Thunder", or as I call it, "Top Gun with cars". You can also watch the comedy movie, "Hot Shots", which is so funny. All these years later, I still cry at the Goose dying scene. I cannot wait for them to see Top Gun 2. No spoilers, but I think we can place bets on the inevitable comments they will make about another popular movie while watching it.

The guy in the back is not a co-pilot, he is RIO. They are responsible for monitoring the radar and basically being the eyes and ears (and to tell where the enemies are) so the pilot can focus on flying. RIO does not have any controls for the plane. So if the pilot loses it, they are both in trouble.

  • @pduidesign

Pilots don’t choose their call signs. The other pilots (their peers) choose the call sign. Most of the time it is a little “dig” at some mistake they’ve made or something about their personality, both good or bad.

The ACES 2 ejection seat recovery system makes it impossible for Goose to die the way he did. No electronics needed for it to run, runs on something similar to det cord. Its pops the canopy off first then the seat second, in that sequence. Even if for some reason the canopy doesnt come off first, the seat is taller than all pilots and has a point at the top designed to destroy the canopy if the pilot seat has to go thru the canopy. The parachute uses electrolysis to detach the chute from the pilot in even the pilot lands in water unconscious. Earlier jets did not have the ACES 2 system, but the American F14 Tomcats portrayed in this movie should have it.

The F-14A model had the Martin Baker GRU-7A ejection seat. I do not know enough about that seat to know if it did or did not have the safety measure of being taller to break the canopy as you describe the ACES 2 seat having.

With the canopy jettisoning during a flat spin, it would not blow back out of the way but linger in the wake above the aircraft. Ejecting through the glass would have been better.

I was a Navy Brat growing up, born on a Marine Corp air base. The Navy and Marines are related, normal people dont know that. Anyway, this movie is somewhat realistic. And most stunts and etc are REAL in this movie. In fact, DOD authorized the use of 2 live missiles for the end fight scenes. It looked so real, an investigation was launched to see if they actually shot off more than just 2. PS .. You can see the cameras mounted to a few of the F-14's. No way around it. Currently the Navy's main plane of choice is the F/A-18 Super Hornet. Check out any US Navy Blue Angles 4k videos. I N S A N E ! ! And one of the sexiest looking jets ever forged from a steel mill!
