- Woke up in Bryson City, NC to chase the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad's Nantahala Gorge excursion, powered by the Queen of the Smokies, Baldwin-built 2-8-0 type S160 steam locomotive number 1702. The day started off with a chase of the 1702 moving lite from the railroad's engine shops to the excursion consist, which, all in all, meant I just about chased 1702 along the entire GSMR system in a single day. Pretty cool! Thanks for railfanning with me today, and don't forget to like, comment and subscribe if you enjoyed the video!
Great Video! I Will Be There Tomorrow To Chase This Same Run With 1702. This Video Helped Alot On Knowing Where To Go!!
Thank you! I hope your chase went well, and am glad I could provide some context
Again fantastic shots. Good ol s160, little thoroughbreds.
Were goin up here in March to escape from bikeweek, hoping to catch a ride on GSMR, likely a diesel tour.
Hopefully they'll have their new GP38-3m repainted and operating by then! I think they said something about a red white and blue paint scheme, definitely gonna look good...
@@FloridaRailfan oh thatd be fantastic. Im just hoping theres no early spring snow that week , which always seems to happen. Also gonna try and hit Saluda and Yadkin... just have to come up with "valid reasons" for the misses to 😄. Thankfully your vids point out some great spots on YVRR
@@schnauzahpowahz Yeah, chasing YVRR is pretty easy just as long as you're up early with them out of Winston, or intercept them in Elkin for the return trip. Also might be worth your while to check out Blue Ridge Southern, especially if you'll be hanging around Bryson City / Asheville.
I’m here now and took the train ride yesterday. Found out 1702 is going be there tomorrow, definitely going to check it out in the morning.
It's worth an extra day to check out for sure!
@@FloridaRailfan highlight of my trip. Chased it for a little but down the tracks, then went to see some waterfalls and when we got back to Bryson City it just crossed the tracks to the depot. I hung out for awhile and seen them move it on the turn table to park it for the night.
Brilliant video, well done! Appreciate to watch! Best Regards Railherbie from Germany
Thank you very much!
I chased the 1702 on the whole trip today and got it at most of the spots you did. This video helped me and my group to know where to go so I appreciate the help!
Awesome, glad I could provide some insight. GSMR never fails to impress...
Excellent coverage on one of the truly classic excursion operations in the east.
Thank you, it definitely is one of my favorites
I'd say so. We saw it today but, this footage is reallly good.
You got some great footage there. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much
@@FloridaRailfan I watched it a couple times. Then, shared with a friend who was taking pictures with me the other day when it rolled through the gorge. My footage just doesn't compare to your snazzy work. :)
@@paulorientetheluffaranch Ha I very much appreciate it, it’s great to read encouraging comments like yours. Maybe I’ll see you out there
@@FloridaRailfan Who know? Maybe. Our whole channel is about something positive. A word of encouragement can sure go far.
This was the first railroad I ever rode on and I went back to it in 2016 when they got 1702 running again, when I first rode in 2005 it had already been retired
That's cool.
Gotta go ride this train one day if possible. Great video, thanks for sharing. Dave
Highly recommend. Its a beautiful journey, awesome power and great people
Wow what a great video, that place look awesome 👍🏽
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed!
Thank you so much for the video it was awesome
Thank you!
Awesome One, Hope 1702 can do some freight charters soon
That would certainly be a sight
When going downhill, use lower gears instead of riding the brakes; doing the latter will wear out the brake pads and rotors much quicker.
Being from Florida, this was my first experience driving mountain roads. Appreciate the advice, hadn’t given engine braking much thought.
@@FloridaRailfan It's okay. Using the engine to slow down is like using the dynamic braking feature on diesel locomotives.
The boxcar you saw on the ledge has been there about year. They built a small spur next to the shop by the boxcar.
Interesting, thanks!
I forgot instead of a Modified Hancock long bell 3 chime it’s a Southern 3 chime
Any news on the 722? Wish they would at least do a cosmetic restoration on it.
No news that I’m aware of...
Trade it to 3 rivers rambler. IMHO.
Cass Scenic or tvrm would probably love to get their hands on it
why Spencer Shop could have used her too 722 belongs to Carolina.
I loved the video! Wish I would have made the trek down there last year!
Appreciate it! Certainly an awesome chase, you gotta check it out
@@FloridaRailfan What time in August was this filmed? I can tell by the heavy downpour.
@@BNSF36542 I believe the first or second Thursday of August 2020
Hello! Quick question. Where was the spot at 6:35?
That's a spot along Jacobs Road, just west of Bryson City
Nice video! How do you find out when the steam engine is running? I’ll be going up through that area on Saturday April 3rd.
Thanks a lot, just go to www.gsmr.com, they’ve got a full train schedule that distinguishes between diesel and steam powered trains
Thanks! I appreciate it!
i bet the diesels help out on hills... maybe not but thats my suspicion
