Best great smoky mountains railroad 1702 run-by scene at 4:52. I love that southern railway 3 chime that's a better whistle than the others. I seriously love that locomotive she is now one of my favorite locomotives.
I wonder why some American and British steam engines have two different whistle-sound valves? One British steam engine example is LNER A1 Tornado. Tornado has a high-pitched whistle and a slightly deeper toned whistle, which makes her sound a bit like Britannia, a 7MT engine.
There's really only 3 places to shoot the train - Cass itself, the Back Mountain Rd crossing and the Gum Rd crossing. The engines will be working harder at Gum Rd. You can pretty comfortably get the train leaving Cass and then beat it to either crossing, but you can't beat the train between the crossings with enough time to set up a camera. Just up from the Gum Rd crossing there is a farm above which you can see the train through a gap in the trees as it climbs the switchback, but the property owners don't like railfans so you may be runoff even if you're just standing on the side of the road. I'd recommend also checking out the Durbin Rocket, it can be seen at the depot in town as well as at the very end of the (unpaved) River Rd where you can either shoot across the river or hike across a swinging bridge to the iconic curve shot. Make sure to download offline maps before leaving home as there is absolutely no cell phone service anywhere in the area due to the radio telescope in Green Bank.
@@SmokyMtnSteam The whistle was made from plans of a real Southern Railway Steptop 3 Chime like Southern 154 wore during the charter (the dollywood whistle) and like 4501. Much better than that Rizzoli Ps4 copy. The crew seems to like it as well. I'm hoping this one stays. Now... If I can convince them to build a IC 6 Chime...
@@Heisler91 Perhaps one could also convince them to either track down or make a replica of the type of whistle her sisters overseas in the U.K. are wearing. Ah well. One can dream.
Glad you got to see it too! Sadly, I didn't get the chance to go and ride, though I would've loved to! (For the record, I did get to see, and ride behind this beauty back on Labor Day Sunday 2018, which was the first time I'd been to the GSMR in 13 years. Even cooler was the fact that my grandpa and my step-grandma got to ride on the GSMR behind 1702 a couple days ago.) Also, Any Plans to visit Dollywood again in the near future?

Now great smoky mountains railroad 1702 is officially sounding southern railway locomotive.
I was thinking about going to The Cass Scenic Railroad the 4th of July. What are the best spots?

@@SmokyMtnSteam OK. Thanks for the info!
I'm guessing the railroad company found the southern railway 3 chime very suitable and fitting.
1702 is starting to sound like a southern locomotive.
Fitting for an old Southern branchline.

Well that's a better whistle than the other ones she used to have. That's much better!
A trick : watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
Nice Job!
Thanks!

I personally liked its other whistle better. It had a deeper more brute sound too it, but I love this whistle too
by far my favorite 2-8-0 :)
2:26 Amazing wheelslip

Awesome.

I went to Dollywood on Wednesday and might go back sometime next weekend.
@@SmokyMtnSteam Alright! Have fun!
How long does it take the ride we planning to go there
about 4.5 hours
Nice video
Thanks
So are you going to go back to the great smoky mountains railroad soon?
They are diesel-only through the winter, I'll be back when steam returns in the late spring or early summer
That's good. But what's the next railroad you'll be visiting next?
@@Thomasboi01 probably TVRM in March
That wheelslip at 2:27.
Nice, but whistle got nothing on Klondike Katie or Cinderella from Dollywood 🚂
Hello! What road is near the locations at 13:32?
E Hellards Rd. If your trying to find it on Google maps it wont show up but its off US 74 just north of "Mystic Lands"
@@SmokyMtnSteam Thanks so much!
What whistle is she wearing?
A Rizzoli replica of a Southern 3 chime.
@@radforddivisionrailfan I dont believe its Rizzoli. I think i heard it was shop built by a crew member
@@radforddivisionrailfan It's not Rizzoli. It was custom made by a shop member using plans from a real Southern Railway Steptop 3 Chime.
Ah, ok. Still sounds nice regardless who made it.
2:26 perfect timing lol.
