After testing it was put in storage, not display (well, you could see it at the INRD shops from the road). I was fortunate to see it on an INRD road train once but it wasn't leading. @@floridarailfan Caterpillar has revamped them into the “J-1010 ?” Engine as a 12 cylinder T4. I worked on a few before I retired in 2019. Never saw the need for 6000HP anyway. One loco goes down & you lose half of the HP for the train. They got rid of the SD9043s because they caused a crack in the frames by torquing the fuel tanks tightly to the frame when it was designed as a “floating” mount. I think NS picked some of these up got rid of the Siemens inverters & controller & rebuilt them with EM2000 inverter control & Mitsubishi inverters like the 70 aces. The 6000 HP 4 cycle H engine on the phase 2 locos (UP8500 & above) had a vibration that caused the oil pans to crack. GM skimped on allowing EMD anymore R&D money to resolve the issue & they eventually just bailed on the locomotive. GM had wanted out of the locomotive business since the early 80’s & had told EMD they were on their own financially. It’s amazing they survived as long as they did.

the abandoned part is the R line, the other is the K line. The two lines went through town apart from each other. they crossed each other at the south end of town, and the R line continued south known as the WSSB. the K line, currently the only line in use, goes to greensboro.
the line was cut out at winston yard around 2008 if im correct.. the diamond was replaced and tracks re-aligned for a turnout, that is controlled by radio dtmf tone.
the R line road bed was purchased by the city of Winston Salem and was turned into a walkway for all the modern projects downtown such s turning the RJ Ryenolds tobacco plants into condos, businesses, research parks, and extensions of the WSSU campus.
