Sorry! The correct timestamp to skip the story spoilers is 44:29 !
Watch the original retrospective here, it is an awesome video: ua-cam.com/video/poMnJKLGYo0/v-deo.html
I hope everyone enjoyed the video, due to holidays and some late study deadlines i will probably upload next somewhere in early september! Hopefully next time i won't have to re-record a 50 minute voice over twice.

This was a great watch my dude! I'm really happy you put this together as I feel like it really confirms that I was right to not cover the game and leave it to others! There is no way I could have put this together, especially given how cool it was to hear the history of the game from someone who legitimately played it!

They also did some of the best and smartest plot twists I remember in a video game. When you are fighting in the battle of Minas Tirith the first time, the riders of Rohan won't come to help, the witch king slays Gandalf and the war is lost. what the hell ?? Then you wake up. It was just a dream, or a vision before the battle started. Then you will be send away to look for the riders of Rohan. You eventually find them and must help them to get to Minas Tirith in time and fight in the battle of the pelenor fields.
The smart trick about this is, that you as a player can experience the siege of Minas Tirith AND the battle on the pelenor fields alongside the Rohirims. Pretty cool!

Wow, this was really incredible! I have been playing LOTRO since the beta, but it was really moving to see all the stories laid out, and to reflect over all the work and details that were places into the game. This video really highlighted that!
For me, LOTRO has always been the most faithful adaptation of Tolkiens works, and apart from it’s minor blemishes, when reading the books it is usually what I visualize.

Awesome video. I played LOTRO religiously from SoA to through the Isengard expansion, but took a long break. I come back to the game every few years to catch up on the epic story and explore the zones. The storylines never disappoint. I'm not a fan of the F2P and shop model, but the story and characters you meet along the way still hold up. I really loved the Minas Morgul and Gundabad storylines, facing down Hrimil Frost-Heart not once, but twice in raids was awesome. Thanks for the great vid!

I know you were following the main epic story and you did a very good job! This is only scratching the surface of the story content in this game. In addition, there are probably hundreds of side stories along with major components of the story told from within the instances and raids. I run across new elements almost every time I play through the game. I've taken 3 characters now through from level 1 to level 140. Depending on the zones you select to level through the experience is different every time. Once I did Northdowns, Evendim, Forochel and Angmar. Then another time I focused on Lone Lands, Misty Mountains, Eregion, and Moria. Sometimes I would do the Epic in an area and sometimes not. :)

Ideas for the future! Stories from raids are currently definitely a blind spot for me as i have only really played Draigoch and the Rise of Isengard instance cluster.

Many thanks for this and well done. Playing LOTRO since 2012 it is always nice to have the beauty of the game reaffirmed by other players, because in the daily, sometimes grinding business of the game one can easily forget to pause and look from above at all the wonderful features LOTRO offers…

For the "Volumes" for the Main Quests, there is also the Epic Quest Volume V: The Peace of Middle-Earth with it's Book 1 focusing on the Wedding of King Elessar and Arwen Undomiel on the day of Midsummer.
Volume V Book 1 can be started the moment a Character gets out of the Intro & enters the Main Game World and is started in Minas Tirith (Midsummer) with King Elessar in the Tower of Ecthelion in the Throne Room with the Quests being set to the Level of the Character.

    Magnificé!
As a player of LOTRO since 2008, you did a very well job capturing the selling points and enduring passion I myself has had for the game over the years.
There's so much more I wish one could pay attention to, but the rest of your channel already is a work unto itself in that direction. You condensed it very well.
No game comes close to honouring the source material than LOTRO does. It is sumptuous, detailed, thoroughly comprehensive and detailed beyond compare.
For all its faults and warts, the game holds a precious place in my heart and actually helped deepen my love and appreciation for the canon. I encourage anyone interested in the Professor's legendarium to give it a try.

What a great work! I loved hearing and seeing your synopsis of the epic story. Indeed, while I love the movies, the game has made me appreciate the whole Gondor arc - and other details overall - far more. Fighting your way through destroyed Osgiliath, retaking Pelargir, and certain events during the siege that I don't want to spoil for anyone... and than joining a host doomed to be defeated at the Black Gate just so that others can have a chance of survival... well and than there's that conclusion to the Gundabad story, that captivated me much more than I ever anticipated.
It definitely has it's merits to play a game that can take all the time the developers can give it to tell the stories it wants to tell, without having to worry about the utmost possible length of a movie.
So thanks for this great video that I think really does the game's story aspect justice!

This was a nice video, but frankly, it left me wanting for a (probably much longer) video, in which instead of just recapping the story you analyzed some of its themes. To take one example: when can people of different cultures and races put aside their differences and unite? This starts as far back as the Elf/Dwarf prologue, and to take a few other points along the way, comes up in the North Downs part of Volume I (the Council of the North), the joint elf/dwarf expedition to Dol Goldur, your time in Volume III adventuring with Horn, Nona, and Corudan (none of who you even mentioned in the recap!), the mixed Dunlending/Rohirrim villages in Western Rohan, the not-always-violent encounters with Easterlings and Nurnhoth and (especially) Stout-Axes in Mordor, the elves and dwarfs and humans (both natives and refugees) in the Strongholds of the North, and the Zhelruka/Longbeard interactions over the many areas leading up to Gundabad. For extra credit, how does this compare to what Tolkien himself did in LOTR itself? Compare and contrast the treatment of the Orcs and Dunlendings after the Battle of Helm's Deep, for example, or just the (arguably contradictory) way the books treat orcs compared to how the game treats orcs.

      @user-je8pn4up7r 2 роки тому +9

Seconding everything you've said! Lotro is not extraordinary merely by faithfully adapting a beloved world, but also by having passionately written stories that very much respect the professor's own themes. Jalapeno mentioned overcoming racism and prejudice, and there is also estel vs despair (see the Elven brothers, Golodir and Corunir, the Grey Company, Grimbold, Athelward, Mágla and more), the folly of hubris (see Zigilburk, Denethor's Palantir, Eärnur, Arvedui), pity and mercy (Lothrandir and Mercy herself, Bingo Boffin), duty, honour, heroism, and love (unrequited and doomed). The way these stories are told is simply beautiful, and worthy of Middle-earth.
But there's more. Beyond telling stories untold, the devs have managed to capture the essence of Middle-earth in a way that no other adaptation has. The fondness that comes of reading LOTR, and travelling through familiar and foreign countries, is present manyfold in Lotro. The music, ambience and storytelling give one an indelible sense of place. Stories of the vulgar and the noble, the thankless and the praised, heartbreaking and joyous. What Tolkien has left broadly sketched has been animated with detail and verity. The very mythos, culture and language of various cultures (Sami, Welsh/Brittonic, Gothic, Anglo-Saxon, Norse, Byzantine and Mediterranean) are drawn upon, and coupled with imagination to form the rich fictional cultures. And some (Angmarrim, Eglain, Algraig) are original, but click perfectly with the world.
TLDR: Lotro's thematic stories and rich worldbuilding are in need of *very* comprehensive video essays.

I have played to current endgame with one character and through most of it with a few more so this wasn’t a spoiler for me, but it did remind me of some things I had forgotten and flagged a couple things I had missed. awesome video as always! my only "criticism" is that you gave very little insight on how playing the game actually looks like, combat and questing etc., i think a lot of people watching this, who have never played the game themselves, would not have a great understanding on how actually playing the game is/was like. your retelling of LotROs story however was one of the (if not the) best i have seen on UA-cam or anywhere else so far!

I've played lotro from Jan. 2008 - Oct 2009. So almost 2 years. And then had a short rerun in early 2012 for a few months.
Vanilla Lotro back in the day, before moria was a great experience during a great time.
I was 22, moved in with my girlfriend, we both had a lot of free time to spend ingame and we were willing to do just that.
Nowadays, that feels like a different life back then. It was our first MMO, which always adds a layer a magic ontop.
I will never be able to recreate the feeling of it beeing 4am on Sunday, Moria released a few days ago and me, my girlfriend and our guild are trying to clear the new dungeons and finally beat it, after like 4 hours of trying to understand and deal with the new mechanics. Back then, it felt like an achievment, nowadays, with 39 years on my back, it feels like wasted time.

    Thanks for this!
I’ve been playing off and on since beta, sometimes taking years off, but I only completed the Black Book last week.
The end of that quest line hits so much harder when it’s all laid out like this. Seeing how Ëarnur/Mordirith/Gothmog has been the player’s nemesis throughout the story is really cool and highlights just how well the story writing is in LoTRO. It can be easy to lose sight of when gameplay is spread over 15 years and with thousands of other quests going on around the main story.
I love how the player is always on the edge of the main story of LOTR without becoming too involved. While you meet the Fellowship, they have their quests and you have yours. Sometimes they align and sometimes you are far from them. But you have your own story.
I hope they can continue on for a while longer. And even if they run out of stories to tell, I hope the servers stay up for decades. Or at least until another game comes along where you can find so much enjoyment just riding a horse through middle earth seeing the sights you’ve read about so many times.

Fantastic video, it really captures the grand scope of LOTRO. Your narration and editing are terrific. I do suggest using shorter solid black transitions unless you put some text or chapter cues in them. Great job, and I plan to return and watch the part between Edoras and your conclusion, I skipped that much because even though I’ve been playing for two years I am not quite up to that point in the story yet!

Much like Lotro this is a video I’ve now returned to a couple of times months apart and I just wanted to say what a beautifully put together piece it is. It sums up very well what makes the game so great and unique. I first played Lotro as a young teenager and have now returned to playing it as young father. And I hope to one day still be playing it perhaps with my kid when he grows up!

This was fun to listen to. I played this for many years, but stopped for a few, and when I tried to return, my server was gone along with Turbine and my characters were gone too. Never had the heart to return.
I think ultimately things would have been better if they chose a different time period. Essentially, everything in the game happens within 1, maybe 2 years. And people have been playing for over 10 years, the amount of movement your character does in that time with all the quests is hard to believe once you start thinking too much about it.
Its a great game though and I enjoyed my time with it. But I think the best games that capture the feeling of the world are actually the tabletop RPGS, The One Ring.

I know this is an older comment, but as this is a common misconception I wanted to clear it up: Turbine took over the game development in 2001. Codemasters joined as a publisher for the european market in 2006 but the developer was still Turbine. In 2010 Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment bought Turbine and as a result a year later in 2011 Codemasters left and Turbine took over the publishing in the europen market themselfs. So while many players only knew Codemasters because they sold the game in the first years, the developer was always Turbine from the beginning. In 2016 Standing Stone Games was founded with the staff from Turbine and at the same time Daybreak Game Company took over the publishing. So while the company had a new name, the people where still mostly the same as before. Of course we don't know how many of the original Turbine staff are still working at SSG today.
