  • Nikon replaced the entry-level EM SLR with the FG in the mid 1980s. The FG represented a substantial improvement over the EM, which was basically an interchangeable-lens point-and-shoot camera. The FG introduced numerous improvements such as full manual controls, aperture-priority mode shooting, and a very competent program mode. An additional feature, the FG was Nikon's only amateur-level film camera with TTL OTF flash controls. Nikon replaced the FG with the FG-20, a step-down in that the FG-20 lacked the TTL OTF controls.

    Although Nikon doesn't recommend using the newer G lenses, as a experiment I tried using some of mine in particular my 14-24mm f2.8 and surprisingly it worked, OK you are limited to the lens being fully stopped down and in "A" aperture priority but the shutter speed worked out by the camera is very similar speed to using the same lens in aperture priority on my D850.

    • @DavidHancock

      Yeah, the G lenses are a bit frustrating. I learned the hard way this summer that some old Nikon DSLRs don't accept G lenses.

    I am following your videos all the time. They are very informative and also passionate which is good. Thank you! I would compare the FG to the double-digit OM bodies like the 10 and 20, maybe most closely the 10. The single-digit OM bodies would have competed with the next tier up or the professional bodies despite having slightly fewer features than, for instance, the F3.

      Got it. Okay, in "A" mode the camera will simply tell you which shutter speed it will use based on your aperture. So what you'll do is set the camera to "A" and adjust the aperture as you see fit, the light will tell you the selected shutter speed.

      Check that the batteries are installed correctly and that they're also good (if they sat for a long time on a store shelf, they could still have discharged.) Most likely, one or both ended up installed upside-down.

    Hi! Thank you for the video - really enjoyed it, super informative. I have a Nikon FG and am having a small issue. I believe I have taken around 10 photos more or less on a new roll of film, however, when I re-crank to load a new slot, the counter on the camera indicates that I am hovering around S, dot, dot, 1, 2. I have definitely taken more photos on this roll of film than what it is saying. Do you reckon this is because I loaded the film incorrectly? A potential blank roll to come?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 роки тому

      Hmm. A few potential issues come to mind. Most likely is that the frame counter isn't advancing because it's stuck or some other malfunction has occurred. A second option is that the film back isn't fully closed, which would prevent the frame counter from advancing (I believe.) A third option is that there's detritus or something like that in the frame counter rest button (which is in the back of the camera so that it works automatically.)
      I'd start testing by taking the camera to a dark closet with no light and seeing if you can easily pull the film back open without lifting on the rewind knob. If yes, then just close it more securely and continue shooting as though you just loaded a new roll of film.
      If that doesn't happen, after you finish your roll of film then take a look in the channel where the film back (door) and the camera's back meet. Top channel, right side, there's a small little switch or indent (I forget which and I have none of these on hand right now to check against.) If there's a visible switch, just make sure that it can move freely.
      If both of those are unsuccessful, then it's possible that the frame counter got jammed at some point (not an uncommon issue with these, unfortunately.) It won't affect the camera's operation, but your ability to track which frame you're on. I have a few cameras that I use that do that. It's annoying.

      @spencergiorgio 3 роки тому +1

      @@DavidHancock hi! this is incredibly helpful, thank you so much, Dave. Really appreciate the willingness to jump on here and articulate all these potential issues. Hello. I just got me a FG about a week ago. Looking forward to developing some pictures once I finish my first roll. I do have a question for you. I acquired my FG from eBay and just recently observes a few specs on the mirror of the FG. Also, having a closer look I noticed that the mirror might have been buffed (liked when you wax your car) because their light circled marks. The only thing I can compare it is the waxing of a car because I remember how it would leave the car's paint when reflected by the sun.
    Thank you for the videos. I enjoy them and they are helpful.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  10 років тому

      You're very welcome and I hope you get some great photos.
      The circles you describe are probably cleaning circles. The mirrors are surface coated, so any kind of cleaning can leave permanent scars. The dust in the viewfinder won't affect images. You may be able to clean it with a rocket blower (don't use canned air or a vacuum.) If that doesn't work, you can clean the focusing screen just like you would a lens, but being careful not to damage the foam mirror bumper.

      Thank you for the information. I will make a decision on taking it in for a check-up or to get it cleaned.

    Hello David! Thank you for posting these videos. I am starting off using film and I am starting on the P mode to hopefully gravitate onto the more advanced levels. However when I am on the P mode I see two flashing arrows, do you know what this means and how to fix it?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 роки тому

      Is the lens set to the highest aperture number (usually 16 or 22) and if you lens had a locking switch (such as with the 50mm f/1.8 AI-D) is that switch set to UNlock? Generally two arrows indicates that either the lens is not set to the smallest aperture (highest number) or the lock is engaged on lenses with those.

      Thank you, Ross, and you should be fine. The camera should pick the best shutter speed for the aperture. If there was too much light you'll have think (dark) negatives that take a bit longer to print and that have a bit more digital noise when scanned.

    how do I do double exposures with this camera?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 років тому

      The mechanical process is that after you take your first shot you need to hold the film rewind knob AND the film release button on the bottom while you move the film advance lever. That keeps the film in place but re-arms the shutter. Make sure that you adjust your exposure accordingly for the number of exposures and after ward make sure to cover the lens and take a dead frame to prevent your next image from overlapping your multiple-exposure shot.

    but the speed itsnt changing

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  10 років тому

      M guess is that it's a settings issue. In both modes the shutter speed will change based on the aperture setting on the lens. Without film in the camera, try different settings and watch the shutter with the camera's back open. Most shutter speeds sound the same but will look slightly different. It's easier to tell if a speed is actually different by the light coming through than by sound.
      Let me know if that helps. If that doesn't solve it, I'll get my FG and try to replicate the issue and let you know what I find in the process.

      This camera will shoot whatever you'd like. With color negative or slide film it shoots color. With black and white film it shoots black and white. The greatest part about film cameras is that you can shoot a dozen or more different films in a day and have great and different results from each. • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  9 років тому +1

      +Glen Converse Shuck yes, you're right, thank you. The E.C. button causes the camera to automatically overexpose the image by two stops. It's ideal for when the subject is in shade (say under the awning of a cafe) and the background is bright (for instance mid-day sun.) That sort of setting would bias the sensor to expose for the bright sun and not the subject. So the E.C. button adds two stops of light (for instance, 1/500th of a second would become 1/125th) so that the subject is properly exposed.

    You need to learn how to load a film camera. Was not the films fault. Cutting it did nothing except chop off a couple of frames. Take up the slack in the film by pushing it back into the canister with your left thumb while holding it taut with your right hand. Then advance once the film is tight between the spools.
