    I use the same methods to make my hammocks. It's so great to be able to make a lot of hammocks very fast and even make them in different shapes. Cool video!

    The bit at the end with all of them in their wee hammocks is so cute!

    My hardware store told me that keyring rings are usually cheaper than shower curtain rings. And you can also use metal chainlink chains that they use for for instance hanging cuckoo clocks weights on or for the plug in a sink. And I also use simple 'dollar store' baskets for their cage.

    I also have been a connoisseur of binder clips and the girls love to flip the wing? Up and down. Lol.

    Ahh! I'm so excited, somehow I managed to get my step dad to say yes to me getting rats!! Now I'm going to go to the SPCA soon and get a pair of boys. They apparently have 13 rats right now and there's a pair of 8 week old boys which sounds perfect! I have no idea how I managed to get my step dad to say yes! He just has two conditions, I keep them in my room, and I don't tease him with them. By that he means don't chase him around with them, or make them chase him lol. Just a couple months ago I would have thought that he would never ever say yes.

      Savannah W How great for you, Savannah! You will LOVE pet rats! They may be a bit shy at first, but just spend lots of time letting them get used to use and they will warm up to you quickly. My advice if they are a bit shy at being handled at first or are afraid of being picked up is to get some yogurt - my boys like most flavors, but it’s easy and healthy to get plain yogurt and mix in just a little honey to make it sweeter. Then dip your fingers into the yogurt and let the boys lick it off. Keep doing this each time you go to the cage and they will start coming right to the front when you open the door! They will get used to your hands and associate them with getting something yummy. Good luck with your new baby boy ratties! My two boys are now 8 months old and sweet as can be! And they still love to lick yogurt of my hands 😛... silly boys!

      Laura B thanks so much! I've wanted rats for so long. I had a really tough year this year regarding friends, I ended up loosing all but one friend and now I only have two freinds. I've wanted rats to provide companionship when people can't. I can't wait until Wednesday, that's when we will probably be going to the SPCA. I have the cage already, I just need to sew a bunch of liners and hammocks. Thanks so much for the advice! I'm very excited, but also a little nervous about it.

      Hi Savannah -- I don't know your age, but it sounds like you are maybe in high school or middle school? Yeah, I get what you are saying about pets (especially rats!) being "true-blue" while so-called friends can be fickle, especially in school. I am 46, but I completely understand what you are experiencing. I really hope things improve with your friends, but remember that one or two really good friends are better than a hundred so-so friends. I know adults always say "when you get older," and it sounds so lame, but...when you get older, you will probably be happiest with just a few very close friends (and maybe some sweet pets). There are a lot of folks I know with TONS of friends, but very few of their friends would be there for them during the hard times. I'm guessing your step-father knows you need a bit of extra TLC and that's why he agreed to getting the rats. What do you want to bet that if you spend a lot of time with your new babies and train them, your step-father will fall in love with them, too? Good luck! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your life to get better! Oh, and I thought I should tell you my rats' names: they are brothers, and one's name is "Peeka" and the other is "Boo." Cute, huh?

      Laura B I always have only had a couple close friends and a few not very close friends at all. Well this year my best freind for 6 years told me she no longer wanted to be my freind which left me all alone. I had another freind but she and I aren't close at all. I managed to make another friend though who I connected with really strongly. Thanks so much! Things have been getting better finally and I'm off to a lather school with new people where hopefully I can make a couple new friends. If not at least I'll still have my ratties at home waiting for me. My step dad told me if it would make me happy I could get rats even though he despises them. I had a hamster before and he didn't like people at all. He didn't bite, he just didn't like being touched. A hamster just doesn't provide the companionship I'm looking for. I'm very thankful he said yes even though he really isn't happy with the thought of them. I'm hoping if they are really friendly he will fall in love with them. Aww, those names are so cute! I'm pretty terrible at naming pets lol.

    Ooo. Love the safety pins. Never considered those. I do use the same method I’d the hooks on the mini bungee cords. Here I thought I invented that. Lol. Thanks for all the tips. I have been making my own hammocks from about a month after getting my girls when I saw how fast they chewed through them. So they turn out to pretty much be disposable.
    My sneaky girls sometimes get bored and chew “around” the metal hangers (errrrr) but since they have gotten older that is rare. Maybe it has something to do with them chewing through while chillin’ IN the hammock at the time. Sooooo. Yeah. “Thump!” 👀🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️
    I’m always learning so thank you

    What great (and easy) ideas! I love the repurposed pants especially. I recently did a similar thing with a pair of worn out jeans, only I made tunnels instead of hammocks, so they have these loooong tunnels from one side of the DCN to the other. There are really so many things rats enjoy that are not at all expensive! It just takes some creativity...

    Cute ideas however, never use safety pins!!!! Rats will play with them and couple possibly open them and get hurt. Best to use metal or plastic shower curtain holders.

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  4 роки тому +2

      My problem with shower curtain holders is I've seen so many posts of rats being strangled. I've never had a safety pin open in 5+ years of using them, and that's not to say they can't open because I'm sure they can, but I feel they are a safer alternative to most. You definitely don't have to use them though and one good alternative is c clips (what I use the most now - basically a hard plastic chain that can be added to easily).

    Why do you use felt in particular? Can I use another fabric?

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  3 місяці тому +1

      I just use felt because I typically get the cheap pre-cut ones and that makes hammock making easier since I don't have to cut the fabric. But fleece, polyester, cotton, etc. work just as well.

  • @charlottemoocow
    @charlottemoocow 6 років тому +1

    I appreciate that you may not be able to answer this; my boys are big (one is 550g and other is 730g!!), do you think the felt and safety pin hammock would cope with them? I have been making them out of canvas and my sewing machine but it’s hard work and the felt looks so easy! Thanks

    • @sherifftallin962
      @sherifftallin962 6 років тому +1

      Charlotte Moo maybe you can use a thicker fabric like jean, then placing felt on top?

  • @comhrai
    @comhrai 5 років тому +1

    i thought felt was not good for rats, because of the looping fabric

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  5 років тому +2

      I'm not sure what you mean by "looping" but felt is actually one of the safest fabrics. Like fleece if bitten or cut it doesn't unravel so it can't get tangled around the rats, and like fleece it also allows urine and water to seep through so if one wants you can use it as a main substrate with under pads.
      Personally I just use it for hammocks and such as I use loose bedding in the cage, but its one of the nicer things to make rat fabric items out of.
      Towels would be dangerous however, as would clothing made from fabric that can easily unravel.

      It’s think it’s pretty clear this is just an example cage lol, my rats have a GIANT double critter nation and aren’t lacking in anything. If I want all hammocks in one clip though I’d either have to only leave them in the normal cage which is just mean to the rats or I could put them in a small cage with only these hammocks after free range to show how they look when used (which is what I did).
