    Great seeing you Doug again. Couple of more pieces of info regarding the ranger etc presentation. The a-500 ish mockup was code named b-52 (yes that codename was used even at Los Gatos). This was named by George Robbins (RIP) who was working along with Bob Weland to cost reduce the chipset (which later was used in the a500 and the Haynie B2000).
    The plan from very early was to have a small desk family friendly machine that became the 500 and an expandable machine that could be used for business (2000). The expandable machine (2000) was code named ranger. Ranger was not an advanced video chipset.
    The plexiglass with the white foam drives in it was a "thermal mockup" used to test that with a bunch of zorro boards etc were cool within that enclosure. Looking closely you will see the actual zorro boards in that box are in fact veroboards with big resistors on them just to generate heat.
    The machine you showed at the very end was a Byte by Byte PAL Jr expansion box on an amiga 1000. Not an amiga product but connected to the zorro story. Amiga was going to have an expansion box for the 1000 and Scott Peterson of Byte by Byte approached commodore when it was clear that an expansion box nor expandable amiga was close on the horizon. Scott brought in Brad Carvey (Dana Carvey's) brother to design the electronics of the PAL Jr. They worked with commodore from the Los Gatos office in its development (Dale Luck was one of the primary contacts for the Byte by Byte team). They were given permission to sell (and make) some zorro boards. These were zorro 1 (the square shape not what we know as the elongated Zorro II). These were Gigaram memory expansion and a ST-506 disk controller (it should of also been scsi but apparently that was buggy at the time of release). This board later was relayed out into what we know as the 2090). Byte by Byte sole ~300 of these expansion modules to high end amiga customers (such as sandia national labs) which helped that immediate expansion need until the 2000 came out.

      Thanks for the clarification, Chris! I will pin this comment. I need to do a full report on just the Ranger stuff. Maybe you and I can collaborate on that

    Wish I could have spent more time there, especially after seeing all the great photos you posted in the video. I missed that your son was there! Would have been great to see him again.

      At least we got to see each other for a few minutes. And I look forward to your interview with Daniel from "Doki Doki Literature Club" - he is a great guy

    Here in Germany in the beautiful city of Mönchengladbach was recently the Amiga 38. Dave Haynie, Robert Mical, David Pleasence, Beth Richards were also here to name a few guests. The CDTV's co-developer was also live via Skype. My last fair visit was the Amiga 1995 in Cologne. For me the visit had a big meaning because our friend is still alive. I was also very happy that there were many visitors and that also young people are interested in it. It is always nice to see that there are still events for our Amiga.

    Had a great time at the show and it was awesome to see ya again.
    I was so busy for most of the show I hardly got to hang out and check out the wares.

      Always a good time hanging out my friend. I made a point to spend more time talking to other people at their booths this years since it is so easy to get caught up doing your thing at your booth. As always, I wish I had taken more pictures and videos.

      I think he will enjoy that Amiga 1200 quite a bit! I bet he will paint it like he did his A500.

    Great video and nice shots at the end! I liked Barkbit's mod very much. Maybe he could write me a new theme! Very interesting about the Ranger too, looks like you guys had a great time.

      Yes, Mike took most of those shots. He is a great photographer! Barkbit is quite talented for sure. I just love "Skyripper"

    Dark chambers on that Atari rolling screen ... excellent choice 👊

      Don't know why that one decided to scroll. Most of the other games worked fantastic! That TV/VCR is awesome but there are no controls for vertical hold on it!
      I use it for my Atari 8 bit and C64 stuff at home and it is rock solid

    The A2000 should have looked like a double or tripple height A1000, complete with keyboard garage. The boring grey A2000 case we got from the Germans should have been used for Commodore PCs.

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  8 місяців тому

      I tend to agree that the A2000 looks a bit on the boring side compared to the A1000, A500 and A3000! I do love the expandability of it, though.

    Gary Hare.... I spoke to him at Amiwest 2003 for a bit? He seemed smart and I had such high hopes when he got involved. And then nothing really eventuated. I can't be sure he wasn't just clever at telling lies. I guess it was the court case era so its not surprising nothing really happened. My memories are of my luggage being stolen....so.....I'm not fond of Amiwest I'm afraid. A year or so later I happened to get transferred to an IT software project in Sacramento for a couple of months. It was such a boring place for someone single to live, I transferred back to LA as fast as I could. It's probably a good place to raise a family though and a few or my colleagues stayed. That said, I've gone to Australian monthly meetups which felt almost as big, which is to say fairly small. Not sure why I'm sharing this....other than to tell the world, you really aren't missing much if you never go.

      @10MARC  8 місяців тому

      Your post was a combination of a nice and a rather negative review of AmiWest... Do these Australian monthly meetups still occur weekly with hundreds of attendees? I doubt it. That was probably 25 years ago, and things have changed just a bit.
      AmiWest is not a "Users Group Meeting", but a yearly celebration of Amiga that is hosted by a Users Group.

    Tell me honestly was that 10 Min Atari thingamabob the Best in Show? I have only seen one Atari ST ever being used by a friend who ran his BBS with one. Didn't give it much though at the time but everytime I see an ST I think of that moment. One of these days I will have to get out and visit a show.

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  8 місяців тому

      The line Atari ST that made it to the show honestly failed after about an hour. I was lucky to get that shot of it before the power supply failed.
      They are fine machines. Much better than PC's and early Mac's, but always a few steps behind.
