I’m glad I decided to do some research on docks before I decided to give up and buy the ROG licensed one. Going to do some testing of my own on the dock I bought so i don’t have to return it. Thanks for this video. Subbed
You are appreciated. 🙏
If it’s the power brick “dock” I would of just returned it
Subscribed! You’re awesome!! Cheers.
thanks you just saved me a lot of money, was wondering if that 30W was really that different from 25W
The 'dock' does 4k60 because of HDMI 2.0. Other docks let ally drive 4k120
thanks. this was useful.
Thanks so much for this video. Do you know of any docks for the ally that has usb-c dp alt mode?. I need it for my xreal AR glasses.
No docks ... but this works: Nubia RedMagic Adapter.
I know this is old but I bought the Anker 7-1 dock because I want to be able to hook my phone up to the ally to tether the internet and charge at the same time so I can play online games if I wanted . Do you think this will be fine or will I still struggle to charge it because it will use more power then it can charge ?
This is the only "dock" i found which has long usbc cable, so I can relax on couch while having wired connection (USB network adapter) to my gaming rig, so I can stream games from my gaming rig without hitches. So I guess I'm the one with a use case for it.
Liked the video great work, I bought the official "dock" on a promo down here in AU, couldn't resist it. Would you mind sharing the power meter you are using? I would like to bench myself my "dock" and a few other things. Cheers!
I can't believe I didn't include a link to it in the description. Grrr... amzn.to/3TuwaEK
there was no thought into making this ROG adapter. you can't call it a docking station when you can't even dock it with the Ally and just 1 USB adapter makes it even more insulting. at least with the 3rd parties there's more adapters to get the best out of using the ally
I know this is 8 months old. I use the Asus charger dock. I use the HDMI to my monitor. I have a keyboard and mouse. ASUS ROG Harpe and ASUS ROG Strix Scope II 96. It connects with that new Onmi connection. So only 1 dongle.
After so tests, which of the docks are the best to use for 'out of the box' to achieve 30w when it is docked? Official Ally's dock plus USB Hub/extender( so you can plug your mouse, keyboard and external HDD). Is this the best solution?
Probably, if you can stomach the configuration.
@@Darkuni What do you mean? You only need to add a USB hub and the rest will work fine.
@@gamingoninteluhdgraphics6296 I don't like the placement. I don't like have the ports "against the wall".
@@Darkuni In this case, after testing so many of them, which one would you recommend/is the best choice(all of them need an additional charger as well, right) ?
Heck yeah man good Video. It’s a shame asus calls that a dock though lol. I guess I’ll prob buy one but I’m waiting to see if another company can make a dock dock. You know those things that let you dock it lol 😂 I want the power of the ally dock in a normal dock format
In the PC world, which this product belongs to, it's the correct term. Docks today aren't like the old docks that you plonked your PC down on top of. Today, docks are an external box with lots of IO on it, and a single USB-C cable running to the PC.
So confused as new with all this...as I don't want a keyboard mouse. Is it possible to jsut buy a jsaux dock. Without the 100w charger. And jsut play some AAA games on big screen? With the charger supplied while it's at 25w?
Or no matter what you have to buy 100w charger and cable??
As you see from the video - the docks scrape some wattage from the original power supply. So the 65w supply that comes with the Ally is now more like a 55w power supply once you power a dock and the Ally together. You can also see that the performance of the Ally isn't impeded by this. However, you will NOT get 30w Turbo Mode badge showing up. Without that, the Ally will not allow you to chose 30w in a power profile - only 25w. Which means if you want any sort of manual profile? You will be gimped down to 25w (for real) vs 30w you're ACTUALLY getting with the dock - despite there being no badge to tell you you're getting it. It is assumed (and I believe acknowledged by Asus) that this is a UI bug. We have to wait for them to fix it. Just buy a Bambluby $20 dock and call it a day. If you don't understand what's going on, then you probably don't care - which is great!
Well I just tried a JSAux dock from Amazon and it wasn't good. I could notice screen tearing on games and big box \ launch box was laggy AF. So I'm going to get the official charger and see if that extra 5w can make it perform properly attached to a TV.
Yeah man, get back to us and let us know how it went.
Hp thunderbolt docking would that be a good idee
Hi!
Just a few quick questions
What boost frequency does the CPU in the Ally boost up to? Can it be overclocked, an if so how is the BIOS with overclocking and general adjustments?
Thanks :) Sorry for so many questions
😅
Sorry I'm not an overclocker. I'm one of those cautious people that don't want to burn up their $700 toy lol
@@Darkuni Ahh ok thank you! :)
Would you overclock an laptop?
Of course not! The reason is Thermals.
@@ytmaxxammo8591 The ROG ALLY isnt a laptop. But yh get what you mean. Unless you want to go psycho and do a liquid metal mod!
@@aztech5191 ahahaha yeah that would be insane. I mean it could be done by taking the back off and having the device docked. Then attaching an external cooler of some sort.
I guess anything is possible with a strong will and desire to see it through.
Even though the ally isn’t technically a laptop, after disassembly and examination of the internal components it’s very similar and somewhat a laptop with a different shell.
The guts are almost the same.
Rog ally on valve steam deck docking station, plug in a 100w PD charger, does the dock output more than 45w for the ally if the ally demands more than 45w?
Depends on the dock's ratings of course. And the docks themselves consume power (5-15w variable). The answer is .. it "should" but that is a case by case basis.
@@Darkuni thanks for the reply. Saw ur post/reply in a reddit 1 year ago. Regarding testing of how many watts does the steam deck official dock output without any deck connected. Any official news?
Thanks for the video! There seems to be another issue with this “dock” that doesn’t seem to have been reported online anywhere. I purchased the ROG Ally Charger Dock (before watching this) to plug the elite series 2 controller into it. I also plugged my headset with a TRRS 3.5 directly into the controller. I can hear audio well, but my mic doesn’t work. I then unplugged my ally from power and connected my controller directly to the ally using usb c to usb c cable. Everything works with that method. I need to find a different dock other than ASUS’ that allows the mic to pass through or test it out with a Microsoft Bluetooth adapter. Any suggestions since this video 5mo later?
I sort of got out of the Ally game. Sold it and the dock. I was never really happy with it ergonomically (hated the analogs) and once Asus never delivered on an SD card fix? I just cut my losses. Hopefully someone else will drop in and offer you a suggestion. :(
@@Darkuni I hear ya. It isn’t perfect in any way and serves as a backup when traveling to my main PC. Thanks for the quick reply!
@@DarkuniWait, what? Asus fixed the SD issue. R7-9 units. I did an RMA. My unit runs cooler and the joysticks feel stiffer. They even put tape around the joysticks so they don't grind.
So those improvements will be in the Ally 2.
Its obvious they lock the 30W turbo to only show if using the Official charger, cause even other docks that have more power that the official onces, showing above 30W power from cable but the Armour Crete still shows 25W, but the monitoring shows it does goes above 30W. They need to remove that restriction limit...
It’s not locked. It’s just a visual bug basically. It’s dumb but, you aren’t limited to the asus one
Armoury crate*
@@BodofLegendI’m sure they’ll fix it in a update if more people complain about it
@@Mzz_401 they need to!!!! I mean ive seen some reviews of people going out of their way to find other chargers and docks just to find a walk around and then the whole time, it didnt matter in the long run
This is incorrect. I have a third party 65W power brick that makes it show 30 watt turbo. I also have a 140 watt power bank that does the same. I just doublechecked to make sure.
is the hdmi projection of asus rog gaming charger dock compatible with rog phone 6
I don't have data on that, but this "dock" wasn't designed FOR the Ally, apparently as it has been around for awhile. The packaging doesn't even call the Ally out. So this "dock" was PROBABLY for other products too. But please don't quote me on that.
Thanks
What's a dock for Legion Go. I only see this dock at Best Buy
Alas, my friend. The channel only has so much money. No budget for a Go at this time. Perhaps later on ...
Do you lose 30watts turbo if you plugin keyboard, mouse and monitor?
No.
will plugging in a monitor, mouse and keyboard affect the benchmark and power coming into the ally
presumably ... to some extent.
Hi, the cable can be a substitute to the cable of the rog.phone 6 Charger?
I really don't know. I don't have that phone. But it's power delivery my friend. If the numbers line up? It'll do the job
good find! I find it hilarious we have difficulty calling it a "dock". My eyes see 'power brick', with a single USB 2.0 port, so that's what my brain wants to call it (a frickin' power brick!), which is why it always takes my brain a second to "correct" itself. Man, the cognitive dissonance is real with this one 😂
I can't even give them a pass on the concept of it being a docking "station" which doesn't often prop something up but you still click your laptop or tablet into something as a dock. I don't know what they were thinking here.
I read everywhere in the last few hours something that you need to have a 100w charger if you wanna use another dock from any other off brand because otherwise turbo mode will not work at all. Is that really the case...?
This is what I've read as well. I have found, though, that even with a 100w charger and 100w cables, the Ally still isn't kicking into 30w Turbo. So it seems to ALSO be "Dock Specific" as well.
Use an official Asus 100w charger and it’ll hit turbo mode with any dock.
Will the Asus ally fit in the steam deck dock?
No. Not without a 3d printed adapter. I'll have a video on that soon.
Do Ally fit in the IINE Folding Dock?
It does. Very well.
Which dock support 120hz hdmi?? i have a protbale monitor 2k 120hz and i want to make it useable with my ally
Alas I have not conducted testing of that nature.
Still searching bro. Jsaux sold out of the 120hz
hi i wanted to ask some questions, i play my ally almost all time only at 15W manual mode,
--i have a spare 45W 18000mah power bank, will that keep my ally runing at 15W mode whit no risk of damaging it?
--also i have a cheap dock i use for me switch which give 60W, and like i say i only want 15W mode, so same question i wont harm my ally can i use it safe?
-- and last when i go out i dont want to take my oficial charger because risk of loosing it, but i have a 45W samsung charger, so will that harm my system if i only play at 15W mode?
I understand the confusion. PD (or power delivery) is a global standard. I know, in the old days, you could blow something up using the wrong power supply. PD is PD - you can't HARM anything by interchanging PD chargers - because the standard is the same. You could provide "less than sufficient power" if you use say, a 15w PD power brick for a 45w required device. It just won't give you the necessary power. But if you plug a PD brick capable of 100W into 10W device? PD negotiates the power and only feeds it what it needs .. 10w. If it were opposite? The device would ask for 100W, the 10W PD charger would say "Here, have 10w .. it's all I got". Make sense?
@@Darkuni so pretty much if I use all these 45w stuff while playing at 15w I will only get slow charge but my ally should be fine, my sistem will only receive at max 45w, while in reality while playing at 15w it consumes like 25w and the rest 20 will go into battery charge
@@juliox9 pretty much
@@Darkuni thanks for the quick response
These are $29.99 at Best Buy. That’s not too bad for what you’re getting considering it’s an official product
After tax and tip, it was $70 when I bought it. I had to essentially give it away with the ROG when I sold it ... Sigh. Lots a LOT of money on that.
Mine doesn't even scores 13.000 with 30w charger only but 8860..why that ?how can be such a difference between your ally and mne?😢
Ah now i observed you have 720p i did the test at 1080 with all the other settings full...what about your other settings?thanks
I'm not sure. There are many things that can affect this. The power brick, the cable, settings, things running in the background ...
the delivery service 💀💀💀
For half price would you say the official dock is worth it?
So like, if the official dock was like .... $30?
@@Darkuni yeah it's been reduced from 60 to 30 in my local electronics store until the 15th
@@SephirothGenova It isn't that is doesn't "work", but the configuration is really weird and would only work (for me) in very small use cases. If the configuration doesn't bother you? It "does the job".
Does the steam deck dock hold the ally comfortably?
No. It really doesnt fit at all. Stay tuned though...
If i plug a hub in to the rog dock is still get 30w?
I assume it would depend on the power draw. I think YMMV.
most likely marketed for those who will travel out of state etc, to parents' house, you just plug to HDMI and pretend it's a PC ?
Right, but still, who has a power outlet on the top of a desk? All my power everywhere is routed behind stuff (my wife hates cords). Obviously in my test harness environment, I have power right there. But if my plug was on the floor ...?
@@Darkuni My guess is you plug on the floor, drop down the ROG Ally somewhere flat and "work" with monitor/keyboard... ?
@@megaxtra I guess...?
I can see it working w newer style desks that have outlets in the top, fairly common on newer produced standing/gaming desks.
@@michaelbrindley4363 seems a bit edge case, but yes I would buy that lol
Asus hub is absolutely useless unreasonably expensive.
I think so....
@@Darkuni just for hdmi 🤣 u will pay so much. Thats understandable
@@bishalscreation part of it has to do with the output wattage too I think. You can buy these exact same wall plugs with HDMI and everything for under $30. The question would be does it trigger the 30 watt turbo mode on the Ally? The answer is probably not. But it's pretty much a useless device in my opinion just the way it keeps everything centralized to the power plug
@@Darkuni i heard the bios update allows turbo charge from any other hubs rated 100w.
You really gotta let go of your definition of dock 😅
Apparently! Soon the brick that comes with your handheld and a piece of cardboard will be considered a dock .. oh wait...
That music was horrid
Thanks for the feedback. I was tired of EDM, chippy tunes and such ... Thought a little rock might be enjoyed.
Horrible choice of music while we're trying to focus on whats flashing on the screen. It's focus destroying music...and its loud asf in the headphones.
Try turning the volume down
