  • The highly-anticipated live-action remakes of one of the most classic Disney movies in history has arrived. The new adaptation of The Little Mermaid has graced the big screen, and Disney fans everywhere are eager to find out how this remake stacks up to the beloved original. Whether you love the new film or feel much more loyal to the animated version, everyone who’s seen this adaptation can agree on one thing: a lot changed between the animated version and now. Some live-action Disney remakes have been criticized for not actually changing much, at all, from their source material. With The Little Mermaid, however, this certainly wouldn’t be a valid criticism. It’s evident that director, Rob Marshall, set out to make many changes to the original story. A lot of backstory was added in this version for Prince Eric and Ursula, as well as more information about what happened to Ariel’s mother. Certain aspects of the original that garnered criticism were altered in the remake. For example, Ariel and Eric’s love story is more fleshed-out, and Ariel’s fascination with humans seems more important than her infatuation with Eric. Additionally, Ariel is much tougher this time around. From getting in fights to outsmarting opponents, and even taking down Ursula, this little mermaid isn’t afraid to defend herself. And, it’s clear that she’s interested in more than just marrying a prince; this version ends with Ariel and Eric setting sail to explore the ocean. We’ve got all the many changes this remake made to the source material.

      Executive summary: it sucked!
      Concerning the changes specifically-
      1. More love story:
      All right, I'm seeing more backstory for Eric here, which is nice; but more "love story" in particular? It's not there. In fact, there's *less* love story here; just not much chemistry between the two to be seen.
      2. Being human is more important than the Prince:
      This is precisely why there's less love story; the romance from the original animated feature was all but jettisoned to make way for the somewhat misandrist feminist BS about this mermaid being *yet another* "strong independent woman who don't need no man!" It's kinda funny how you didn't notice this glaring contradiction between your first two points.
      3. Auntie Ursula:
      I'd say this neither adds nor subtracts anything from the story. Something you neglected to note is that this was also part of an early script for the original animated feature (specifically brought up in a slightly longer version of the "Poor Unfortunate Souls" sequence) that got trimmed from the final draft-because it didn't really add or subtract anything from the story.
      4. Updated Poor Unfortunate Souls:
      This was a change for the worse. That entire verse that got cut to appease those killjoy feminist critics of the original was one of the best parts of the song! It establishes how manipulative Ursula truly is, as she tries to get Ariel to adopt a "sour grapes" attitude toward giving up her voice, knowing full well that voice would be the easiest way for Eric to recognize his mysterious rescuer with whom he was already more than a little infatuated.
      5. Changes to the soundtrack:
      Yeah, no. Eric's "Wild Uncharted Waters" was a pleasant but rather forgettable number, Ariel's "For The First Time" was annoyingly redundant exposition inconsistent with the rest of the narrative. (If we're going to hear her thoughts, than let us hear them throughout her time on land, not just in that one song.) As for that "Daughters of Triton" number, while I don't miss the song so much, the "family meeting" scene that replaced the original concert where they sang that song was poorly written rubbish. "The Scuttlebutt" was murder in the first degree to our ears, and whoever decided to add that atrocity should be fired and blacklisted from the entire movie industry, along with whichever ax murderer committed the felony of cutting Chef Louis and his hilariously macabre "Les Poissons" from this remake.
      6. Ariel's mom:
      This was a rather pointless change; the original explanation (killed by pirates, intentionally or not) was fine, and we didn't really need any further explanation for why Triton despises the land-dwellers so much.
      7. Ariel's sisters:
      Another pointless change; while Disney's stage-play musical adaptation of the original animated feature had already had Ariel's sisters be multi-racial for years, what *would* have been innovative and worth seeing was some explanation of how the merman and mermaid reproductive process yielded seven wildly genetically diverse daughters. (Even in the original animated feature, red-headed Athena and brown-haired Triton shouldn't have been able to have any blonde and black-headed daughters-unless they were passing eggs around to and from other mermaids and mermen, which might not be considered cheating in their underwater culture-and those daughters were actually Ariel's half-sisters.)
      8. Ursula's fate:
      Another change for the worse. In the original animated feature, Eric's saving Ariel from Ursula neatly bookends her having saved him from drowning (in a hurricane that it's broadly implied her father Triton might have whipped up due to being in a foul mood over his daughter's recent misbehavior) and helps establish why Triton might soften his attitude toward humans and be a little more accepting of having a new land-dwelling son-in-law. Here, thanks to the killjoy feminist writers' misandry (goddesses forbid a man should ever be allowed to rescue a "strong independent woman who don't need no man!"), that plot point is lost, Triton's change of heart makes less sense, and Eric is reduced to Ariel's arm candy.
      9. Tougher Ariel:
      As already explained, a definite change for the worse. The original Ariel's being a brash headstrong 16-year-old girl mutually infatuated with an also somewhat brash and headstrong 18-year-old Eric is a far bolder, more compelling, and more romantically appealing setup for a story than a "strong independent woman who don't need no man!" just kinda stumbling into a relationship with an otherwise useless royal dude in whom she's only vaguely interested.
      10. Changes to Scuttle:
      Another change for the worse. Original Scuttle is a funny guy always talking out his tail feathers because he's a know-nothing-know-it-all trying to impress Ariel with his "knowledge" of the land-dwellers. New Coke Scuttle is an annoying rapper girl doing a pale imitation of the original who's nowhere near so funny and entertaining.
      11. Eric's backstory:
      Some of it's an improvement, but most of it's just filler that makes it unnecessarily longer, and a little of it is more annoying feminist claptrap that makes it worse. Overall, that averages out to no change in the story's quality.
      12. New ending:
      A further slight change for the worse: it's rushed, it doesn't follow so naturally from the rest of the story as the original's ending did, and it's all done just as apathetically and lackadaisically as the rest of the movie.

    The changes were incredible! Eric was much more likable than the animated watching back he came off as ditzy and dense. Love how in the love action Ariel and Eric were able to have shared interest and their love story seemed more honest because he was genuinely interested in getting to know her and vice versa. 🧜🏽‍♀️ This is the best live action Disney has made yet sadly the last one being Jungle Book (2016) and 101 Dalmatians (1996)

    You left out one more difference between the 1989 Disney animated feature of "The Little Mermaid" and it's new live-action/CGI remake without Francesca Angelucci Capaldi as Ariel, Noah Schnapp as Prince Eric, Phyllis Smith as Ursula and Jamie Foxx as Sebastian the crab. In the original 1989 animated feature, when Ariel first noticed her new enchanted legs, she was still in the water and she lifted only one of her enchanted legs and wiggled the toes on one of her enchanted feet, which was one of the cutest images I've seen in Disney movies, but, in the new live-action remake, Ariel played by Halle Bailey (and not Francesca Angelucci Capaldi) first noticed her enchanted feet after she got caught in a fishing net and loaded onto a boat and she wiggled the toes on both feet.

    Hang on a second… WERE Eric and Ariel finally married in the live action version? I didn’t see a wedding ceremony…just a big send off as Eric and Ariel - in a fluffy, little girl-ish pink sundress, NOT a wedding gown - leave home to explore “the world up above.” The scene implied marriage (if you were looking for that), but left their nuptials open to question. Disney missed an opportunity to make the most of a happy ending.

      In the Live Action movie Ariel and Eric got engaged. They have not gotten married yet. On the animated version you have a 16 year-old mermaid marrying a man she meets after 3 days. How realistic is that? Is that a good message for young girls? I don't think so.

      Well, that relation was in an early draft of the original movie's script, though it didn't make it to the final cut. You can still detect some of those implications in Ursula's ramblings when she's complaining about how she used to enjoy all the feasting in Triton's palace back when she lived there and how she hates him for driving her out. (Why else would she be living there and be driven into exile if she weren't royalty-or at least nobility-herself, and how else would she be so highly ranked if she weren't some relation to the family?)

    The biggest difference is actually the "movie genre".
    The original animated movie is a fairy tale without a mentioned setting, but the new movie mentions real places and tries to be a bit more historical accurate, set in the Caribbean Sea (and that is why, our "Danish" Eric needs to have a certian backstory (; ).
    Carlotta and Louis are replaced through Lashana and Rosa.
    The whole movie is still with some funny scenes, but less slapstick. Not anymore Sebastian chased around by Louis (with Cancan music (; ). No anymore Sebastian distracting in Part of your world.
    No animals dressed up as humans in Tritons court. Not playing instruments. But real fish (;
    Triton also doesn't hate the humans because of "fish eating", but more because of destruction of the sea. And also prejudices from legends that mermaids are dangerous and luring.
    A very romantic and adventurous movie. Very good. Now the animated movie feels like a parody (;
