I am from the DR and i remember this tree.. it is a huge tree, maybe 30ft high. as i remember it, no one ate it fresh like that, they made deserts from it
Good video. I've subbed you now. Have seen you before and should have subbed earlier. Looks like an EXCELLENT fruit to grow. A must have for any good sized fruit forest. As for those Black Sapotes, I've been unlucky transplanting them. I had six grown from seed in small pots that rooted into the ground and got away on me. Clumped in too close together. So I pulled out five and re-potted and to my surprise every one died. I'm usually pretty good at transplanting but not that time. Cheers Bud. Best regards. 👍🙂
Here in Puerto Rico no one would get rid of an acerola tree to plant a mamey (mamea americana). That doesn't mean that you are wrong. Here, there is a well spread rumor about eating mamey and getting stomach pains. Bad press for the fruit.
I know there are a lot of these trees in PR my friend just got property there and there is one on the land. But yea the acerola is a nice snack but I want a more filling fruit for a meal
I've heard in Cuba this type of Mamey isn't used as a fresh fruit, but to make pies etc . I've seen a few trees in S. Florida, very dense canopy, I'd only plant one in a very large lot.
I think it's awesome that you move things around and still make it work. You have great ideas. I'm glad that people that are the ones that are negative. Don't have a clue what's going on. You have a great show telling the facts about tree's fruit. You have a wonderful day and God bless you and your family God bless America and the world God bless the children and keep them safe from harm.👍🙏🇺🇸
I grew up having Mamey shakes but the Mamey I’m familiar with is more oblong shaped and very dark pink inside with a black seed in the middle. I didn’t like eating it fresh but the shake is absolutely delicious
@@FruitfulTrees, yeah, that’s true! I’m so glad to see you guys are enjoying it, finally! 😊 You have to try the Guyana spice mango. It’s truly amazing..
They are very large tropical trees. Can be kept manageable with pruning. They do like a bit of sandy soil. They don’t require watering when established.
I got the same two trees going in next week!
One of my favorite fruits, so good, but huge tree.

Love these fruit, addicting! Got one a couple of feet tall. Aloha!
I bought one last year from Julian...
They take a while but they take off!
I would put a shade cloth just in case it get to hot!
Such an interesting looking fruit! Cool stuff.

In Cuba this fruit is called mamey Santo domingo and people don't care much about it

@@FruitfulTrees, those cherries are excellent for juicing. Eating as a meal, not so much! 😊
Another fruit tree abuse case in mangoland. 😨 🪦⚠️

Who comes with these names?....this tipe of Mameys are all over the Caribbean for decades.
Yes my friend who grew up there tells me that but not many people in Floria have one or know if it
We call it in Cuba mamey dominicano!!! Not Americana!!!

If real estate is critical why not develop the scaffolding and multigraft…😊😉🍻 Johno
working on the multi grafts, what do you mean by scaffolding
@@FruitfulTrees … 3-4 main support branches from main trunk keeping tree low and open for picking and air flow…
What variety was your Black Sapote and how many crops did you get? Being it's so young/small, the fruit could've gotten better with age.
I don't know the variety. I have a big black sapote somewhere else and my neighbor has a big one.
The best time to eat mamay Americana is when it falls from the tree. I don’t think they’re picked.
correct that's what I was told. Where are you from?
@@FruitfulTrees, I’m was born in Guyana, S.A, and grew up in Queens, NY.
@@SueLall1008 I was born in Queens NY lol, yes my friend from Guyana knows this fruit very well. He says they are all over Guyana

Have you decided to sell your black Sapote, I'd love to adopt it.
it was root bound so I had to get rid of it. I do not suggest growing black sapote. so many other better trees to grow
what time of year do these ripen?
now they are coming to the end
Should be able to prune those overgrown gnarly roots.
Nice Paul! How long before it produces fruit?
5 years i hear
50ft + tree, will shade everything out in the front yard. Tastes like Apricot that Paul had stated he doesn't care for.
@@greatergood3706 I love apricot s
What is their tolerance to sun, freezing, drought, etc? How large do the trees get?
they get large

Why wouldn’t you get the Jamaica variety? You loved that fruit when you did the taste test with your neighbor.
the Jamaica is Mamey Sapote. This is a different fruit
I'm gonna get ride of my yellow jaboticaba I hate the taste and there's no meat to it
