- This is an interview with the historical consultant for Shogun, Frederik Cryns! This interview was conducted by Antony Cummins, who asked if the footage of the interview could be uploaded here. There is a ton of awesome detail they get into which really shows the great lengths they went through to make sure the show was as historically accurate as possible!

Absolutely cool awesome interview. Being a dane, I can remember what motivated me to interested in Japan. 1. Shogun , 2. A open-air museum exhibition in Denmark about Japan and showed rooms per era and 3. a friend of the family she went to Japan to studying packaging. Yes that was enough for her to get her PHD. More than 30 years alter I now still have to visit Japan. I saved enough for the trip :-) Happy as if I was 15 again :-). Thanks for this video.

IKR! this interview just proved that most poeple dealing w/ period dramas or shows don't actually listen to their historical advisors and Shogun 2024 stands out cuz their showrunners and writers ACTUALLY did listen.
Despite Frederik Cryns' humility, you can really tell he's very passionate and extremely knowledgeable about the topic. I'm glad they got him as the historical consultant for the show!
So great to see shows embracing historical accuracy! If only more shows, movies and games would go to these lengths...

As a lifelong history need, It gives me the warm fuzzies to see youtubers jlining forces with historians to bring these amazing stories to the public.
Also, big kudos to the show runners for not being lazy and hiring (and listening to) real historians when reproducing historical events and periods.
So many do not, and the product suffers, and the history is misrepresented. So again, pats on the back all around. Let's make hiring a historical advisor step 1 whenever they look to put history on screen.

it is recorded in history that the woman who fought was Acha, one of Tokugawa Ieyasu's concubines.
She is one of the two models for 'Lady Kiri' in the TV series 'Shogun.'
She participated as one of Ieyasu's escort in the only battle between Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the 'Battle of Komaki and Nagakute.' It is said that she fought bravely equipped with a naginata and armor. Additionally, it is reported that she miscarried Ieyasu's child due to her participation in the battle. Acha also played a leading role in the negotiations during the Siege of Osaka, as depicted in this video. She was also present at the first meeting between William Adams and Ieyasu. In other words, she can be considered as the real-life counterpart of Mariko in the drama 'Shogun.'"
She’s more like an anti-Ochiba. Same levels of political skills but fought for the opposing sides. Ochiba is Lady Hideyoshi. Acha is Lady Ieyasu.

Very interesting, so glad you posted this. I am pleased that we have a current crop of showrunners and directors who will actually listen to the consultants; refreshing actually. As someone who has more than a passing interest in history it is good to know that this adaptation of Shogun did not lend itself to the usually Hollywood hysteria of “more bang for your buck”.

Whenever Tokugawa Ieyasu pops up in media
For Japanese audience: “Great, now we have another version of Ieyasu again this year. So boring.”
For American audience: “OMG! 😱 Who is this guy? He is Japanese Tywin Lannister.”
I introduced my friends at the Izakaya where I live in Aomori to the show. They are hooked. We watch religiously together.
Ieyasu is more of a stark in my eyes.
He does what needs to be done. But ultimately wanted the best for his people and the lands they lived on.
I think it's why so many got behind Oda even though he was ruthless. The smart people were probably aware of japan dosnt unify, they will fall to a foreign invader
@@410cultivar Ieyasu is definitely not a Stark. None of the great daimyos are. In actual history, honor fetish was reserved for retainers and common folk. The daimyo pretty much do what they want and betray you when it's beneficial to do so.

With all due respect to Professor Crynes there were a LOT more inputs into the accuracy of Shogun that was not mentioned in this interview. He mentions the Anglo producers with out a single mention of actor producer Hiroyuki Sanada who brought over from Japan an entire authenticity crew working in every department including Akiko Kobayashi Period Movement Advisor, Hiroo Minami Martial arts and stunts advisor and many many more.
Having worked in the Lighting Department for this show I think it would not only be a great disservice to Hero and the many great Japanese talents that brought the authenticity to this production in almost all departments to fail to mention or give credit to them but a great insult to the talent they brought to bear. One of those historical accuracies that was actually debated was that sea side towns black out practices with no light. Obviously, tv without light is Radio so.....
While I'm sure it was unintentional, this interview came off a bit Anglo-centric.

I really enjoyed the conversation between Frederik Cryns and Antony Cummins. The historical details elevate this production to a higher level. I also liked that they discussed the realities of making a TV show entertaining, and sometimes to get a photogenic shots, historical accuracy has to be sacrificed. Thanks to you for making this available for viewing and thanks to Antony for allowing it to be shared.
The producers did a good job actually listening to historians and followed recommendations on detail. One reason why the show is so good

Yeah, late Sengoku period vs. late Edo period is like, for Americans, the first small Roanoke settlement in North America vs. the events of the Civil War.
You can see the man really does what he loves, the producers were right to get him and overrall they done a great on the show...

I love the detailed description of why certain compromises were made , where things were romanticized in different areas, and why those romanticized versions were kept. Excellent.

I would hope this show receives plenty of awards. it has been greato see something truthful and so far it has avoided the short term tick box woke approach, that has practically destroyed disney and many others. Well done to all on this show. especially Anna for her amazing performance so far. she has been the stand out person in the show.

Amazing Interview, I love that most of the Show is in Japanese, as Mexico American I'm more used to read subtitles, but I have some Anglomerican friends that just cannot bear the show because they have to read subs...

I really like the show so far! Does anybody know if the media outlets that reviewed the show when it came out got to see all the episodes beforehand? If so that is a really good sign these last episodes will be epic since the show got great reviews!
There is one drawback to the heavy publicity about how historicly accurate the show is. That is that many viewers, especially younger ones, will think the events are basically true. They will hear that the main characters are based on actual people and not realize that the real person Blackthorn portrays never met the real Mariko character or that the real Blackthorn character wasn't even around the action after about the second episode. In an ironic twist, the pursuit of historical accuracy in one direction actually distorts the perception of actual historical events to many people.
Always the shotgun style concept with any spreading the word, hit as much in as wide a range as you can. Somehow, Anthony's reviews ducked my feed but your video here didn't which is strange because I tend to end up dovetailing you two in a small playlist for doing dishes and the like 🤷♂️
Just might be extra wise these days with the algorithm(s) reining over things, so whomever in your circle of people might have something pinging it'll help all of you like the community of the sword or shield. Been a long one, and I can't recall 🤦♂️
Have enjoyed your story format for long while and these are beyond a welcome addition to the fold 🫡
An interesting interview I enjoyed it nice to know some interesting facts especially that the women were the ones who did the negotiations at Osaka that was certainly a surprise to me great interview overall.

If there's anything this interview proved, it's that you can tell a period drama or series is authentic when their producers, showrunners, & writers actually listen to their historical & cultrual consultants as stated in 16:53 & 10:47 .
We need more of this against Hollywood!
I'm very interested to hear more how Sengoku period was different from how it is viewed through the Edo romanticized lens.
Would it be successful if SHOGUN were produced as a prequel from the tiger chief's point of view?

Also 18:11 shout out to my Sengoku queen, Lady Acha no Tsubone. Out of all his wives and concubines, Acha seems to be a perfect match for Ieyasu because she could fight and she’s very politically savvy.
The best part is that she’s Ieyasu’s lover who got into the most danger but somehow outlived Ieyasu for 21 years (and also outlived Hidetada for 5 years). Meanwhile, the stay-in-the-castle wives of Ieyasu like Lady Tsukiyama (killed by Ieyasu under Nobunaga’s order), Lady Saigo (died mysteriously, probably by poisoning) or Lady Asahi no Kata (died from chronic disease) all met their untimely deaths.
I'm surprised that the Critical drinker actually likes this show. He flip flops when it comes to STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS 💪
I do think they do go a little overboard with making every female character look smart and strong while most of the Japanese men are simple brutes.
I see the historian has a new book out about William Adams. I think his true story is actually more interesting than Shogun is. I bet the book will be excellent.
I think the Last Samurai was inexcusably appalling. This puts it to shame.

So far the only sex between Mariko and Blackthorn has been when she thought Buntaro was dead. Do you think this historian with his knowledge of the real character's strong Catholic beliefs, had any input into this? (Although, her knowledge of Blackthorn being married would still make it a sin.)

Why do they use fake names
Because they’re not taking directly from history. They’re changing things up and adding drama. It avoids creating false misconceptions of the history and instead gets people to go look up who’s based on who which means more people who actually learn something and find entertainment. Something I think is actually missing from most “historical” movies. It makes you realize you’re being mythologized to, without the propaganda of actually believing everything you see happening in the show is how it happened in real life. Especially since it’s written by a British guy originally during a time when Britain was coming to terms with how colonialism was actually a bad thing (this era of film happens right after the civil rights movement in America too)
And because during the time when it was written, the world was still dealing with the martial arts “Japanese” craze that had just hit the west. It’s as a story, a response to a lot of those really racist and silly movies from that era.
It’s a sign of respect for the culture it comes from instead of a white guy just rewriting his own interpretation of the history of Japan.

The original Shogun was only 'inspired' by real world events it was never a retelling of an actual historical event it was just events that happened in history that they loosely adapted together.
All the new Shogun improved was historical visuals like dress, architecture etc.

oh, theres been a few complaints. from lunatics asking why there arent a bunch of black people in the show. the show about japan... which considering its a netflix show im surprised they werent shoved in there like most every other show. a+ to whoever helped stop that nonsense and make an actual, historical period drama instead of forcing woketarded nonsense into it. the result is a show thats one of the best over the last several years.
Its not a Netflix show. It was done by FX and Hulu.
