It’s so weird how Sony has abandoned a lot of their older IPs. They have a lot of really cool games that are sadly on ice or in the graveyard. If they’d release MCC style collections with remastered and old graphics you could switch between that could bring in some new people, and allow older fans to play the games they liked on newer hardware with quality of life improvements, better performance, and have multiplayer. Or they could do Dead Space/Resident Evil style remakes that keep the games mostly faithful while also having soft retcons to make connections where none previously existed and have the older titles tie in with newer lore, use the best aspects of gameplay to enhance the experience, upgrade the ai, fix up parts of the level design that didn’t work, and improve the overall presentation. Hopefully either or both of those would revitalize those franchises. It’s pretty weird they aren’t doing that since they’ve made several remasters of Last of Us despite the fact that game isn’t that old.
From what I’ve heard there was a forth game pitched, but Sony rejected it because it had too many similarities to Last of Us and they didn’t want to saturate the market with what they saw as too many games with the same premise. Hopefully with Microsoft becoming Megahard after boring Activision Blizzard they’ll step up their game and start bring back their older games. There’s still a lot of room for Killzone, Resistance, and some of their other shooters to keep growing.
I think the weirdest thing about Resistance is how they kept changing up the gameplay with each entry. Games naturally change overtime as the devs refine the gameplay, innovate, and have some degree of experimentation. But, Resistance went from a weapon wheel in the first game with partially regeneration health to the two weapon limit and full regeneration health, back to the weapon wheel and the return of health packs (I’m sure I’d probably enjoy the third game the most since it has a lot of similarities to Half-Life 2 and that game was fun). Games should evolve as time goes on, but the way the fact they couldn’t fully commit to one style definitely hampered its growth. Hopefully if we get a new game it uses the best aspects of all titles to create something really good.

Dude I couldn’t agree more. Sony had so many fucking great titles during the ps2&3 era. After that they somehow did not manage to create the same feeling when playing a game. Maybe cuz its of us getting older. Maybe cuz technology progressed and the way games are made is different. But the atmosphere of older games cannot be recreated, there is just something about those games!
I also feel like Sony was relatively "new" back then and tried to do different shit. Whereas now they know (more or less) what works with the current main demographic. Attending to those players will make the most cash for the company.

Warp to now and we know from the Insomniac leaks that sadly nothing Resistance related is in the works, there’s only one Ratchet and Clank game slated for the future, Sunset Overdrive 2 was cancelled, and most of their upcoming games are different Marvel ones. It’s sad that the studio that used to make a lot of original stuff was repurposed to do almost exclusively Marvel stuff. From what I’ve heard their Spiderman game is really good, but they can’t do as much when confined to someone else’s ip.
I remember I was talking to someone about why there’s not many remakes or enhanced ports for a lot of old games and we went down this rabbit hole about the various contributing factors preventing that from happening. A lot of the studios (first and third party) have simply moved on and no longer have any interest to go back (the lead guy working on Legend of Zelda said that in an interview talking about where they’re going to take the Zelda series). Copyright issues with licensing and multiple groups owning the ips contribute to this. The markets have changed to the point where most people sadly aren’t interested in a lot of the older games and the INSANE time and resources needed to make games simply isn’t worth bringing back older titles. As well as the fact that like modern Insomniac their higher ups (Sony in this case) have them working on other things (we also know they cancelled the forth Resistance because the pitch was too similar to Last of Us). There’s so many old games that are sadly locked to hardware that’s no longer in circulation. Let’s hope that with companies like Nightdive Studios remastering old titles other companies will do the same. It would also be good if with the runaway success of Helldivers 2 on pc they’ll bring more old and new games to pc (or at least just make the PS5 backwards compatible like the Series X is). That way they can be preserved and made more accessible. Along with bringing enhanced ports to newer consoles.
Also, from what I’ve heard there was supposed to be a Resistance movie at some point, but it fell through. This is probably for the best because I’m sure it would’ve sucked since when it comes to movies Sony’s track record is awful (Emoji Movie, Morbius, Madame Web, and that Slenderman movie made however many years after the creepypasta was no longer relevant come to mind😂) with genuinely good things like Spiderverse being outliers, and video game adaptations in general are bad. I’m sure it would’ve been better than the Halo show, but that’s not exactly hard to do since the Halo adaptation is so atrociously bad. Even if the movie wouldn’t be good it’s still really interesting to think about how it could’ve turned out. I hope that someday the script and pictures of the sets, props, and the designs used for the Chimera leak so we can at least get a brief glimpse into what could’ve been.
Even though the fourth game never made it past the pitch phase and one of Insomniac’s lead guys said they finished the story they wanted to tell, and it sadly never truly caught on likely due to the gameplay lacking a cohesive foundation I still think there’s plenty of room for spinoffs and prequels leading up to that point. From what I’ve seen of the two PsP/Vita games it looks like they could’ve done some interesting things with slightly different formulas. I’d LOVE to see an Xcom style game and/or an rts where it’s humans vs Chimera. Gears Tactics managed to translate Gears of War into a fairly decent Xcom type game. Unfortunately, despite the fact it was really fun the game has some drawbacks when it comes to the story/lore causing problems, there’s no multiplayer, mod support and a map editor aren’t part of the pc version (too bad we’re long past the days when tools that allow for user generated content are no longer seen as an essential set of features), and after beating the game there’s not much of a point in replaying it. Halo Wars 1/2 were a lot of fun and translated various Halo elements into an rts. They work well for an introductory title if you’re new to rts games and work well on a controller. Sadly, since they were both designed for the controller they couldn’t go all out with different controls, micromanaging a wide array of units in different groups, and base building needed to be dumbed down. It would be really interesting to see what a reimaging of Halo Wars designed specifically for keyboard and mouse would look like. I’d also LOVE to see a Resistance horror game where the Chimera are portrayed these horrific monsters you have to avoid most of the game. What kind of spinoffs/side stories would you want to see?

I called Resistance my main handheld shooter in high school (Gears of War was my main console shooter). I played the main games years later and loved them. I hope for something in the future.

So you had the best of two worlds so to speak, haha. Heard a lot of good things about gears of war but I only have the first og Xbox :(

@@Kamurjan so I can only speak from personal experience, but the OG game is my all time favorite game and is part of the reason why I'm as passionate about gritty scifi shooters as I am lol. Resistance Retribution felt like pocket gears of war (despite lacking the fun movement tech in Gears) so if you like Resistance Retribution, I'd HIGHLY recommend Gears of War. If you get gamepass, you could cloud stream the games.

@5hane9ro honestly, the gritty and kinda edgy artstyle of the older games ( Ratchet & Clank 1-3, Jak and Daxter 2-3, or even fucking whiplash xd) was peak gaming era. Even the cartoons back then were in this artstyle lol.
I could ask a friend of mine to borrow his Xbox, maybe I'll get to play it this way.
