LOVE what you said about "protected time". Dated someone during pre-med who was also pre-med, and it seemed like we spent a lot of time together, but in hindsight it was just studying... being proactive about making time is so important.

Commenting as a non-medicine individual dating a second year IM resident. I wouldn't say that the largest challenge is the "lack of understanding" more so as it is, the feeling of isolation that can come with dating someone who is always busy and tired. BUT I will say this, I am so proud of him every single day. And for the time that we do get to spend together, it's always so special. We make moments count and that's what matters. My advice to the non-medicine partner is to focus on your professional career as well and things that make you happy outside of the relationship. If they are someone worth dating, your support will never be taken for granted.

I've initially tried to avoid dating med students for very similar reasons to the ones you listed out. But then I met and started seeing this guy who turned out to also be a Med student (he's a senior and I'm a junior). Ironically, we both hid the fact we were medics on the dating app, so we still laugh a bit about that to this day. Both of us got very different side passions, but we are also very ambitiously driven and having Med did strengthen our bond in my case. We can never talk enough about Med, but we also talk about techs/politics/music/philosophy/etc. We love to mix pleasure with work and we only physically see each other once every 3 weeks so far due to being at distance and very busy, but we video call almost every day and text each other often to check-in. It can work as long as both people are willing! We do what we can, we support each other and we make the most out of everything. This is only my personal experience though :)

Hey but tell me one thing, how it's possible to get attached with someone through an app? I mean romantically. like as i know, love is not the thing which u can find online. It needs the presence of that person , interactions, sometimes moments..... like how it's possible bro to do so through an app. Correct me if I'm wrong

  • @joysudan8668

My boyfriend and I are in the same class and it’s been a year now :) I would not say that you should not talk about medicine because it’s your common passion. What is the most important is to communicate and tell your partner when it’s too much for you. Some protected time together is definitly a good thing. And the biggest challenge is to avoid competition.

The thing is I am very competitive, so if I date someone in Med school I will feel either inferior or superior when comparing marks and I HATE THAT! Been dating a guy since 6 years who is in banking and its amazingggggg because I respect his field as I hve no idea about it and i feel no competition. He is just as busy as I am in med school so it works out! Basically if you have 1) understanding 2) loyalty 3) trust 4) love for each other- it's gonna work out! It was def easier for me because I was already with him from my undergrad prior to entering medical school so we already had our base set!

I attend Kent State University, which has a College of Podiatric Medicine, which is one of my back up plans if I don’t get into allopathic medical school. Most doctors especially young doctors are broke doctors after they finish med school. So to hook up with a doctor with $300,000 of school debt is not a winner. However if you find out that his parents has paid for his entire education then it’s a winning prospect but that is maybe 4% of doctors. Most people think oh my god you’re a doctor you must be really established and actually like I said before most young doctors are broke on their ass and have sacrificed many years of living on a budget or delayed self gratification until they get out of school. Then a large percentage of them go way into debt new car new house new lifestyle everything and then they’re living well beyond their means this is the curse of delayed gratification through the years in college.

True about most young doctors not being financially secure at that point in their career. However, there's much more to a happy and successful relationship than just finances.

True, however in the long run it pays off. If they’re not wanting to be with you long enough till you’re financially stable, what is the point? If you’re a well meaning person who isn’t crazy possessive, hooking up (in the relationship sense) is definitely a winner. Results may vary based on the actual quality of the physician.

I’m gonna get so much hate for this comment but if you’re a female physician whose NOT type A (on a scale of Med students, at least) chill etc- I would strongly recommend you consider dating another physician over someone outside of medicine. I have done both and man there is no comparison. Chill/ non gunner female Med students are still people pleasers etc and making a guy outside of medicine understand your schedule is so painful - and chill girls have such a hard time advocating for themselves - I have seen it time and time again amongst my peers! If you’re a type A gunner - either is fine, you will make it work LOL. I have seen this time and time again !

Dr. Jubbal, so when did you friends and collauges have children in medical school and residency? As in what year in med school and what year in residency. BTW, this may or may not be appropriate but I'm going to say it anyway: You have such a beautiful smile! :)

I’m really anxious about getting into a relationship with a guy who is working to be a surgeon and I’m outside the field doing Food Science. I’m anxious because I’m big on quality time and obviously I’m very flexible but I know he’ll be busy all the time. Typically I don’t see my friends all the time or I’ll see them once a week and in my mind I would like to Integrate that type of time spent together in the budding relationship for example scheduling some time together but it’s really hard because he doesn’t really have a work schedule in his lab, they just call him in and that’s it. Idk I’m just scared. He’s literally the sweetest guy I’ve romantically talked to ever. He has so much respect for me and literally treats me like a queen. I think it seems like he wants to spend too much time taking care of me so I like to remind him to take so time for himself too. I genuinely want to get to know him better and potentially get into a long term relationship with him but I’m scared. I don’t want to feel abandoned and I know that’s the last thing he would ever want me to feel. Idk any kind words or words of motivation is welcomed. I have faith everything is going to be ok but I’m still anxious about it. Thanks to those who chose to read or comment. Much appreciated ❤️

A surgeon is going to be VERY busy and not easy to have a family with. Without a doubt you will have to compromise. Try to talk about it with him. How does he see his future with a family? Will he try to put family first? Does he have a live to work mentality? How much can he compromise with you? The way you describe him he seems nice. Wait your comment was 6 months ago lol you still see him?

@@minimo3634 no sadly. We tried talking it out and he does see himself having kid but he was god awful at communicating or even having a basic conversation with me. He would ask me how I was doing then I would reply and ask the same and then he wouldn’t reply back until I said something about his lack of communication. It just felt like talking to a wall at that point
