      @@ines4982 I'm also 17. I doubt myself way too often. Medicine might not be for me, but i literally can't see myself doing anything else. Who knows? Maybe we're wrong about being so stressed out. For me, that fear is caused more by my low self-esteem than my actual abilities and knowledge, i don't know if you're experiencing a similar thing or not. I root for you regardless of what your future choise in career is and i trust your decision and gut feeling. As for me, i'm far too determined to stop now, regardless of being anxious, so i'll go for it and won't regret it even if i fail since i would at least get to try. I have my own reasons to want to keep going down this road and pros outweight the cons when it comes to my wishes and personality. I can understand if you don't feel the same or don't have as good of a financial support as i do that would allow you to experiment with your future more and make mistakes along the way far easier. Regardless of anything, this may sound cheesy, but i believe in you. You know yourself the best and you're gonna be amazing at your job regardless of what you become.

    It’s not overhyped as much as the public perception is being downgraded by other mid levels who are wanting to equate their degrees as equal to physicians and want independent practice . It’s so frequent now to see NPs and PAs all walking around with white coats starting their “doctors” (of nursing or doctor of PA lol) to patients in hospitals. So many states due to the lobby efforts of the nursing organizations have passed bills to allow them to work without supervision. When anyone with such little experience can work on their own , why is it that medical students that become doctors still have to go through residency to even practice medicine at all. Residency is much needed because as physicians we understand the importance of the learning done in residency, but to see everyday NPs and PAs acting and promoting themselves as doctors while simultaneously seeing the physician profession put under bad light due to “greed or know it all’s” really makes me question what medicine will be like when I become an attending as I am a 4th year Med student right now . Good video tho!

    • @aleksap5459
      @aleksap5459 4 роки тому +20

      Syed I find that really fascinating; in Australia we don’t have PAs to my knowledge and what NPs we do have are very few in number and very, very experienced and senior in their field, so nobody else can really compare to doctors here. There has been some stir to allow nurses an increased scope of practice (like perform colonoscopies) mainly to relieve some burden on waiting lists, which the Australian Medical Association is generally strongly against; as a nurse applying for med I have very mixed opinions in the matter lol! I don’t think that anyone could come even close to matching the knowledge, training and ultimately authority that doctors have here any time soon, and honestly I don’t think that should change. I’m so used to this culture, that I find your experiences so interesting; the way cases are managed where you are and by who must be a lot more nuanced!

      Hey, Cara! I was on the same boat as you not too long ago. I was torn between law and medicine. One day, I was doing some research online and came across an article that instantly made me choose medicine-so Gad I did.
      The article was written by a physician reflecting on his life as an ER doc. He talked about how no other job is like being a physician. He said that's the closet you can get to another human without having to know them personally at all, having the skill set to change or save a grateful life is rewarding . He ended by asking , "70 years from now, will you look back and regret not going medical to school?" That sealed the deal for me. I hope this helps.

However, lately and after watching this, I don't regret it too much because unlike those 20 yr olds I gained real life experience and got to start saving money while pursuing a different career path. My ambition to become a doctor has never once left my mind, I knew I always wanted to get into this profession but now I'm glad it will be later in my life(30s). I'm more financially stable than those that go straight into med school after college and I know how to tackle the stresses that come from schooling (thanks law school). I’m 24 and by the time I’ll probably get into med school I’ll be 26, but that isn’t stopping me somehow from pursuing what I always believed was my life’s mission. At times I’m really scared because I’ll be done with my post graduate training in my late 30s but then I tell myself, what would I be doing otherwise? Boring paper work? Reading dry and completely mundane statutes? Medicine never really left my heart. I hope I make it.

For the longest time I wanted to be a Psychiatrist but started to doubt and this whole COVID 19 blew many of those dreams away for me. But regardless of that it still tears at me knowing I want to help others. I love learning about mental health and for the past 6 years being a nursing assistant at the VA I've been exposed to many disorders and other mental illnesses. So I'm torn which would be more beneficial, status for sure becoming a physician is there but I had a reminder from someone telling me becoming a physician shouldn't be the only reason to define my life in order to be successful. I learned and thought about it for a while. And they were right. We can help people in many ways and still get the benefit of helping others without a title behind our names. What exactly are people actually passionate about in medicine? I get helping people, but there’s not a lot of self-expression and creativity. • @AliYeah93
    @AliYeah93 4 роки тому +4

    There is no such thing as reward without hard work. Medicine has a lot of positives to outweigh the cons talked about in this video.
    1. You spend your life helping people in a way nurses etc do not. Life is short, and to spend a life in this way is a noble endeavour.
    2. People will always need a doctor, therefore there will always be a job out there. May not be in the specialty or region you want, but you will never be unemployed. Most people can only dream of saying that.
    3. Recession-proof, pandemic-proof.
    4. Intellectually stimulating. Always changing.
    5. Salary is comfortable. You will NOT be filthy rich as a doctor. But you will be comfortable. Able to afford some luxuries. Live in a nice house. Go on holiday. Not be in debt forever. Afford a comfy retirement. Again, things most people can only dream of.
    These advantages don't come for free. They come at a cost. Tuition fees, opportunity cost, nights slaving away in your early years. Whether all of that is worth the advantages is something you have to individually answer.

Think about when you are old and retired, breathing your last breaths, reflecting on your life. My interest in medicine lies more in the foundational science rather than the daily practice of being a physician, which involves substantive patient contact in most cases. As such, I'm pursuing education in an MLS degree program, where patient contact is a lower proportion of the daily workload. Dealing with patients can be taxing, especially in the current anti-vaccination, pseudo-intellectual conspiracy climate. I don't think I'd consider medical school unless I'm confident that I have a good shot at, and strong interest in, something like pathology.
