    You definitely hit the mark Shaun. I’ve built a bunch of different bamboo flutes-side blown, end blown, NAF , panpipes, but just recently have received a bag full of flutes from Fantasy Flutes by DAS. Some of his smaller side blown flutes have the oval blow hole and are much easier to play. I’m going to make a burning rod that is oval in shape and see how it works. Thanks for your video.

    I'm just learning to make flutes in order to use up a bunch of leftover PVC piping.
    This video revolutionized my efforts!
    No more ney and shakuhachi- I'm going square notch end-blown and square-hole side-blown!
    A little googling tells me that flute embouchures have varied historically back and forth from large and square, to small and round; with the former giving better bass response, and the latter better treble!
    I'd hazard a guess that the longer flatter edge is easier for a beginner like me to blow on too- this was the easiest flute to play I've made yet!

    Thank you! I’m working on a bamboo flute of my own, and wasn’t sure how to cut the sound hole. I’m glad I came across your video! Now I know what to do!

    This helps so much. I've made a native American type flute a few years ago and now attempting a transverse bamboo flute (inspired by Bill from kill bills flute 😂) I was wondering how the transverse flute sound hole worked and found this video. Thank you so much and I'll let you know how it turns out. I appreciate you 👏❤

    So, the edge is flat and perpendicular to the cylinder’s walls, or flat and tapered to an edge?

    Man you are a genius! I also spent an hour and half trying to make it nice but this just makes perfect sense. You are hitting the back edge to get the air to vibrate the whole thing to make the sound! like the sharp air track on a NAF. Thanks to you, I might have my 4th flute out of the bamboo pole I also got for nothing XD. Thanks! I also think I made the hole too big... used a round 1cm hole.

    Is the bamboo flute the same fingerings as the baroque flute?

    • @shaunhayward
      @shaunhayward  Рік тому +2

      It all depends on your finger holes. You could make them baroque, or any diatonic mode, or any pentatonic mode, or anything else you can imagine.

    Is this the same as a fife

    • @shaunhayward
      @shaunhayward  7 місяців тому

      It's in the same family as a fife. Fifes tend to be smaller and higher pitched.

    Thank you! Thats such a nice deeper sound!! Im vegan and zero waste and all instruments seem to contain some kind of horrible component like bone, guts or hair, but also things like wood polish or lubricants with animal products in them. I have FINALLY found a very nice sounding vegan zero waste diy instrument and im so happy. Thanks for the tip that will make it sound better than just a penny whistle ❤
