I was taught in yoga to flatten my back to the ground so I don't build my abs out. Aka so I don't look pregnant. I've been doing it like this for 15 years this is my favorite core. I've never had back pain. And my core is strong. I do it like he says not to.
@@zaharafreeman4694I think it's for when one has lower back pain, to not flatten against the floor. Else I also flatten normally, as this involves the abs more (for me).
@monkemode8128 because tendons or muscles getting janked over bone would have to take a toll on the muscle or tendon in question. My last 1 rm on deadlift was 440 and my best squat to date is 365. Those movements don't target the hip flexor
I just wanted to write this... i avoid all these types of movements that involves laying down and doing a full leg motion. Doesnt hurt just makes noises so idk if its good for me😅

I watched this again today and I realized I forgot about the brace part. I don't think I've ever heard ANYONE mention this when going over the form. I'm truly grateful for the fact that you are sensitive to every level of discomfort that can take place while giving this a try. When you are in pain it is difficult building up the confidence you usually get when "everything is okay" and you're sticking to the plan. And so today I am happy to add a move I can do consistently.
Exactly what i was thinking. the other YT and IG posters are giving bad advice ! when I did pilates via Stoic Pilates about 15 years ago this what they also said, about having the small natural pocket of space above you bum at your lower back. they also mentioned engaging the abs. But Squat’s Uni. further tip of engaging the abs by feeling a lateral push is a wonderful pointer too.
Don't listen to general random advice like this. Depending on your individual anatomy (and weakness/injury) you may need to bend OR flatten your back. For example if your lower spine is naturallt in a forward bent position and you have a muscular weakness, you may well need to counter-act your back bend by tightening and flattening your back in order to engage the muscles needed to protect your spine from injury. Failure to do so can greatly hurt your back! So if you feel any sort of pain when moving or exercising, go see an expert in real life!

Yoooo what! Every video I've watched with a similar workout told me to flatten my back!!! You just blew me away. No wonder my back pain has been worse 😳
Legit the opposite my PTs always tell me and I have always had back pain, a million dead bugs later. Gonna try this! Thanks homie! Always love your tips.
Yeah and here. It's probably one of those things where nobody has actually done a proper scientific study and they're just guessing differently. I would imagine in reality it makes almost no difference so to answer the question authoritatively you would need a very very big study which nobody is going to pay for. If one was significantly worse than the other then it would be obvious and everyone would agree, so probably just do whatever.
See @erikv6 reply in the comments below. It depends on your own imbalances and weaknesses. This guy in the video is unfortunately being irresponsible in his one size fits all application of advice because it fits better in a 20 sec video and people gravitate towards ‘simple’. I’m in your boat where I actually need to focus on flattening my back since my lower spine curves to an extreme degree.
@@christianeigner5807 because you do it to correct lordosis he said about engaging abs to increase core stability lowering BACK PAIN not spinal posture so it's actually reasonable you have to maintain posture making your spine align better so both are correct you just misread entirely difference between choping axe and falling axe kinda same but different porpouses
Omg why are you the first person to ever say this that I've heard!?!? I had to figure this out myself the hard way. I even had to tell my PT I needed lumbar support for this. I use a towel it allows for controllable height so I don't hyper extend. I have big shoulders and a booty so neutral for me is not flat to the floor
You are comparing two different exercises when you use a squat as an example. One is against gravity and the other is gravity eliminated. I thought during a dead bug, by holding a pelvic tilt, kicking your leg straight out naturally makes the low back go in lordosis and by holding the pelvic tilt you are engaging your core to resist that force. I feel my core much more when i hold a pelvic tilt and does not exacerbate my LB symptoms.
Exactly, the reasoning in the video is very misleading with squat example. The point is to oppose the gravity with core muscles, whether it is plank or dead bug flexing the back a bit helps in resisting the gravitational force and arching the back is bad, while in squat or deadlift arching the back a bit can help resist the gravitational force and flexion of back can be bad there and sign that we are not actively engaging core muscles.

I'm a bit confused. My physiotherapists have always told me to flatten the back when doing the dead bug as a cue to engage the ab muscles. When I do it, I feel no pain, definitely feel my core in the exercise, and most importantly, my back pain improves. Context, I had a herniated disc. Is it possible that the flat back method helps, but the one you're suggesting here is simply superior? Or are you saying that flattening your back is fundamentally a negative option?

This is actually super helpful, I thought I needed the flat back to accurately engage my core. It would explain some back pain that I’ve been getting now that I’ve incorporated weights into my ab workouts Good use of clickbait, I learned something new 😂
No no no, it varies from person to person. I would rather advise someone to keep enough pressure on the backside so that I can’t slide my hand underneath their low back. We want to create a stacked pelvis and ribcage, the more you arch your back, the easier it is to lose that stacked position
Annoying that this is the opposite of what I’ve been told in Pilates all this time!! I trust you more 😂 And I even have scoliosis and lordosis WITH a twist at the bottom of my spine. I can’t wait to see if doing this helps!!!!
I think you need to have a strong core already to keep that neutral position while doing dead bug. If you have weak muscles in that area, it will increase the back pain, by putting the load on back more.
Your videos are usually a good resource, but this is the first time I’ve seen you get literally every single thing backwards. The flats fine challenge is the Abz without hurting the back. And working the Abz does not help the back pain, and usually exacerbates.
I had a little bit of lower back pain after working out to the point that it made doing calf raises a little painful as my last workout. I find that doing pigeon poses (& moving my upper body in different positions while in that pose n holding for 10 seconds) helps the pain go away.
Wish I had seen this a while ago… Had some issues and saw a PT, dead bug was an exercise they gave me. Also they told me to keep my back flat on the surface while performing it… no wonder I would have more pain after performing and the next day.
