    Bought a new one in 1970. Mine was a shade of green with a black vinyl top, flat black hood. Black interior with automatic and factory air. I later had it painted black , never did like that green. About 120 mph was about top speed. Wasn't as fast as a lot of cars in the day. Mine was definitely a stoplight car. What it did do, it did quickly. When you went to pass a car you had to wait until you were in the other lane before punching it or you would run over what was in front of you. I had several people who wanted to race me on the open road. I knew what my car could do and high speed wasn't on the ticket. I knew that I would have my ass handed to me. It was rare that they would run stoplights though. It's the only car I've owned in 58 years of driving I wish I had back. One thing he said about seeing another one on the road ,in all the time I had mine I only seen one other. Mine was the only one that the AMC dealership in Winston Salem NC ever sold.

    Thanks for this video. What a great car. I was 10 years old in 1973 and my uncle had one of these. In my eyes, he was the coolest guy in the world. My other uncle had a black '73 Charger R/T. My own first car was a '68 Beaumont with the 307 V8. Man, those were the days. I try to keep the spirit alive thru my '19 Challenger 392. If I had the money, I'd have a '70 Chevelle SS. There were so many really great cars, it's hard to pick just one.

    One of the most attractive and underrated muscle cars.....I knew a guy that owned one....ran 14.20's at 100mph, dead stock.....did two things to get it to go well into the 13's, he put a carb on the 390 from a 428 CJ Ford....the 735 Holley, and re-curved the distributor. The carb seemed to be the achilles heel that prevented the car from going 13's "out of the box:....THAT got him going mid 13's at 103 mph with ease...The 390 was a very strong motor, those 291 small chamber dog leg port heads flowed REALLY well for a wedge head.

    One of the BEST looking muscle cars ever,,,,super clean sharp looks, superb powertrain....
    Solid 14.0's at 100+ mph. REAL easy to get these beauties to go 12's without a lot of work.
    Just add a set of headers, put a holley 735 carb from a 428 CJ on top, 4.10 gears and give it a dyno tune...

    My brother had one of these and the 390 had 13:1 compression pistons and rings into this engine and it ate up every car on the road it raced.. Dodge.. Chev.. Ford it was nuts.. Even with a full car load it could hit 60 mph in under 4 secs...it was nuts but fun..is was truly a machine and then some. 😊
    Even with stock engine it was fast and it came equipped with a holley 4 barrel and the block looked the size of a 289 Ford engine but it performed.

    What a great car. AMC offered a service kit with a hot cam for this car that upped the HP by 100 horses to a whopping 472hp!! They also offered a 5.0 rear gear set. With just the service kit installed it was the fastest muscle car, it ran high 12 second times in the 1/4 mile. Drop in the 5.0 gears and this was an absolute beast. Thanks, Lou this is a truly superb muscle car. It is just a shame that only 2,300 were built. AMC may have been late to the muscle car party but they ended it with a bang.

      Trivia-But let’s talk engine. The 6.3-liter V8 in the AMC Rebel Machine paired itself with a very unique exhaust as well as intake and jetted a massive 340 horses and a very astounding 430 ft-lb torque. It came with a four-speed manual transmission as a standard, with automatic transmission available as an option.
      Gear ratios in the rear differential were 3.91:1 or 5.00:1, and you could get in a limited-slip setup as well. Standard disc brakes went in the front to be able to take all that beefy suspension and that front-heavy cooling system to be able to bear that hefty engine.
      The Machine could go 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds, and the quarter-mile was achieved in 14.4 seconds, rather quick if pitted against even the Roadrunner and the various Chevy SS models. Further upgrades available from AMC dealers took the output to over 400 horses and the quarter-mile fell below 12 seconds.

    What a beautiful car. There was a performance package offered by AMC for the car that owners could get and would put it in the 12s . It added about 100 HP to the engine. Had that package been offered as an option with the car it would have put "The Machine" at the top of the performance cars of the day. One thing not mentioned was that the 390 engine in "The Machine" was from Ford. Thank you so much for sharing this really great offering from AMC with us. I'm so glad to see that it ended up with someone who truly appreciates this unique car.

      the 390 WAS NOT from ford . it was an amc design . the ford 390 was completely different .

    • @MrUltraworld
      @MrUltraworld 6 років тому +2

      The AMC small blocks were their own design. The displacement was stamped on the blocks. They ranged from 290 ci in 1966 on up to 390 ci in 1968. The 390 got forged internals.

    • @johnnewell4849
      @johnnewell4849 6 років тому +1

      The engine was not from Ford but the AMC original design used the Ford engine as a starting point for all 2nd V8 generation motors. The Group 19 Service Package was a dealer installed (or self-installed) kit that added approximately 132 horsepower to the engine and did in fact make the Machine the fastest muscle car tested by the performance magazines in 1969/70 at 12.73 e.t. and 107 mph in the quarter. In fact it was the only car tested that ran in the 12s.

    I just found this video so my input is a bit dated. AMC specified Champion N-10-Y spark plugs for this engine. Bad choice. Use Champion N-12-Y plugs and it will run much better. Timing at 6º BTDC works better too. If the vacuum advance is switched to manifold vacuum (live) instead of "ported vacuum" (at the carb port), the torque will increase dramatically so hang on! Of course the vacuum line to distributor must be removed when setting timing or a gross error will occur.
    This car was made to handle in the turns, and it does. The only problem I ever had was the rear-end torque links ripping out of the body, rivets and all from too much horsepower.

      Back in '77, my buddy had a 68 AMX 390 4 SPEED, and he laid a whipping on every muscle car out, including L88 'Vettes. /// I also replied to that comment about your Machine being a loser competitor to the Judge. //// Google " Mike's 1967 Ambassador " on You Tube and watch that 343 GO !! /// I've owned a number of Ambassadors, including a 66, a '67 990 and a '67 Ambo DPL w/ AT floor shift & buckets & 343. Also a Gremlin. I was once a member of N.A.M.D.R.A. and one time they featured in their newsletter a '70 or 72 Rebel w/ a bone stock 401; only headers & 10" slicks and that car ran a 12 sec. flat 1/4 mile. /// FYI : THE '67 Ambo is 2" shorter than a '67 GTO. /// I'd like to see a Judge even keep up to your Rebel Machine. /// They also refer to the ;67 Ambos as " the Forgotten Muscle Car." I'd like to see a Judge line up against an SCRambler also to shut some people up about AMC. ( almost FORGOT : I also had a '66 Rambler Classic.

      Did you check out " Mike's 1967 Ambassador " on You Tube ? It's a 343 w/ 380 HP. //// My MAIN RIDE is a 1967 Merc Cougar XR-7 GT with the "S" code 390 : 428 CJ cam & rods, , Accel Comp coil, 10.5: 1 compression flat tops, Holley 4150 dual feed drilled to 810 CFM, C6 w/ a Stage III shift kit. .... Color Code " T" : candy aPPLE RED. as far as I know, my Cat is a one only as virtually all XR-7 GT's were 4 speeds & had the S code Merc engine. My Cougar was factory built w/ the S code Ford V8 : 10 extra horses. I was told by the CCOA that my car doesn't exist ! LOL. /// wORD is that 3 1970 Rancheros w/ the BOSS 429 also went out the back door. Nobody knows where they are , but apparently it's a true story. As for why my Cougar got the S code Ford instead of the S code Merc V8, STORY IS THAT THE cOUGAR & Mustang assembly lines were side by side, and swapping parts between the 2 lines DID happen.

    The 390 was rated at 325 horsepower in 1970 - the heads differed from the 315 HP cars built previously. However, the Machine was rated at 340 HP. The difference owed to the Offenhauser manifold and, I believe, a slightly larger carburetor.
    Perhaps someone who remembers better than I can answer the carburetor size question.

      The intake was AMCs own cast iron unit and is one of the distinct parts that makes a Rebel Machine a Rebel Machine. The Offenhauser manifold was an after market aluminum hi riser that was never a popular item. The carb was the same 4 barrel 600 cfm carb that was installed on all other 4 barrel cars AMC sold in the 1970 model year.

    That's a great looking car, and I'm a big fan of the AMX. Just don't tell my friends. They call me a Mopar racist. Because everything I own, or look at is Mopar. Looking forward to more of your videos. You should take a trip up to Red Deer, Alberta and film the CAMA show. It's no where near the size of shows, in the states. People bring in cars from different provinces, everything from classics, muscle cars, trucks and front wheel drive. Last year I was checking out a GLH, telling my nephew I wanted one of these since I was in high school, saw the ad in a magazine. Owner came up and asked what GLH stood for. Goes Like Hell, asked what his buddies GLHS stood for. Goes Like Hell Somemore. He laughed, tossed me the keys, said jump in and fire it up. LOL sadly he wouldn't let me take her for a drive, and it was not for sale.

      Hi Chad Allan, Glad you were able to see a top one for you :-) Not sure what prices are for a "Machine" as I guess it would also be based on condition, mileage, and who owned it before. Hope you're driving your Machine soon, Lou

    Not a car you can hide in. Thanks for finding it. Have you featured a Dodge lil red express?

      You're right, no hiding in this car :-) Lil Red is a pickup, not a "Car" story. Between us...if I see a really well restored one, and I've gotten enough cars out of my system (which may not happen), you might see one on the Channel some day. Shhh, that'll be our secret because I have a soft spot for that Dodge pickup truck :-) Lou

      @@loucostabile I'll never get cars out of my system. Hmmm maybe a second channel- My Truck Story.

    I know they only made around 2300 of these. How many do you think are still around?

      @@loucostabile The funniest thing is that I have always loved cars and I mean all cars but I didn't know anything about The Machine until I saw it on Forza on xbox. Then I started reading about it. It's now my favorite car and my goal now is just to see one in person! Mind you I'm 55 years old.

      I know of one that was totaled in 1971 in a t-bone accident, I was in the backseat, almost killed. My brother (he was in the passenger seat in 1971) bought one a couple of years back. Wants to be buried in it.
