- This 1972 AMC Rebel is a green “Machine” that ventured out from the typical AMC red, white, and blue color scheme. With a now functional hood scoop, AMC hood tachometer, and a 340HP Solid Lifter 390cu.in. power plant, this ’72 Rebel is definitely one mean race “Machine.”

I guess I'm an old man myself now. I've also owned probably way to many AMC'S/Ramblers. They have always been the most fun/unique cars I've owned. Especially the S/C Ramblers and AMX's

Beautiful condition! Kenosha is my home town and just about all of my relatives worked at AMC, including my mom and dad.
AMC made some really unique if not unusual cars in they’re day.
The fact that you rarely see AMCs of any sort nowadays just makes them all the more cool for me. I'd totally have one over a Big Three-mobile over the same time period, no doubt about it! That's probably why I own a Studebaker.
The Matador Machine is even rarer only 50 made and 2 survive. They came with the superior 401 engine and slight different front end

When I was 12 my buddy's older brother bought one brand new it was blue with a blue interior when for many of ride's in it. Loved that car always wanted one. They moved away and took my car with them. Dam!
A lot of the solid cars disappeared.
Probably only a handful of blue/blue ones made in the 1st place.
Black interiors were most common.
Mine was big bad blue with black interior and hood scoop.

Had a red one that lived next door when I was growing up in the 70 s.
My Grandfather has a Hornet and a Matador, both with the 304 they were reliable cars.
Matadors ran in Nascar too
AMC had a catalog at their dealership's parts counter. It was known as the Group 19 performance parts program. From this catalog you could order high performance cam kits that included everything needed to improve your engine's performance. Other things like intake manifolds, carbs, headers. rear gear sets, traction bars heavy duty suspension components, etc. It was like what Chrysler corporation's Direct Connection was.
These cars were from my era of street racing but were never on my radar. Expect for the Javelins/AMX you didn’t see AMC’s much if at all.
They were kind of the redheaded stepchild of the muscle car world.in drivers ed.in 1974 1 of the cars we learned on was the amc matador.what a pc.that was.never seen 1 again.
No one saw my 69 javelin 390 because the door locks were always broken master cylinder new one every year, seat just fell apart, and the the one I like the best, door glass once a year would fall down in to the doors both sides vac windshield motor, at stop signs they don't move, but hey this car make me a good mechanic, oh one more rear oil pan seal, leaked, you just about had to pull the motor to replace it,oh one more the headliner came down on the highway
Some People were outright hostile/rude to you if you owned an AMC. Rude Comments, a mean look. Someone even spit on my car a long time ago. There was/is an underlying hatred of AMCs by some. This isn't said a lot, but I steered clear of the haters because I was worried of what harm they might do.
@@michaelmccarthy4615 I get that feeling sometimes as well. I own myself a 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk as my first car. I love her to pieces but other folks think that Studebaker is an absolute joke (which it really isn't). Spitting and mean looks are standard-issue stuff with the Independents it seems. It royally sucks on ice.
I've been to a lot of car shows for many years and only saw one. This is the other one.

Great vid and Machine! If I may point out - the automatic transmission (option) was NOT a Torque Flight. It was a Borg-Warner. Torque Flites were not available (with AMC) untill '72. Additionally the steering wheel although AMC issue is not stock. The 3 spoke Rallye steering was an option and (I believe) was not offered untill either '71 or '72. Either way this is a magnificent example of a very rare car that was in fact rare in the day - great runners! Long live AMC muscle.
Add a black vinyl top and that was what mine looked like before I had it painted black also had factory air. Might add I bought it new and it was the only one ever sold at that particular dealership in 1970. Price was $3500 + a 1963-1/2 Ford Galaxy 500 as trade in.
I have a mint 67 rebel with a nice 401 . I think alot of people forget how much of an impact AMC had in the world . There only is one and never will be another vehicle as " JEEP " . AMC baby
Many people forgot that AMC built some cool hot rods. They could never seem to shake the Rambler image. I would have any of them.
All the body logos change to Le Appareil when it's driven through St. Boniface 😁

This looks so much better than the stars and bars paint scheme , and the green makes it very nostalgic muscle magic feel. I hope this car stays with this owner it, she's earned it.

I'm a Ford guy. but some of these AMC cars have earned real love! The fact that it was Street/Strip really warms my heart. Keep up the good work.

dflf they were sold up here in the tri-colour paint scheme-and it’s not like it was slathered in stars and bars. I’ve seen several both in traffic, and at car shows over the years.
My Uncle had that exact car, but in red. He eventually painted it grey and got rid of it sometime in the 70’s. It spent it’s life in Northern Ontario and I have a really cool picture of it somewhere where it’s parked by a real pretty lake. Went up in my Aunt’s garage attic and found the rims for it today. Might have to find the car to go with them.
Still a few AMC cars in OZ . Did you know they were assembled in Malta 🇲🇹 for some time.
A couple non-stock items in the interior- steering wheel is from a later model. Radio is a 68/69 unit. 70 relocated the controls to the top. Probably swapped out an AM in favor of an FM.

My dad bought me a 1969 rebel SST in the early 1980s. It was my first car. It had a small straight six in it and I used tool around everywhere in it. A woman in a Cadillac nails me at a red light and the car was Parted out. I never forgot my little rebel SST. That’s why I hate Cadillacs!
Ron Simmonds: Back in the late 70's,my brother-in-law borrowed my 1974 Challenger to go pick up a friend of his.He totaled the car on the way back home.
In highschool autoshop early 90's I just finished installing the motor back in my awesome green/green 70 SS Monte Carlo and converting it to HEI ignition, guages, chrome push button start and a drunk lady with no insurance in a Olds 442 hits me head on about 40mph while stopped and destroyed the frame. I pulled the motor & traded it and my 71 parts car for a 77 Trans-am and sold it with the motor to a kid at shop cuz I just wasn't attached or had the gumption to put that one together.

Beautiful car. I didn't know "The Machine" was available in different colors either. I guess it was like the '69 GTO Judge, available only in carousel red for the first several thousand units, then any color Pontiac offered. I would love to own a Rebel or a '68-'70 Javelin. I've owned a lot of cars but never an AMC.
The 1st 1,000 cars were RW&B.
Then it was a $75 option paint. The later solid cars seem to have gained in popularity in the last 10 years or so. But all advertising shows just the early rwb cars.
IMO, the solid color cars were often overlooked and scrapped.
I've had about 40 but never any Ford's? No real reason, my folks had a few, 2 Mustangs even, my brother and sister each had a Mustang before... idk?

Thanks, Dennis and owner: nice 70 AMC MACHINE .. interestingly, the first new Car I bought was from the DODGE/AMC ( a common occurrence in N Indiana,etc,), adjacent to Pharmacy where I worked ; buying a 70 DODGE Coronet 500/383\310\ auto.. Anyways, we did see a Machine or few come thru, I thought the RED/White/ Blue I seen were a little garish! Though I briefly looked at a an AMC RWBLUE, AND A 70 Challenger/4 SPD/ RT/SE Magnum, **not buying those,etc..
And had some eclectic cars,I seen I believe was a 65 marlin fastback that had a 3 sp. Manual w/a high low feature giving second & third year an overdrive is the best I can describe it.
Did Dodge copy Marlin with it's Charger ?
@@donaldgarver6594 They do have similar styling but I think Dodge made the 66/67 Charger a fastback so it would be more aerodynamic for NASCAR racing. It is just basically a Coronet from the doors forward. But I'm not sure where I read that so it might not be 100% correct.

The hood tach is interesting. It is the third design. First was the 'tall' tach, then 1968 was the shorter height version and in1970 a design that had a vacuum hose attachment to help reduce condensation inside the tach was released.
There were numerous names on the dial face. 'Pontiac', 'Buick', 'AC Delco', and 'AMC'. Yenko added their name themselves when they used the hood tach.
When used on the Rebel, the tach was NOT attached to the hood. To prepare the tach for the car, a thin piece of foam seal was applied to the tach shell so it sealed when in the hood scoop. The tach was mounted on an adaptor plate and then secured to the hood scope.
Interestingly the tach was so weather-proofed in the hood scoop it was mounted in only its grey primer paint and the paint curing heat label ("Do not exceed 180 degrees F) remained perfect. The only thing else AMC did to install the tach was grind a face corner slightly to get it to mount into the hood scoop.
How do I know this? In the early 1980s I was attending a swap meet in southeastern Ontario Canada and I saw this damaged hood scoop (the broken piece was still duct taped to it), with its hood tach still with it. I bought it for $xx (cheap I thought) and resold the scoop (dumb move).
Still have the 'AMC' tach in my collection.
My goof. The "Yenko" I was thinking about was actually Joe Oldham's black 1969 Motion Phase 2 Camaro that had a hood tach. My apologies to the Yenko enthusiasts.

I'm a very fortunate person to know where there is one. It's a survivor in gun metal grey, the machine. 15 thousand original miles on it. Only used as grocery getter by first owner and occasionally weekend racing as the deck was shaved and fitted with high compression heads. Was in my family since 80. Sadly the exhaust manifolds were lost for the car, they are unique to thar year dog leg style. I thought all of the machines had 4 speed stick. How many were automatic???
A VERY overlooked but an AMAZING AMC muscle car that's on the same level as anything from Ford(I'm a Ford guy) Chevy or Mopar.

Very slick! What gears in the rears I wonder? Solid cams are nice for instant revs but a pain adjusting the valves every 3,000 miles
Standard was a 3.54 but dealer installed gears were available up to a 5.00, with a couple of others in between.

MY 4:10's and TH350 definitely needed a overdrive to run the highways anywhere below 3k rpm. P.s. hey scrambler, there's a cool 69 SST Rebel a guy dragged home down the street, pretty cool stuff! He's got a Matador and Javelin waiting for restore too

AMC DID make a hand full Rebel Machines in 71 ! Had a good friend who owned a 70 Machine , it was kind of a jade green color with a 4 speed. It ran ok but those cars were very heavy, not positive but they weighed in at something like 3,800 to 3,900 hundred pounds.
Noooo nooooo...a wagonner didn't even weigh that much! Not even close. That Rebel may have come in around 3300-3400 lbs maybe. AMC ALWAYS had great power to weight ratios.
@@audieconrad8995 Just check the specks. The car weighed (curb weight) 3,650 with a 4 speed. So an auto and a full tank of fuel it was a heavy car. They were not that quick.

@RoaroftheTiger -- Oleg Cassini did not design the Matador which was "designed" by Dick Teague. In the 1970's AMC brought in some fashion designers who penned stripe packages and the look of the interiors and Cassini was one of those designers along with Aldo Gucci, Pierre Cardin and of course the most popular was the Levi designed interior of the AMC Gremlin.
