It was 98, had already exausted all the Saturn games that arrived ar my local store. Shortly after playing Ocarina of Time on a lended 64 the same friend handled me a box of this game he found forgotten on his drayer (Jewel case obviously broken as every Saturn game ever) and it was such a strange game yet só compelling. One of the few long games of that era that I made trough the end with a true adventure feel. Good memories...

This game practically raised me. I remember renting it from The Warehouse for a weekend and I finished parallel 1 on Saturday. I was so disappointed that I'd already finished the game. I was so bored that I decided to just play it again a little bit and see if I could make it through the first part any faster. I made it through on yellow, started "parallel 2" and fell in love with this game. I still have my original copy from way back then, but I only play it on an emulator. Teenaged me definitely loved the ending with Kaye and the fire for no reason. I remember really feeling that guitar riff at the end of that one. Aww man, it's time to play Dark Savior again!!

Great review! I remember reading back in the day that this game was heavily censored for the Western release. The "chocolates" currency was originally cigarettes, which makes much more sense as a currency in a prison environment.

Makes sense, Landstalker was censored for the Western release too. Pretty sure in the Japanese version there's a scene that leads to *heavily* implied sex.

This is the extra content, an audio novel that tells the whole story of the game, for now I have only translated the first volume because as you can see, it is in Japanese, if someone is interested in listening to it because you want to find something more about the content of the game here is the link of the video:
    ua-cam.com/video/x_BAslOYVwY/v-deo.html
The problem about the lack of response of the controls is due to playing it in the emulator, I do not remember that this problem existed on the original console.
*THANKS FOR SHARING THIS GOOD GEM OF THE PAST!*

Such a mind blowing story and way you unlock all the endings is amazing. The 6th storyline where you are basically a pit fighter in the afterlife was always nuts to me. Also this was another game that doesn't give it to you. You have to learn and play better, you can't just mash and spam.

Nice! Your video just reminded me how much I liked the game back in the day - I definitely should replay it some day and check out all five parallels! 😀

I picked this up from Wally World for $20 back in June 1997 and it became my most played game that summer and managed to get all of the endings multiple times. As I've stated before, I highly regret selling my Saturn stuff towards a Dreamcast exactly two years later. Oh well...

I could tell immediately as a kid that this game was different. The storyline was so well thought out and seeded questions that needed answering within the first 10 minutes. Also when I first rotated the camera and saw the 3d environments in all their glory I nearly shat myself.

Mind blowing indeed! So many years have passed since I first played the game, and I'm still hooked. The music, the drama, the plot twists, the curious characters (like Indigo and his prophecy, Kay's sister) and the sheer abundance of them, the capuring feature which was the coolest thing ever... this game is a classic

I’m not entirely sure how I would feel about this game today, but it still looks amazing. It was one of my favorite games as a kid. I was and still am a die hard Nintendo person, but the Saturn was my first 64 bit system and I still love it. I lost all my games in a house fire and slowly building back up my collection.

You can capture using almost any character, not just Garian. For some reason it doesn't work when playing as Dunbar, Matt, or Doc, though, so some players try using Dunbar for the first BIOS fight and just assume only Garian can capture.

It's been a while since I first played this but I cannot remember ever having had any trouble with the controls. Surely nowadays they have better options there but Land Stalker's choice of perspective incl. controls (on which DS's are based) was a huge improvement over its predecessors.

I'm playing this with the arcade stick controller right now and it's making the platforming much more tolerable. Yea, this game 100% utilizes it's shortcomings for difficulty spikes. It's pretty ridiculous at times, sparse checkpoints and trial and error platforming. I'm enjoying it all the same though, the presentation is really impressive.

Fug I love this game. Great review of it. Surprised you didn't mention the fuggin minecart part. The views in there are terrible. I also love the shit out of the storylines for this. Not just cause of the amount, but also because it's a great example of how to do parallel universes. A lot of the time this sort of thing is purely used for it's shock factor, but in dark savior there are a lot of parts where if you go through the game red > yellow > blue you'll see how some of the weird things that happened during red and yellow were affected by blue. Most of the time you just get garbage like FF14 with it's grandfather paradox crap.

  • @gurriato

For the life of me I cannot understand how something like this can ever happen. The controls are immediately uncomfortable for anyone who tries them, there's no way everyone thought they were fine before shipping the game. Just a bit of testing inside the office would have sufficed to improve them, but they didn't, and so the work of the entire team is dragged down as a result. A bad 3D camera or combo system can be difficult to fix, but movement in a 2D plane, without diagonals no less? It just boggles the mind.

    • @SonofSethoitae
      @SonofSethoitae 7 місяців тому

The controls really aren't bad on real hardware. Emulation is not kind to this game. You can absolutely use the diagonals to control Garian though, not sure what you're talking about there.

I have always had mixed feelings about this game. Such a compelling storyline and immersive setting and atmosphere but it feels unfinished.
The combat system also feels like a failed experiment. This one would definitely have benefited from a deeper turn based combat system like Phantasy Star or FF or alternatively plain hack n slash like Landstalker.
Also the physics - Garian can accelerate in mid air, WTF? Controlling Nigel in Landstalker was sometimes frustrating but that was part of the challenge - Nigel wasn’t Lara Croft. The platforming sections in Dark Savior are comparatively a bit corny and too easy.
In short, great story but gameplay wise it doesn’t know what it wants to be.
