- According to a study done by Brand Analytics and a quick search of Google Trends after Beijing Olympics 2022, Yuzuru Hanyu is the most mentioned athletes worldwide. His popularity has gone beyond Japan and figure skating. His popularity is superior to any other figure skater out there and almost comparable to a pop star, celebrity. No other Olympic champions have ever come close to his dominance in terms of popularity. So here's the question many new fans asked - why? Why is Hanyu so popular? What are the moments that contributed to the rise of Hanyu's popularity? How did he attract so many fans from around the world? We decided to make a documentary to explore those moments that contributed to the rise of Yuzuru fandom around the world. This is the preview. Perhaps that's because he did not try to become popular. Maybe it's just because his performance shows his gratitude for being able to do the figure skating he loves and for his family, coaches, and fans who support him in doing so. A noble and solitary person, I don't know anyone else who is as transparent as he is. I have been a fan of Mr. Hanyu for 11 years now. The more I get to know him, the more I love him.

Well said. "Transparent" that's what he is. He once said he is an athlete not an artist/celebrity, but his fame is beyond all of that. He doesn't even have a social media account to promote himself.

As a 50 year old woman, let me share my journey with Yuzuru. I was randomly recommended this channel's video: "Sportsmanship in Figure Skating | Best and Worst Moments on ice". So of course Yuzuru being the best example, caught my attention and I searched him. I watched his Olympic Notte Stellata first and by the time it finished, I was in tears. To this day, I don't know how his skating made me think of the last days of my father, but it did. Weeks later I learned that Notte Stella is originally "the dying swan" piece by Camille Saint-Saëns. I was truely in awe of his expression, his grace and his superb skating. I didn't care less about how he looked and frankly for me, Yuzuru is not a man who I can call "attractive", he is not my type .
Then when I searched him, I found out his fighter side. All the pain he has been through, all the drama, the injuries... Isn't it very human to side with someone who suffered so much and been treated unjust? Remember "X Factor"? Don't we root for the ones who are equally talented as others but have been though a lot? That is human nature. And Yuzuru is an open book, he shows his vulnerable side very honestly. I find it unique and courageous.
There maybe people who adore him because of his looks, I know that many women find him very attractive, but I know that I am not alone to admire this young man simply because of his passion, his never ending love and outmost respect for figure skating, his desire to surpass himself year after year and still stay a humble man. He puts his heart in the sport, he puts his soul to whatever he is doing. This is why it is usually "love at first sight" with his skating: you can't turn your eyes away from Yuzuru's sincere and passionate presence on the ice.

And yes, it's not just his fighting spirit, but also his vulnerable side of the story, that makes him the complete person, a sincere soul who's just so passionate. When you look at him skate and behave, you suddenly feel like "the world is beautiful"... Do share more about him and we hope more and more people find out about Hanyu, the skater with a golden heart 💓💓
Personally I find him aesthetically beautiful but that's not why I love him. It is everything you feel about him that makes me love him. It's his heart, his soul, his passion I feel a connection to.
This is so well said. I’m also much older than Yuzuru and he’s not my type either. But I must admit his face reflects his kindness and sincerity. You look at him and tell yourself: he doesn’t lie, his eyes let you read through his mind. He is the Truth. Besides his amazing skating skills and artwork (even though I know he doesn’t want people to call it art but competition), I just adore the person he is. He gives you hope and makes you believe in humanity. I’ve started to tell Yuzuru’s story to my 8 yo son. I want to show him there are great people loyal to themselves despite adversity. And regardless of pettiness against them they hold their heads high with dignity.

Thank you very much for your story. Notte Stellata reminding you of your late father reminded me of Brian Orser, the passing of his father, Yuzuru Hanyu and 2017 Worlds Notte Stellata.
You may have already heard the story, but Brian Orser was very close to his father and his father passed away on March 3, 2017. He did not say anything about this and carried on with his coaching at the TCC. Somehow Brian had a feeling that Yuzu had sensed the change in him, although he did not say anything. Anyway, long story short, Brian does not usually stay for the gala, but he did at the 2017 Worlds to watch both Yuzu and Javi.
After he had finished Notte Stellata, Yuzu came up to Brian and said words to the effect of “that was for your father” and “I was thinking of your father while skating”. Brian said that this was the first time he felt supported by Yuzu, rather than the other way around. After this, he said that he was able to start voting on on from his loss.
To add to it is his character.... IMO even other skater achieve all his achievements i feel like they will not be as popular as Yuzu as there is something in his personality and attitude that make him more lovable.

I was 16 years old and felt very lonely, but discovering Yuzuru and other skaters motivated me to do exercises and sport, to keep myself in a good shape. The sport just made me focused on getting muscles and eating well instead of my sadness.
I’m now almost 23 years old and I don’t watch Figure Skating as much in general… but I’ll always watch and support Yuzuru, until the day he stops. I’m happy and proud of everything he has done, and motivated me to do without even knowing I exist😅
Even then, it feels weird that 6 years passed so quickly.
I wish I could go back to the first time I saw him skate and live it all over again.

I sincerely doubt any of the skaters are doing this for no pay this is how they make a living and probably Yuzu makes the most. He's the draw, the star and they will be paying him a lot to participate, so I don't think that's it. Maybe you're right and it's a translation thing.

Or maybe she meant the income from the exhibit was all being donated, which it is. Maybe she just meant he's not benefiting personally from the sale of Yuzu memorabilia at the exhibit. And speaking of-- I truly wish they would make it less of a hassle for people overseas to be able to buy Yuzu memorabilia. There are so many things I would like to have that vendors and retailers just can't/won't ship out of the country. Or the only place to get them is outrageously overpriced on ebay. Some people in Japan could make a lot of money being buyers for overseas customers.

I didn't know who Yozuru was, and I saw a video of him on Instagram, but at first sight I saw a legendary person with high charisma, a presence that overshadowed the rest of his competitors, highly skilled, even though I don't know anything about this sport. I became addicted to watching him

I have only started following him since the 2018 Olympics, but am still lucky enough to witness his growth and follow his journey in the past four years! Hope there is (at least) another four years to come!!
Coming from someone who just discovered him this year, it was the 2014 collision with another Chinese skater that made me a fan after just watching one video. I wasn’t influence by his popularity, art, wits and looks when I became a fan, it was more of admiration for his grit and determination when he immediately stood up after every fall. The art, wits and looks is only a plus as to why I became a dedicated fan ❤️.

Lo que gusta a los admiradores de Yuzuru Hanyu no son los 4saltos o la dificultad técnica de sus programas sino un arte basado en una sensibilidad casi mística. Para llegar a ello hay que ser de una "pasta" y tener un ADN muy especial. For me he is the GOAT for a rare and incredible coexistence of elements, all in one athlete/artist/performer.
The beauty of his skating captivates, it's like a drug. I remember that I rewatched Chopin step seq on loop dozen times when I first discovered him. It is perfection for 30 seconds, unbelievable. The musicality, the expressiveness, the elegant lines studied to emphasize his programs.... he jumps with gorgeous tech and sets his jumps perfectly in the choreography, look at Rondò Salchow for example (jnats version)... spins with always different positions of the arms, hands, fingers, neck. Yuzu is elegant and charismatic in an inborn way, in his sparkling costumes he looks like a fairytale prince or a rock star or a warrior or a sorcerer....Figure skating is a unique blend of athleticism and performing art, everything has to be melted in a perfect composition to capture the viewer. Million of people naturally recognize the superiority of what he put on the ice, no need for push on social media accounts, that he hasn't. Lately whoever lands the most quadruple jumps wins, and the PCS points increase based on quads, this is clear. Not to mention the endless technical discussions on cheated jumps, pre-rotation, URs, qJumps .... and ways to make the technical judgment more objective. Also in this context Yuzu shows his greatness by writing an entire thesis on AI applied to skating.
Although someone else has won the last Olympic and 3 world competitions, it is Yuzu's popularity that has grown dramatically even during the last 4 years, especially after Beijing. In China his popularity is crazy. Comments about him are written in all the languages of the world. He is by far the most requested and loved: it is clear that fans don't follow medals and scores, but watch and judge with their eyes. I believe that if Isu wants to make the sport grow it must reflect on this: what should be valued in figure skating?
Very well said ! I feel that Yuzuru’s vision of figure skating aligns with what the overwhelming majority of the public want to see. He is the embodiment of excellence in all aspects of figure skating for many. From the ISU’s own rules, his blend of artistry & complex technical excellence should be scored much higher than others who only complete elements, but this is not happening.
The ISU leaders’ vision appears to be all about quad jumps (quality, PR or UR, doesn’t seem to matter) and nothing else, so they are selecting their chosen ‘champions’ and scoring them accordingly, regardless of their own rules.
I think that the ISU is making a grave error - AI judging of as many aspects of the sport as possible is vital for the future of figure skating. The public can see with their own eyes what is being put before them. We know what should be valued according to ISU’s own rules and we know when the scoring is incorrect. It insults the audience’s intelligence to think otherwise.
I feel that the ISU strategy is taking the sport further and further away from Yuzuru’s vision and from what the public want to see. Such a shame.

I need to know all of the commentaries about hanyu all around the world. It would be so nice to see all of those positve comment about him.
I know. I love hearing him praised by the people who are in the community like analysis, and sports journalists, and other skaters etc. It somehow makes me feel very happy for him to get that validation that we Fanyus know he deserves from people whose opinions of him carry the most weight.
Yuzuru doesn't need to decorate himself to be loved. His skating performance itself has a magnetic appeal, because his skating is a human drama, a human cry, s human love, and a human life. He throws all of his soul and heart into his program, which moves and hits the hearts of all they audiences. If there is anybody who isn't moved by the beauty of his program and the soft yet technically difficult skating of Yuzuru, he or she doesn't have a heart that appreciates the human life. Yuzuru doesn't need to say anything to appeal to the audiences, except only by skating on the ice. He skates to show human emotions that connect all of audiences hearts.

@@letyyuzu7539 I also often thought he looked like an angel. But then I realized that by that comparison I was devaluing the tremendous effort he was putting into working on his personality. As a psychologist, I think it's much harder and more worthy to be that kind of person than it is to be an angel (that is, endowed with something by birthright). He struggles with his demons and fears every day. It is a fierce struggle; we all struggle. I don't want to forget that when I look at him. This is just a small part of my thoughts on your words.

The chills I get just by this preview. I cannot wait for the full documentary but man oh man, I know it's far from there but Yuzu's full documentary when he retires will be sooooooooooooooooooooooo long. I want it on netflix as series with so many episodes. If Michael Jordan has it, Yuzuru Hanyu, the forever GOAT and most complete male figure skater of all time NEEDS IT too.

I stumbled upon Yuzuru by chance, while translating an article about asthma. I researched the subject and found an article, describing how he became the GOAT regardless of this condition. Of course, I had to check out his performance! I'm not particularly into figure skating, but I got hooked nevertheless.
You and I are like a lot of people. We are not figure skating fans, we are fans of Yuzuru Hanyu. I serendipitously discovered him while channel surfing during the 2014 Sochi games and caught him in in the short program skating Parisienne Walkways. I'd never seen skating like that before and that was the beginning of my trip down the rabbit hole... Yuzu is the complete package as a human being. It is his fine personality and character that is the most attractive part of him.
@@georgeshimizu We don't know his actual personality, which is another admirable thing - he has not turned his private life into a clickbait. We know his stage persona, or rather stage personas - he is so versatile! He turned figure skating into theatre and is completely absorbed in each role, be it the desperate Romeo, heroic Seimei or graceful Swan. I know it's weird, but he somehow reminds me of Freddie Mercury, who was also able to electrify the audience.
@@paunitka7 He is definitely not lacking for charisma! I was introduced to and spoke with Yuzu briefly at the Toronto Cricket Club after the 2019 Autumn Classic International. I am disabled and in a wheelchair and he immediately got down on his knees to speak with me. He was very respectful and humble. I don't know how much you have studied his life, but he survived the March 11, 2011 great East Japan earthquake and tsunami and has dedicated his life to supporting victims of disasters. He has been very generous in donations and time. After Sochi, he received the equivalent of approximately $60,000 US for winning the Olympic gold medal and he donated all of - One half to Sendai city and the other half to Miyagi Prefecture. He did the same after 2018 PyeongChang. He received about $100,000 US and he did the same thing here. He has been donating his royalties from his autobiographies to support the only all year round ice rink in Miyagi Prefecture. He is involved every year in 24 hour TV telethon with his annual performance. It goes on and on. That's what I meant by his personality and character. He is a superstar but is respectful, humble, kind and generous. I sensed a real sincerity about him.

I don't doubt that he is a good person, what I meant was that he doesn't give us this celebrity cringe and drama, instead he protects his privacy. I look forward to your documentary! It's a complex puzzle, with many parts. Hanyu Yuzuru is beautiful, humble, courageous, the GOAT and everything else, but also something more I can't put my finger on. I think he is an old soul. But what is it about him that makes people like me, a stranger to him, care so much for his health and happiness? People in the millions all feel the same.
@Ying Peng Thank you. I have heard something similar said about him once before and it doesn't surprise me at all. At one point in my life I was meditating and trying to learn to see people's auras, but never could. It may be a gift you just have or you don't. One thing I can say about Yuzuru, he isn't like anyone else.
Wendy - I’m in tears reading your comment as it hits home so much. Old soul was the words I was looking for. I’ve always sensed Yuzuru has something out of this world (this has been so often used that it lost its true meaning though). I’ve always used Spiritual to describe him (and I am a very rational person). There is something in him that reminds me of the wise monks. I can’t describe how I feel about him but sometimes it feels just like he’s floating above humanity, he doesn’t belong to the common mortal world. We, humans, are made of good and bad like pettiness, jealousy, laziness, greed, … but when you listen to his interviews there is nothing as such. He doesn’t live his life to be loved but you can’t but love the person he is. Once you know him you’re like touched by Grace, he makes you wanting to become a better version of yourself (Gosh! I’m atheist). He is as innocent as a new born but as wise as an old soul.
@Ying Peng - You’re the third person talking about it. I’m very interested in knowing more. I’ve the same feeling as Wendy (and probably millions of us) as in, a year ago I didn’t even know him and now I feel like I need to protect him as if he was my own child. I look at him the same way I look at my own sweet child. That’s weird to me as I had never felt this before.
Now I’m worried about him reaching the 600 level as you said he might find it difficult to live in our materialistic world full of pettiness. He’s only 27 years old, what is he going to do if he reaches this level now? Retiring from this world and live like a hermit monk? He has so much to give and we owe him so much.
Also, he has haters, there are people to want to erase his legacy, do him harm. What are those peoples’ energy levels? How can you hate someone who transpires love. I’ll say it again he makes me think of an innocent new born with an old soul.
Last question, do you know which level the venerable Thich Nhat Hanh was? A friend of mine introduced me to him years ago and I watched an interview of him done by Oprah Winfreys. He sounded full of love.

I feel a lot of it comes down to how he skates. He doesn't do a jump just because he can, he incorporates them into his performance. He blends them into his performance, which is why his musicality is top tier.
Bcuz he has sincerely and genuine heart..it's portrayed on his skating. He not become champion to be a star/famous..it come naturally. People admire his hard working & good manners

Yuzuru cautiva al mundo, no hay nadie como él. Ya no se trata de técnica o medallas, o récords, se trata de la historia que nos está contando.
