    Nice, simple, straight forward explanation without a bunch of drama or whoopee stuff. Obviously done by a guy that has been around the block with these things a time or two and NOT some "keyboard kommando". Thanks, Rick!

    For all these years I thought only wizards and generations of eltro craftsman were allowed to open starters. Now that auto eletro shops are almost a thing of the past this information is "priceless" Thank You

    Thank you so much for this video. Now I know the right way to put the brushes in. I have always put the brushes in the the sring applying pressure. Your way will make it so much easier.

    I was needing the trick for getting the brush plate over the armature.
    I tried a sleeve, but your method looks easier.

    Excellent. Thank you! Only edit I might suggest is to show how to test for shorts, continuity etc. prior to the rebuild to ensure everything is useable.

    Thanks! After extensive searching for a new starter motor for my 1978 generac generator without finding one, I decided to try refurbish the bad one, and it worked! Took it out, put neg to post, pos to body, didn't move. Refurbished, did same test, and success! Thanks again.

    I have a SM-8227 starter from a Suzuki GR650 motorcycle, identical to the one in your video.
    When i disassembled it, a tiny 5mm rubber 'O' ring was loose inside.
    Anyone know where the tiny 'O' goes?
    The kits from Amazon have that tiny 'O' ring included too, so must go somewhere ??

    a very clear explanation , but in my case the magnets were loose
    and could see that two of them attract and those same repel with the other two ,
    so intercale four , so that I face each out otherwise ,
    ie N and S. but the engine does not work.
    with a tester I see as the impedance varies in the positive and negative terminals
    of motor turning it by hand , so q I think that the electric part is fine, and I'm doubt magnets position, it is not easy unstick
    can you help me

    • @GREENTHUNDER0
      @GREENTHUNDER0 4 роки тому

      Tom Collins what do you mean when you say align? What is the actual purpose of putting sharpie marks on the case?

    • @RicksElectrics
      @RicksElectrics  4 роки тому

      @@GREENTHUNDER0 what bike do you have? Most are "keyed" so that the magnets properly align with the orientation of the brush plate (so you wouldn't need the sharpie as Tim says). Many starters also have stamped in hashmark alignment marks but not all of them.

    Is it normal that the commutator is so thin? Mine is a bit thicker but it's also worn in a concave pattern. I have a lathe and was planning on cutting it down flat, but was worried it was gonna be too thin. Now that I see yours I think I'll go ahead with it. But is it normal that they're this thin or is that worn out too much?

    I have a 82 honda cm250 starter doesn't work. I know the solenoid works. But can't get starter off because of exhaust is in the way. Can't get last bolt off. Then they make bolt way too long. If brushes were replaced would it fix problem?

    • @RicksElectrics

      that could solve the problem, but can't be sure unless you open up the starter motor.

    Lol the manufacturer says "do not use Emory cloth or sandpaper on the commutator, I used some 800 grit then 2000grit and works like new now. Seems they just want you to buy a new OEM one

    I have a '83 V65 magna and the polarity seems to have reversed and instead of counter clockwise, its now clockwise. How can I reverse the polarity? Can I switch the caps so it goes in the correct direction? The starter motor is strong but the bike did sit for 12 years before I purchased it.

    Old post I know, how 'common' is it to not have a removable insulator but rather a fiberglass 'tape' just stuck to the inside of the housing?

    • @RicksElectrics
      @RicksElectrics  5 років тому

      Sounds like your starter has been "repaired" before without the proper pieces as that is def. not common.

    Is a motorcycle start fully engaged to the flywheel's teeth 100% time? i mean, a car's starter has mechanism to "push the gear out to engage to the flywheel", but a motorcycle's starter does not have those. Thanks!

    Hi I got problem with my starter motor for Honda vtr1000 I assembled it with brand new brushes and brush plate. Cleaned commutator area. There is not continuity between commutator and shaft. And is continuity between each all segments of commutator. So all is fine as should be according to manual. I got heavy sparking when going after connect battery ,shaft not moving. I checked this with second spare armature and is exactly this same problem. I tested any leaking to ground between positive brushes to housing or to shaft -no evidence of leaking on multimeter. What can be reason ? Is possible problem with armature but what sort? As I said tested leaking on commutator between it and shaft I even use other spare armature and tested it -all fine ,what can be reason of this heavy sparkling and not rotate of shaft?

    • @RicksElectrics
      @RicksElectrics  4 роки тому

      Hi Peter,
      Heavy sparking is indicative of a dead short. However, it is extremely difficult to diagnose this sort of problem over a message board. If you send us the starter motor we'd be happy to take it to the shop and diagnose it.

    Did I screw up my starter when I unknowingly did not mark it in the beginning stage prior to removal?

    • @RicksElectrics
      @RicksElectrics  Рік тому +1

      If it's been put back together already and is not running correctly, then yes the polarity could be off. Many starters do have alignment marks on them from the manufacturer and/or alignment tabs between the body and brush plates that can also be used. We recommend putting unique marks on both ends before opening an unfamiliar starter to be on the safe side.

      @@RicksElectrics Yep found it, had to get it cleand up really good to see it first however I can tell just by looking at it it will need new brushes. But I would like to a big thank you for responding. I have been going through a rough time here in my home town dealing with trying to parts from my local shops. They say one thing but I never hear back from them, I try calling back and its always a voicemail. I like to do it person so I know what I'm dealing with but, that's what I'm working with here. I take my chances on-line 🤬
