I bought an ESI 4000 a year ago because of this review and I absolutely love it. It's a great addition to my existing rack synths at my home studio. =)

I've had this exact unit for over a year, and just luv it. Yes, the menus take some getting use too. But as you stated, the sound quality is very warm. Since I tend to sample more keys and pad sounds. That works great for me. Initially, it was you TDS that inspired me to get a standalone sampler. And after researching, it was price, features, and EMU loyalty that gave this the edge. Great that your provide these reviews of items I actually own. Gives another perspective on those items. Keep em coming. Peace...

Love this video! Actually, the 4000 came before the 2000. They’re the exact same machine. As a matter of fact, many 2000 boots screens came from the factory saying ESI4000. They’re the same.

The OS is actually genius with the exception of the shambolic screen display,it just seems tricky if you dont use the sampler in depth, the more you use it and the more you exclusively use it, the better the OS becomes, no internal resampling is a bit of a badger but easy enough to rectify if you are using a computer, SMDI is a great feature, and lots of live options are available thanks to the trigger buttons and by using the jog wheel to modulate filters, fx etc by selecting zones. For anyone thinking of using this sampler the best thing I could recommend is throwing your zip/floppy drive in the bin and install a CF card reader for silent and safe saving. Also upgrading the RAM is easy and cheap nowadays, full RAM gives you over 12 minutes of sampling time at 48000khz through the spdif input. Savage good sound quality out of the wee beast too.

The EMU E5000 Ultra was my very first sampler....even before my MPC or SP1200....let alone the Ensoniq EPS 16+(which is recent and you helped turn me on to them thank you)....I couldn’t for the life of me figure it out until I read the manual cover to cover...twice. Once I got the Ensoniq I finally discovered why people love them. By the time I’ve made one sample and keymapped it in the emu I’ve made 4 complete instruments in the EPS....and it’s crazy how a sampler made in 1989 has FAR better effects than one made in the early 2000’s. You’re right about the sound though. I often use the Emu as a repository for sounds from the other samplers to run in multi mode, in order to free them up for more sampling!

Hi... I enjoyed watching your esi video. You really get to a lot of important details in your initial thoughts videos. Cool stuff. You might want to recheck the chronology that you mentioned. I am almost positive that it's 32, 4000, then 2000, unless a turbo version came after 2000. I got 2000 brand new in 2000 and I think the menu system it has is a bit rigid but it grew on me. Shortcut buttons when in general editing modes are very useful for speed.

The ESI-32 has a max of 32mb of ram. If you upgrade the ESI-32 with version 3.0 or higher (you get all the filters found in later units). However I agree that these samplers are tricky to get used too..

I've been thinking of dropping mine because an E6400 Ultra with 100 gig HD has popped up on Craigslist recently, but if I can find an external SCSI HD for my ESI, I can live without the resampling and Z-plane filters.

I have some issues with floppy in my ESI 4000. I've replaced the original ZIP drive which was broken down by the previous owner with a regular FDD 1.44 MB. When I turn the power on the floppy rotates but doesn't "mount" it in the sampler. Any ideas?

    • @TheDaydreamSound

I had that problem with my ZipDrive. I had the rack on an angle when I set it flat it sorted out that problem but If I were you I would check the connections to see if they're seated correctly to the motherboard and the drive and use some contact spray and compressed air to clean the contacts.

+Riva Lima very easy to sample , you dont have to place or split zones or truncate samples since it does it automatically (the functions are all entered in sample management number 5 pages) , just press sample management then 5 , it shows the input monitor and press the right cursor arrow twice , on that page set the amount of keyrange that you want the esi to adress for each new sample ,press escape , now press 5 again to monitor your inputs and the material you want to sample , press 8 to start
sampling and escape to stop sampling , once sampling done press 0 to select next new sample slot otherwise it will
erase the last sample with a new one ,then save it as a bank since that includes all samples and presets in memory and lets you load combine presets seperate from several banks later on , i have a load of samplers including akai , ppg , yamaha , ensoniq and emu and the esi , asr and su700 are the quickest to get around no mather what others tell you

+TheDaydreamSound interesting. I just purchased an ESi 4000 turbo after watching some of your channel. Some have claimed that the ESi 2000 has cheaper a/d converters than the rest of the range. Even if that is so, cheaper isn't always worse when it comes to a/d. The Akai s2000 is a budget s3000xl but I love the sound of the converters and own several of these of them! Great channel there just isn't enough info on some of these lesser know machines. keep it up!

Menu diving ain't so bad once you learn the shortcuts......that's where people tend to differ, some people continue riding the jog dial while others learn to punch in what they want straight away.....like say I want to cut a loop, I just work out what the length for the tempo is in seconds, covert that to samples and punch it in.....whereas I see some people prefer to wear out the jog dial like they are cracking a safe all day long.

you can truncate & place samples across a keyboard . i.e. so you might truncate (chop) a sample & place it on a key & repeat for the others. if you make the preset monophonic / or turn solo mode on it would act like a mute group in that only one sample could play at a time & hitting another key would interrupt the sample to play the next etc etc. the actual chopping would be different & longer to do than on MPCs
