  • The tool cabinet where I store hand tools for forging receives a lot of questions. Today I thought we would take a closer look at how the cabinet and drawers are constructed as well as what tools, punches, chisels, carving tools, drifts, rivet header etc, are stored in the cabinet. Remember, this is a blacksmiths tool cabinet it isn't fine woodworking

Storage solutions are really important for a shop. I made some small shelves for my various abrasives. It’s amazing how something so simple can make the shop feel so much cleaner.

Looks like the back panel of the cabinet is a piece of salvaged / repurposed plywood judging by the shallow saw kerfs. Exactly what l'ld expect to see in a homesteader's place. Nothing goes to waste. I was really glad to hear you mention the handles. You had put out that handle challenge around the time l subscribed to your channel. I think you had something like 20,000 subscribers at the time. It's really something to have watched how your channel has grown, your shop as well. Thank you for sharing.

I got a bunch of like questions about my mini-baler I made. "No I don't have plans, it was just made to what size bales I wanted it to put out." I even put up a video like this with the measurements and they still asked for plans. The last request was "will you build us one, my husband and myself are not that handy." So I just mailed them mine, as I really didn't use it that much. Now I'll just send folks to them.

John, I really like the design of that cabinet, having the drawer bottoms extend out as the runners. In this case, it isn't just about being inexpensive and fast, but it is an excellent way of providing strong drawers (lots of weight in each drawer), without taking up a lot of space, and having a strong system without spending 10X more on drawer slides. A very useful item indeed. If only I had enough floor space for something like that, I would build one too. I may use that design in some other places though.

Pretty much the same method I used in my woodworking shop for all the hand tools. I did glue a strip of countertop laminate to each drawer to make it slicker and much easier to pull out when the tools weigh it down.

Smart design making the bottom take all the weight to the slides, avoids the common problem of a heavy loaded drawer tearing the bottom out of the dadoed sides.

I’ve been told that from now on, my hobbies and finding ones I like are my only job. To better my quality of life…. It sounds great on paper, but trying to find new hobbies I can do and that I like is a whole different story. Not to mention cost. Im trying to find a watchmaker’s bench or even a roll top desk with lots of drawers under the top, to use as an indoor workbench fit small wood projects and carving and leatherwork. I do have a rather small single burner propane forge and a piece of railroad track for an anvil but I need to find a way to either make a press or power hammer. Eventually… just like a belt grinder. I like your tool cabinet.

As many cabinets as I have tossed together over the years I never thought of using the bottom for a runner sometimes common since just smacks you on the head not likely but if I build another one I'll remember that and you

9:27 One tip: you should place the top plywood board on top of the side walls instead of in between them. This gives you a much sturdier structure as the top board's grains aren't subjected to shearing stresses, which would split the plywood board along the grain in the long run. Also, it reduces central bowing of the board as it's better supported from three sides (side walls and back wall).

Thanks for sharing, always good to see how someone else tackles a storage problem. I like how you use whatever you have around to fit the space and whatever you want to store. If you ever decide to add some roller bearing slides I think it wouldn't be too hard to upgrade that cabinet. Nice simple cabinet, I bet you could make something similar to hang on a wall also.

I’ve been trying ti get into smithing for a hot minute now but I don’t have the means to get an anvil or a good beam to substitute…I do however have old weight plates which I’ve used already to hammer on for some welding projects, i was wondering if it’s a good idea to just take one and chuck it in top of a log to actually use it as a proper substitute anvil
