Brother ScanNCut Tips & Tricks - Direct Cut vs Scan to Cut Data - Joy to the World by Stampin’ Up!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 сер 2024
- In this Brother ScanNCut Tips and Tricks tutorial you will learn the how to use Direct Cut and Scan to Cut Data features of the SDX125. Most of these features are available in any model of ScanNCut you are using. Throughout the Brother Scan and Cut tutorial, I compared the capabilities and limitations of each feature. Direct Cut is used to cut stamped images or patterned paper. You can create an offset or outline distance and cut additional layers by switching out the paper on the mat. Scan to Cut Data is used when you want to save the outline or the inside and outside lines of the stamped image or patterned paper you are scanning. Once you save the cutting data to your machine and then retrieve the file, you have a lot of options. You can edit out the parts you don’t want. You can group parts, resize the cutting lines. In the SDX models, you can also create offsets for both the inside and outside lines when you are using Scan to Cut Data.

I just launched another course: Canvas Workspace A to Z. It contains over 7 hours of educational videos targeted at helping you master software skills. You already know how to cut and draw if you have taken my other ScanNCut courses. Therefore, I focused this course on the design process and how to work with the tools available to you. Why reinvent the wheel? There are thousands of SVGs available to you. I share how to obtain them and work with them so that you can customize your cutting files. Coupons for my latest course and other courses are listed below. While the coupons expire, the courses on Udemy never expire.
Still binge watching! Thank you for your tutorials.
Kim you have a gift of teaching! Thanks so much!
Love love love love love love love!
So I take it you like this. LOL. Thanks for your enthusiasm.
Still with you ❤ learn something everytime I watch your videos.
Right on! That comment was directed at YOU. I knew you are one of my Crafty Friends who watch the whole video. Thanks.
Great Video! Remember those little red birds from the Paper Pumpkin kit last year? Well, I remembered that you scanned those little birds to have more but I didn't do it right then. Yesterday I found the master negative space red birds & I used scan to cut data to save them to my machine & now I have tons of little red birds. However, I was not certain of what I was doing and why. I got the result but this video cleared it all up. Such great instructions!! Thank you
Thanks Cindy! So many times we figure something out and then we are left with more questions than answers. I’m glad you figured it out now. I loved those little birds and need to pull out any leftovers soon. It’s time to start putting birds on everything again.
I had NO IDEA about the Auto Layout feature! Game changer!!! Thanks lady :). Always love your tutorials. ☺️
There are so many features on this machine that makes our lives easier. I am glad you like my tutorials. Thanks.
I followed your instructions to a T. But after I retrieved the data , the cut area became smaller. I did it a couple of times with the same result. Darn machine! That being said your tutorials are great. You have helped me so much. And I thank you.
Paula, I have a habit of moving things away from the sides of the mat. Less weirdness. LOL. I am glad you could follow along and I hope it eventually works the same way as it did for me.
Perfect timing, Kim! I received my Paper Pumpkin box and immediately thought about using my ScanNCut to make more wreaths, but I wanted more help on the best way to do it, especially getting the hole in the middle. I'm also looking forward to making bigger wreaths using Canvas Workspace.
Great! I’m glad this was perfect timing. I made the entire sheet after the video so I’m good to go for a while.
@@PaperedChef it’s so perfect for mass production!
Just found your video and I'm so happy! Thanks so much for showing how to use my SDX machine! And using the Paper Pumpkin kit is a bonus; awesome! Mahalo nui!
I was in Hawaii in May! Loved it! You are very welcome Zeny! So many more tutorials here so please check out my Playlists.
Another great tutorial - I love cutting inside and outside (like the wreaths) - thanks Kim for all your sharing!!
Great Cheryl! I’m glad this is something that not only I’m obsessed with.
I always like watching your show and I like when you said "Wow your mat is dirty, yea my mat is dirty which shows that I been using them for a long time". That just made me laugh and thank you for your honesty
You know our mats are well loved. LOL. I'm glad I made you laugh.
I will always be fascinated by your use of brother scan and cut.Nice job!
Thanks Melanie. I really love using it to its fullest potential.
Another winning video! I always learn (or relearn) a tip, trick, or technique from you!
Thanks Kim! I didn’t plan that messed up cut but it sure was a good teaching tool. I just roll with it and I’m glad you learned something new.
Another great tutorial! Love the refresher points. It's amazing how many ideas you have and your love of crafting. Hugs
Thanks Sue, Oh yes, I totally LOVE making and sharing paper crafts. It is so much fun. Glad you are watching.
Fabulous video!
Thanks, I appreciate you watching.
Great video Kim. You cleared up a ton of questions I had!
Great. I actually base my longer videos on questions. I feel like if I am being asked something a lot, then it is time to create a tutorial on the topic.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!! I learn so much from your videos. I am looking forward to your course.
Awesome. Thanks for signing up for the course. I know you will see things in a different way by the time you are done with it.
Love this tutorial ❤ 😍 💕
Thanks, I can't wait to see which types of Paper Pumpkin Christmas Kits come out this coming Holiday Season.
Love your tutorials. So helpful. I also do Stampin Up Paper Pumpkin so this was super valuable!!
Thanks for watching Sherry. It’s great that we have amazing Stampin’ Up! products to use with this awesome machine. The best of both worlds for sure!
Hi Kim, thank you for explaining things in easy terms. Due to my health problems I take Morphine based medication and information gets lost but i watched this a hour or 2 ago and the information is still in my brain. I look forward to learning more via your Udemy course. Thank you for helping me. Loves and Hugs xxx
That is good to hear Wendy. I repeat myself a lot so that the concepts become second nature to my viewers. I am glad you got all this. You can always refer back to it again easily if you save the videos to a play list.
Thank you Kim I will have to get a new note book just for the course. Thank you xxx
Love your videos so informative
Thank you so much you are excellent and amazing I will use your lands and I like giving credit where credit is due ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I'll be taking your class
I am a new subscriber and just signed up for two classes. I am hoping to learn how to use my Scan n Cut without tears!
Thanks Lynn. You will find that I delve way deeper into topics in my classes than I do on UA-cam because I have time to build skills a little at a time during a long course.
Thanks Kim.....great as usual.....
Thanks Mary. Glad you are watching.
Great tutorial! Thanks so much.
Thanks again. I'm glad you are always watching.
Love your ideas and really appreciate all the hints you share.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching Shirley!
Great video. Thank you. Very jealous of the DX’s ability to do an inside and inside offset at the same time. I was doing some Scan to Cut Data today and had to use Canvas to get an offset. Luckily I only needed an outside offset.
Lesley, I know what you mean. I love being able to do a lot on the machine without having to run back and forth to my laptop in another room. Still, my CM350 cuts out stamped images better so I’m grateful for that. Thanks for watching.
Love, love, LOVE THIS. 😍🥰😍🥰
Great, I love your enthusiasm! Thanks for watching.
I just signed up! I’m excited!!
Great! You will learn things I’ve never shown on UA-cam before. I hope you like it. Thanks for watching.
WOW.. love all your tutorials Kim. I am fairly new to the ScanNcut machine and to Stampin Up , just getting into this type of craft since about June. I love the versatility of using both of these products in conjunction with one another. Your videos are so helpful, you are a natural. I have enrolled in the A to Z course and loving it. I don't see a link to the other courses on here so you will benefit, wondering if because I am in Canada it doesn't show up on UA-cam??
Thanks Bonnie. I appreciate your comment and vote of confidence. Here is where I keep my coupons which I am only able to generate a couple of times each month. I generated new ones for November. They will definitely work in Canada although the price may be a little different. thepaperedchef.com/brother-scanncut-courses
Great tutorial
Thanks Katherine! I appreciate that.
Thank you I got it A to Z
Great Janet. I hope you like creating the projects in the course. They are very different than what you see on UA-cam.
Thank you Kim for your wonderful gift to us of your time and talent! I have learned more about how to use my machine from you than anyone! And I am now back into Stampin Up as well LOL I have a question. At times when I am doing a Direct Cut, the machine will choose the outline BUT it will also pick up some areas in the center of the design to cut. I give my objects a .04 edge and tell the machine to ignore object size but it still picks up the inside of the object. Any suggestions? Thank you so much in advance.
Hi Mary, if that keeps happening, simply draw a line around it with a pencil. Here is a video which illustrates the "Pencil Trick." ua-cam.com/video/6CK9JuCEWps/v-deo.html
@@PaperedChef Thank you!!!
Yes, I want to see the magic!
LOL! This is just what we were chatting about.
Where are the links you talk about...new to all of this but loving what I’m seeing here

Hi, just found your channel yesterday, and I'm hooked 😍you explain so well and I love your recaps. I want to make my own design stencils, cut stamped images, enlarge, emboss & lot more I'm sure but I'm only half way thru your playlist 🤣🤣. I'm looking at the Scan & Cut DX SDX1000, would you recommend this ? Not all models available in Europe, appreciate any advise. I'm off now to get a coffee and continue on your playlist
Sorry that I missed your email. There is very little difference between the DX models. Anyone is fine. The comparisons between models are on the Brother site. There are a few differences in the number of installed images, ability to read certain files and a few features. If you are starting out, the features you need would come in that model. Thanks for watching and it takes me a long time to see all of the comments here. I have a group where you can also ask questions and other help answer too. facebook.com/groups/paperedchefscanncut
Talk about good timing!
Yes, you were not the only one wondering about this for sure.
Wonderful video! Loads of information. 🎃
I'm glad you like these projects. Thanks Sheila!
Great video. I learned alot. I don't see a link to your course
Evie, here is a link to all of my ScanNCut courses and this is where I post coupons a couple of times a month. thepaperedchef.com/brother-scanncut-courses
What would you use the “ALL LINES” selection for?
Such an amazing tutorial ! I learnt creative ways to use my scan and cut. Thank you! My husband got me a scan and cut yesterday and I already tried direct cut but I would love to know how to use the canvas workspace. I am unable to get to the course link from the description , maybe I am not seeing it right. Can you tell me how to get to the course for canvas workspace ?
Thanks Veena, I’m glad you like using your new toy and Crafting Buddy! Here is a list of all of my courses with links. On the bottom left of my site, you can also sign up for Blog Updates to be notified of my tutorials. thepaperedchef.com/brother-scanncut-courses
I got the message to set it to level 2 when I used painters tapp and the tape was stuck on the blade. I saw it after I removed it when I was done for night.
I love your videos. Is there a way to cur heat transfer with out the transfer plastic on the vinyl. I want it stand it with permanent ink
I just cut the regular vinyl and iron on material. I haven’t cut that vinyl but I do turn on my Half Cut setting which precisely leaves the backing on my sticker vinyl while cutting my sticker out cleanly. I hope that helps. Search for your topic and I’m sure others have cut it.
Hi
I am fairly new to crafting and will shortly receive my Brother ScanNCut SDX2200D Disney.
I cant wait to be able to use it as I have been fascinated by your videos using your machine.
I am mainly a card maker who wants to make journals and dabbles with various 3D projects.
I have a huge stash of various 12 x 12 pads of both patterned and plain papers which I cut down.
More recently I have purchased some digital images which are also based on 12 x 12 which I have to resize as my printer will only print International A4. So whilst I am working on my husband to by me a new printer.
Can you help with a question? Will I be able to scan in 12 x 12 papers using my scan n cut and save to my pc for resizing and printing?
Apologies if you have already answered this before.
Marjorie Kay
Oh yes, you can scan any images on your papers and then import the scan into Canvas Workspace. There, you can resize it.
Hi Kim I have a SDX125 can I use any of the brother mats in the machine or do I have to use the mats that are specifically made for the SDX? Thank you so much for all your great tutorials too.
Jill, the mats are not interchangeable. This is the one you need for the SDX. SDX Cutting Mat: amzn.to/2CzbDuV
Hi, Kim....I tried to cut the rocking horse image which is one that comes in the scan n cut, but it cut the horses saddle out the whole way and his mane completely off. What happened? I was cutting him for on a card so the size I used was 1.50.
Vine, if it fell apart like that, try changing the blade depth. If you can't set the depth, then lower the pressure. Then, you can try again. Don't give up. Try different papers as well.
Where is the canvas workspace course and the coupon? I don’t see any links.
Hi L, my coupons expired and I can only generate them a couple of times a month. Still, there are special rates at Udemy so please use ANY of the links on my web site to enroll. You can also find introductory videos there explaining what each course is about. Thanks, Kim thepaperedchef.com/brother-scanncut-courses
Can you tell me why my scan and cut trys to cut the inside even when I have just the outside only lines
Yes, it is because the lines are not enclosed. Use a pencil or dark painter's tape to close the "gaps" so that the ScanNCut recognizes only the outside of each object.
So wait... since you can’t ungroup a saved file, you can’t go later and remove the inner circle? Just making sure I understand. (In that case, I would probably want to make two files.)
That is true but you would probably just be using Direct Cut on a sheet of stamped images if you don’t want the inner circle. In that case, you would be cutting a fresh batch each time.
Hi Kim - thanks SO MUCH for this. With "Auto Layout" I know you said it's on the machine. Does Canvas also have a similar function?
It has alignment tools which you can use to align and distribute objects but nothing as "COOL" as the AutoLayout feature. Thanks Ted!
@@PaperedChef Thanks for answering! :)
I would like an honest which machine is better older one or the DX? I wouldn't mind using the computer to do my offsets at all.
Well, I happened to receive the greatest CM350 of all time while I had a DUD when it came to my SDX125. So, each machine has a personality and my SDX is finally getting better. There used to be such a big price difference between the two and so I didn’t think the upgrade was worth it. Now, the SDX125 is much less expensive so if you don’t want to mess with blade depth, you like that it is wirelessly activated already, you like that it’s quiet, and you want to cut all kinds of materials, then try this model. Brother ScanNCut SDX125E: amzn.to/30fojAU
I have never used a scan and cut, can this be done on a cricket
The Cricut doesn’t scan bit you can use a Print and Cut feature that they have.
@@PaperedChef so would you suggest a scan N Cut machine. What is a good one and affordable to purchase? I am terrible about having to have all the tools for crafting. It gets expensive as you know. Lol. Is the scan N Cut worth the money to you for all it does.
I want to buy me a scan n cut. What machine do you recommend?
Hi Ida, this is pretty much the industry standard right now. You will be able to cut paper, vinyl and other materials. You will be able to scan and cut patterned paper and stamped images. You will also be able to draw with it. Brother ScanNCut SDX125E: amzn.to/30fojAU
Haven't had my cricut long, so don't know what all it does
Karen, you will get used to your machine. Not to worry. It takes practice. This tutorial is about the Brother ScanNCut, not the Cricut.
How often do you change your cutting blade? My cut outs seem to be a bit jagged.
Marilyn, in this video, I show you how to sharpen your blade to make it last longer and how to clean your blade holder. You can take out your blade and replace it by opening up the blade holder. I rarely change my blades considering how often I use them. Maybe every few months. I really don't keep track. ua-cam.com/video/tjuhKAsURIc/v-deo.html
Thank you very much, I cleaned my blade and holder it was dirty!
