~ So, story time.. It was several weeks before Christmas when my aunt said she didn't want her betta anymore.. So I went to her house to get him.. Her house was really cold (some ppl just like cold houses), and the betta was in a 1 gallon bowl with some crystals.. No plants, or any thing like that.. And she said he wasn't eating.. ~ I read that being too cold can make a betta not want to eat.. So, I took the betta home at that moment, and I set up one of my empty 5 gallon tanks - I use well water, so it has always been okay for my fish I've cared for - it never seemed to bother them.. ~ I placed some pothos plant stems in the aquarium, letting the leafy part hang out over the tank.. And I used a plastic cup to acclimate him to the new water temp.. I live in the southern states of US, where the winters aren't very cold as they are up north, and because of this, my room stays fairly warm, which keeps the betta's water around 76°F.. I have a thermometer that I use to keep track of the water temp as well.. It also lets me match the temp of any new water going into the tank to the temp of the tank water.. Bettas are said to like temps between 75 and 80°F. So, I don't need a heater for him. ~ I also got one of my small, aquarium sponge filters (not home made, the filter was bought online).. and I placed it in one corner of the tank on a very gentle flow so that the flow circulation doesn't bother him... ~ I placed some of the right amount of stress-coat in the tank to help him relax.. Three days later after he'd had time to relax into his new home, he was interested in eating again, and he had built a bubble nest around the same time in one corner, which was very unexpected for me to see so soon. He also likes to swim around the pothos roots and even uses them for a bed. He's a red veil-tail, so I named him Coral.. He's a sweet and very curious boy. When I come up to the tank, he likes to come to the front to see what I'm doing and greet me. I've grown very fond of him. 😊
Would love to see a video on your long-term thoughts on betta sororities. There's plenty of videos talking about how to do it, and showing the setup, but they all seem to be projects, rather than a permanent setup.
Thank you for this very informational video! I am going to be getting another betta soon, after about 6 years of not having one, and so I'm brushing up on my betta care knowledge to be even better this time around 😊
I just rescued a long tail female Betta and named her Splash! I'm having her on a beautiful 10 gallon aquarium for her alone. Thanks for your video it helps me remember to care for her correctly
Fish keepers my name is Sean from Austin tropicals and I’m three months in of this hobby is very interesting to learn more things about a hobby that I am doing thank you for all the education stuff that you teach me
I feel like 50% weekly is a bit too much and not often enough. Whenever I set up a new aquarium i always do 20% water changes daily until there are no nitrites then 20% water changes weekly to maintain nitrates at a low level. Then once nitrates get rlly low, like barely any nitrates present then i do monthly water changes.
😂 bruh my betta loves flying into the stream. I turned it down but when I saw her continuously trying to swim into it so I turned it up a little bit. I have a little bubble machine in the corner and she’s always in that corner trying to swim at it
Can I put my plakat betta with angle or serpae tetra because this fish nipping my half moon betta so I want to know they fish can live with plakat betta?
I went to your website and saw mystery box sale, when you have a sorority sale and they all live in the same tank is there a benefit to doing that? I mean not only having a companion buy if your breeding them as well???
It depends how long I’m gone! When I don’t have fry or fish growing out I can go for up to 5-7 days just fasting my adults. If I have fry or I’m going away longer then that, I have a friend come over and feed. I also always have my lights on timers, so I don’t have to worry about those
Just depends how large it is. I wouldn’t recommend you leave it pressed against any filter media. Tank with built in filter compartments in the back work great for sticking a heater in that portion
@@sandraschwan358 The half moon female betta (named Ruby) and the 14 black neon tetras (the Tankmob) combo has since worked out well. So i moved them into a 36 bow and theyre all doing fine. I tried adding another female betta, but they were still taking turns chasing each other around after 5 days, so the newbie went back to the store. Wanted to put another centerpiece fish in w Ruby and the T-Mob, but after consecutively trying 2 new tankmates, she kept hiding from them. Im afraid she sees most other fish as bettas, so im just going to let her be with the tankmob since theyre already a proven good combo. Your female betta sorority tanks were quite well done and inspiring, but like you said, it depends on the bettas personalities, and success isn't guaranteed. I havent checked your channel in a while, but ill do so soon. I hope youve continued to put up videos. Can i suggest you post one which be a narration-free, 30 minute long, tank-wide shot of one of your sororities? Itd be a good chance for your viewers to virtually gaze upon your tank, which is what this hobby is ultimately about: chilling out to the watching of beautiful fish. Gettin' ya gaze on."
Im from the Pacific Northwest as well! I have a 10 Gallon Aquarium with 6 Zebra Danios and a Female Betta. Is this overstocked? Im debating on whether to get another tank but ill have to buy a desk....
It’s been a year so you probably still don’t need the info but sharing in case someone sees and learns something. Two zebra danios per gallon, so they take 3 gallons. 10-3= 7 gallons. Let’s say 2 gallons for substrate and decor, leaving 5 gallons for the betta. Seems like it will work but cannot add any other fish.
Obviously not PNW, but I can try answering a few questions! I've been keeping Bettas for 4 years now and have done a lot of research into their care and origins :]
Is a 15g suitable for a single betta with no tank mates? I plan to aquascape to break up the space. Have watched so many videos, and I can’t find an answer
i kept my first betta fish ina bowl, i had him for about 4yrs before he did pass, i would feed him (Tetra Betta-BettaMin) twice 3-4 pellets in the morning & another 3-4 pellets before bed, and i would clean his bowl every 4-5 days , and i would make sure too not (shock) dump all the dirty water out, i would leave at least 2-3 fl oz of his dirty water (with the fish in there) like in a cup ) so that way , so that way the fish wouldn't struggle adjusting to the new water, i mean yes the bowl isnt fully clean but at least it doesnt look dirty just slightly murky
Heyy, I know this vid was 2 years ago, but I'm planning on adopting a Betta. I want to save one of the poor lethargic little guys from petco and give him a better life. Do you recommend anything for switching them out of the old pet store water and into the new? Is it possible to shock them or is it best to just put him right in there? I don't want to do anything to stress out little Fishington.
They recommend to float them in their store container at top of the tank for a bit then add some tank water for a bit then release. So Temps and water composition are changed more gradually
Wha! I’ve had so many things be amazing under $15. I live by my $10 aqueon tanks. Lasted me years, great for my breeding projects. And most of my filters have been in that range too, especially sponges.
Smaller size means they can constantly see their own reflection a 5 gallon tank will not cause that as bad a smaller tank means more water changes 5 gallons minimum for long finned 10 gallons or more for plakats. A 2.5 is not enough try a sponge filter in a 5 gallon tank so its not so stressed bettas swim alot they love space.
You’ve tried all sizes? You must have a lot of fish tanks. 🤔 You’re going to be having to work hard to keeping water quality up in that tiny tank. Is your tank cycled? Do you have an API Master Test kit to check water quality? If not I highly suggest you get one. Test strips are notoriously inaccurate. I have 3 bettas, one in a 12 gallon, one in a 5.5 and one in a 35 gallon. They all seem pretty happy. If it doesn’t bother you too have to work harder to maintain, and he doesn’t mind the cramped quarters, then carry on. 🙂
@@GR34SRR yes i read it properly i know how to read you bimbo and i gave my answer a 2.5 gallon tank even if(the betta is less stressed) is not large enough most likely the betta is stressed by the flow of the filter the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM is 5 gallons for a long finned betta.
