Awesome--Very glad to hear when a video is useful. Condolences for your loss, but I'm sure you will enjoy your inherited lathe, and using it will be a great way to connect with your lost loved one. I feel my dad looking over my shoulder every time I use one of his old tools.
Thanks for taking the time to make the vid Rick, mine also has the FW/Off/REV switch mounted on top of the headstock cover in the same position as yours. One thing that confuses me is once the pin is pulled on the bull gear and is disconnected from the pulley (which now spins freely on the spindle).....what is providing the power to the gear train if the disconnected pulley is free spinning? Will have to look but am assuming the small gear on the left side of the pulley is also interlocked to the pulley. I have only had the lathe for less than a week so just now getting familar with my new date :)
Yes, the bull gear should be disconnected from the pulley in-line when you pull the pin; it will still be connected through the back gear assembly once you raise that in place. The reason is that the small gear to the left of the pulley (facing the machine) should still be locked to the pulley. If that one is spinning freely, something is wrong. If it is secured correctly, then the transfer of power should flow from the motor, through the pulleys, to the small gear to the left, down to the back gear assembly (which you raise in place using the lever), and through to the bull gear, which in turn drives the spindle. Make sense?
Yep, without walking out to the shop last night I had decided the small gear to the left of the pulley HAD TO be connected to the pulley in some manner for the gear train to work. Appreciate the vid. Always check with Clausing for manuals...they still have a lot archived :)
Would like to see the whole thing, not many vids of these on the Tube. I wanted a steady rest & milling attachment with it! Some collets woulda been nice as well! LOL
I recently inherited an Atlas 10", TH42, and the back gears will not stay engaged. Yes, the pin is pulled. I fully engage the back gears, but they disengage almost immediately (but gently...) when I start the machine. I understand that you used to have a 10", and wonder if you might know what the solution is.
Hello! I don't have a solution off the top of my head, but perhaps you could post a video showing the problem you are experiencing? I have never experienced the problem you describe, but I am certain someone else in UA-cam land will have experienced it. Please send a link if you do post a video.
@@RickRose Thanks for the suggestion, Rick. Here's the link to a short video made with my daughter's help that shows the problem. ua-cam.com/video/YtoQhj7G644/v-deo.html I hope you or somebody else knows how to fix!
Greetings. I have the same lathe and my original Furnas reverse switch just went out. I just bought a new one similar to yours manufactured by Relay and Control Corp. I’m struggling with the wiring. Any help would be appreciated, I have the original 1/2 hp single phase motor with 4 leads .
I remember last time I looked inside that switch it was confusing to me. I'll take a look again tomorrow and see if I can get a good photograph or something. It may not help because I'm certain the cord is not original, so the color coding may be different.
Hello! I believe I just bought the same Atlas 12" commercial under cabinet drive lathe that you have. I was wondering how those adjustable drive belts were serving you. That is one thing that needs replaced in this lathe, otherwise I think it's about as good a shape as I could ask for. Apparently it sat in the back of a shop for decades collecting dust rarely used. I even got the model specific steady rest to go with it. Cheers!
Sounds like you got a nice score! The link belts work alright, but I do wish I had real belts. I'm just too lazy to tear the whole headstock down. Since they need tightening anyway I might try the trick I heard about of splicing a belt with super glue.
@@RickRose Hi Rick! I have a chance to buy a 6" Atlas/Craftsman 101.07301 Lathe, is 300 bucks a decent deal? It runs quietly, Has 3 & 4 jaw chuck and some old time tooling, no change gears tho. Seems to be in decent shape, just needs cleaned up and painted. What do you think? Same guy I bought the 12" commercial has it.
@@LordHumungus I believe at that price you could get your money back out of it if you decide you don't like it. Could make a nice combo with the 12. Good luck!
@@orlandowiltshire1228 Hello I do not know the letter. It is what I found at Harbor Freight, honestly. If I find a letter designation once home I will relay it.
Carter Open Gear Grease replaces the keystone 122 for your gear lubricant. It comes in a caulking tube, and is not expensive at all.
Thanks for the information!
After a year of periodically cleaning and messing with my lathe I finally figured it out, then I found a video explaining it... good video though!
That's how it works sometimes. Sorry you didn't find it sooner, but thanks for the comment. Happy New Year!
Thanks for making this video. I just got my first (working) lathe, the Atlas 12", and even with the manual the back gear operation wasn't very clear!
Thanks for this, I'm going to look at a lathe like this today, very helpful to know how to operate the back gears.
Oh man thank you. I just inherited the exact lathe. And my switch is mounted exactly like yours.

Yeah, it has kind of become a memorial of mine. I can tell my Uncle is watching too.
Great job !! 🤗

Based on your pulley you have the exact machine as me (under drive cabinet lathe with chip pan) correct?
Yes, I should pan out to show the whole thing. I'm jealous, though. Yours is in better shape and better equipped. Want to trade?

I can’t pull the black knob out on back gear or move assembly, has anyone had this problem?
Does it not move at all? I've only had this one machine, so I haven't experienced that problem. I hope someone can chime in here to help.
