Just finished restoration on a craftsman 101.07403. Your series of videos were vital in my project and provided me with a better understanding of the machine. Hats off to you Mr. Pete. Your one outstanding shop teacher. Ordering your flash drive series on this lathe this week.

I just purchased one of these old lathes for general hobby use. I'm in the process of disassembly for cleaning, lubrication, etc and this thing is TIGHT. Appears to have very little usage over the years. based on how little wear I see. I wanted to take the opportunity to THANK YOU for this video series as it's come in extremely useful, not only to learn how to maintain, but also to learn how the lathe works. I grew up and went to school to be a machinest and at the tail end of my schooling, we got into CNC machining and programming. After I graduated I found a job at a shop where I became a mechanic rather than a machinest. That's been over 30 years ago, and I have been wanting a lathe for my own shop/hobby use at home. Now I have one, and also have the knowledge of how it works. Great video set, well put together, well explained. A refresher for me since I've been out of it for so long. Again, thanks.

I very much enjoy watching all of your instructional videos before starting work in my manual shop....You remind me of my collage shop teacher 42+ years ago....At the time I took him mildly serious BUT in hindsight I value his determination for safe, careful, correct machining....a difficult job for my shop teacher at that time and far more difficult today...Thank You for your determination....jm

I have an older Atlas 10d made in 1937, babbitt bearings and change gears, 48 inch bed. I love the old lathe, for sure. I have since purchased a more modern lathe, and the Atlas has entered "semi-retirement". It has done it's work and now deserves to take it easy. It was getting that lathe that led me to your videos, the first one being "Atlas lathe 4 jaw chuck demo"...have been a fan ever since, and have learned so much from you in the years that have gone by. Thanks again, Mr. Pete.

MrPete, I just got an old Atlas 10" up and running yesterday. Probably hasn't been used for over 40 years. I got it from a friend for free, he got it from an old neighbor that was moving (he hadn't used if for years either) he had it sitting in his garage for at least 10 years, it sat in mine for probably 15 or so. I figured it was finally time to get it working and maybe sell it. I had to make a platform for it as it was just the lathe in one piece and the motor assembly in another. Once it was mounted, I tried to pick up the "correct" belts but the motor belt was way too big (43") and I didn't feel like tearing the head end apart. Picked up a link belt from HF, my neighbor had a smaller belt to use on the motor. The link belts are like cheating! After pulling, cleaning and lubing the change gears, the old bugger worked like a charm! Tore down the compound slide, cleaned and lubed it following your video on the same topic. The cross slide is next. The slides and ways are surprisingly tight, very little lash. I've pretty much decided to keep the old gal and put it to use. Now, just need to get a set of change gears, an AXA QCTP, some tooling and maybe a 3 jaw. For a free lathe, it sure adds up quickly! Love your videos, you remind me of an machinist I knew many years ago. Old school job shop guy, even as a kid sweeping up around the place I learned something from him every day.

I bought my first linked belt for a MYFORD SUPER 7 lathe. Since that time, I have replaced all of my many "V" belts with link belt. I cannot find any fault with these linked belts. Well, the price is a little high but not high enough to put me off.. I like your easy relaxed way of presenting. I appreciate you observations on our changing times. Great series! I would like to add the importance of not over tightening the oiler screw in the pulley on the spindle shaft. That would lock the pulley assembly to the shaft and not allow it to free spin as it should. Your videos really compliment the Atlas/Craftsman book on its operation that I feel is a very good investment to owners of this model lathe. In my opinion is for an owner to best learn his lathe besides using it is to disassemble each sub assembly and reassemble and adjust it using the book and your videos, if they feel confident in themselves to do it. Thank you, Ed K. Cleve. Oh.

Just brought home a 1935 12" Craftsman. It is missing it's back gears; a new (used) assembly is being shipped now.
To remove the chuck, I pinched the main drive belt with a set of vice-grips. Worked like a charm.
I planned to replace the belts anyway - and this kept me from marring any of the machined surfaces. I hope this helps anyone else that is tearing down an old machine and can't find a good way to lock the spindle.

As ever, I always enjoy your videos and the lessons I learn. I would love to know-and it might even be a good topic for a video-is what features you would most like to see on an all around lathe. Things like ideal inner diam. of the head stock spindle, optimum range of speed-number of speed options, working diameter. I have an ulterior motive in asking as I have decided to build my own and I just picked up a Honda 350 twin transmission to use for my speed changes. Can hardly wait to get started.

I purchased my Atlas Craftsman 12 over the weekend and it has several changes from your lathe. My back gears engage with an “in/out” pin on the front of the headstock. No need to open the cover. Second, my lever to loosen the belt is one he side of the headstock near the spindle, not near the drive power pulley like yours.
Interesting differences. I also have grease fittings and not oil caps on my spindle bearings

I see your craftsman 12" has the quick change for the feed rate. I am fortunate enough to have one of these lathes but I am not as fortunate as you in that I do not have a quick change feed thing...I'm not actually sure what they're called. "Quick change feed rate f23k thing"? Yea.. that's probably it. I have all the gears, at least to my knowledge I do, there's a crap load of them in there. I see they are mainly used for threading but I would like to be able to quickly flip a few around to be able to relativly quickly change the feed rate from turning or facing down to parting without a ton of screwing around. I'm not running a high production business using a...god only knows how hold this thing is, especially since it doesn't have the feed lever thing. But I do have a parting tool holder and a blade for it and I wanted to try it out. I could feed it by hand but I've heard that the steady feed rate is pretty crucial to a good cut AND a good finish. If the back looks like crap and I have to cuck it back up and touch it up then I really didn't need to part it off to in the first place right? Anyhoo. I've had this lathe for about 7 years now, I only use it here and there, usually when I break something on a car I can't get soon enough and have to make it. Mostly bushings, spacers...that sort of thing. I cut threads in college on bigger lathes and have yet to need to do so on this machine but I'd like to do so with this machine as I might even be able to make new lead screws for my crappy Chinese bench top mill. It would be a lot less crappy if there wasn't so much slop in the lead screws. I really thought I'd get to know this thing pretty well by playing with it but when something is pretty much an antique you don't want to doing too much that involves "playing". So I'd like to get to know this machine better. I saw you had some vids where you were selling off extras. If you have anything for that lathe that you want to part with, contact me. A 4 jaw chuck would be nice but I don't know why the hell I'd needed. I guess I don't care...it would be nice to have one anyway damnit! LOL Thanks for all the vids and wisdom.

I just need to connect my power chord and have the lathe turn from the top towards the operator. The posts on the motor are marked 1, 2, 3 and 4. Would like to know where to place the hot and neutral wires, can't seam to find the answer anywhere so can you please advise, thanks.

I cannot answer that. Isn't there a wiring diagram someplace on the motor?

Would a 6" 4 jaw chuck weighing about 20 pounds (backplate included) be too heavy for this spindle? I just got one finished up and it worries me that it's too heavy and will harm the bearings in the long run. Mine is an older model with the babbitt bearings.

Daniel S Patten Jr I found out that at some point someone must have over pulled the pin out, when they did there is another pin that keeps it in location,,that pin fell out and into the bore,,blocking it from going back in,,,had to take the headstock all apart,,but it was a easy fix after that,,,

Great series and thanks for doing all the work making these videos. I'm sure I'm not alone being one the people who are less pro at this. I build my own race cars and find I can do a lot of the easier but expensive machining I would normally send out myself. After watching you explain how to do it I'm confident enough to try myself and the feeling of accomplishment is fantastic! I love when someone asks me "hey, where did you get that spacer" and I say "I made it". On another note, I can't find the Model or serial number on my Atlas lathe. Can you tell me where to look? Thanks and keep up these Great videos!

Thanks for your quick reply. That's too bad about the website... hate to hear it. I have been watching your videos... have not come close to watching them all. I got a question that I haven't found a video for yet. Maybe you can help me? I have a Craftsman 101.214. It's a good machine everything is tight except one issue. When I go to make a cut... the chuck moves... it's got some play in it. Not sure if the spindle is wore out where it goes through the timken bearing... or if the inner ring of the bearing has been worn away? There's no play around spindle and bearing next to gears... just where spindle and bearing next to the chuck. Either way no matter how I adjust speed or feed or sharpen cutting tools, or adjust the angle I can't make a smooth cut. I will soon take it apart to see, but figured I ask you first before I even attempted to do so. What's you opinion on the matter? Replace the bearing? Attempt to make a new spindle? Haul it to the junk yard?Hmmmm...? I'd greatly appreciate any info you could give me. I dig your informative videos... better than machining school... more fun than people.
