    Given that those tiny garnet particles are moving at [whatever speed y'all figured out], is it possible that when cutting harder materials it's like hitting it with a tiny hammer, and it's chipping it away? I'm sure Cody could figure it out, perhaps by throwing that cut piece under a microscope and seeing if it looks like tiny fractures or tiny scratches.

Bedrock simply refers to the topmost layer of rock beneath some loose material, generally called regolith, that may be more accurately described as soil, sand, silt or gravel. there is a drain at the side that goes into the sewer system probably. Most of the abrasive and cut material becomes that sand they have to clear out, so the water draining is usually not as dirty.

  • @Yargenshmoler
    @Yargenshmoler 6 років тому +2

    From what i was able to find online (this is 100% possibly wrong i didnt research very much) the abrasive is able to cut through a material harder than it because upon impact it releases an immense amount of heat, which softens the material it hits and allows for cutting since the abrasive will be replaced by cooler abrasive which is maintaining its hardness while the sapphire stays hot enough to be softer. Hopefully im not misinforming everyone.

    Wouldnt it be pretty close to diamond? Correct me if I'm wrong but is a sapphire just a diamond with small impurities that change the color? I know there are different colored diamonds. Or are sapphires, rubies, emeralds different materials all togethers

    Tungsten carbide would be about a 9 on the mohs scale but it should be "easy" to find a large chunk of it since it is used commonly in mining, farming and other industrial applications

    I want to see jade cut on the water jet. Hardness only refers to the materials resistant to scratching. If you hit a diamond with a hammer it will shatter into little pieces - there's a contest in Wyoming every year to see if anyone can break a jade boulder with a sledge hammer and nobody has ever broken it. Jade fibers are interwoven and in effect lock together making it very tough.

    Egyptians back in the day ((way back in the day)) used copper tool to widdle down stone, so I could see hardness 8 making a dent in hardness 9, water alone can carve rock it takes a long time (mellenniums) I suspect high volocities and pressure helps "a little"

    Is that aFlow machine? I ran one for a year awhile back. I used to cut rocks with it in my down time. You are actually cutting that corundum mainly with water pressure.garnet will never scratch a corundum massive like Sapphire. Cool experiment though. Try setting some of your tougher cuts in plaster of Paris as they will remain more stable. Quickcrete worked well to for larger pieces.

    I don't think the abrasive strictly needs to be harder than the material you're trying to cut. Diamond is the hardest material on earth but not the strongest, smack it with a hammer and you'll turn it to dust.
    I think that the momentum of the garnet is sufficient to break off tiny pieces of the harder material by fracture, not etching, so it still "cuts", but isn't strictly "cutting".

    You wanna get a block of Carbide or a Carbide bit and compare how it fares to the Sapphire. Good carbide is right up there with it but a completely different material.

    I do not know too much about hardness but isn't the way things hardness is measured is by scratches? like a steel wire shouldn't be able to scratch glass because steel is lower on the scale than glass. does this check out or am I thinking about it wrong?

  • @Kags
    @Kags 6 років тому

    I don't think it would have scratched in half if your abrasive is softer than the sapphire. My guess would be that the impact of the abrasive itself might chip away some of the material. Sort of like cracking a rock with wooden stakes. They get all mangled and shed bits of wood everywhere but you can still split the rock.

    Wurtzite boron nitride. Research this substance. It’s significantly harder and more dense than diamond. Diamond is the worlds hardest naturally occurring material but the previous named material is considerably harder(synthetic)
