Since they saw what happened to Iraq and Saddam, they spend every dime they have in military equipment and even build some military helicopters in iran, but not for civilian use. These choppers are old American birds that was sold to Shah of iran in late 1960s. They can not find parts for them so they have to rely on home made parts manufactured by reverse engineering.

@@carolflann2927 . You took me back even before 1979 . The Shah exiled Ayatollah because he was causing problems in Iran , so Khumeiny took refuge in Najaf , the Holly Capital of the Shiya in Iraq. Saddam told the Shah that he would exterminate the Ayatullah but the good hearted (naive) shah refused. Saddam later kicked Ayatullah out because he started causing the same problems in Iraq by provoking the Shiya majority in Iraq . Khumeiny went to France ( N.B a Christian country and not to any other Arabian country or a non-Arab Moslem country) . He continued provoking the Iranian people by sending his recorded speeches on cassette tapes ( The Cassette Tapes Revolution ) till he destabilized Iran .Shortly after the Shah abdicated , he left Paris back to Iran in 1979 and he became the Supreme religious Leader and few months late Saddam toppled the Iraqi President and he became the dictator . Khumeiny executed hundreds of thousands of Iranians in 1979 but his thirst for blood was not quenched , he provoked the Iraqi-Iranian in 1980 which lasted 8 years . 3 Million soldiers were killed , not counting deaths of civilians due to other causes and the destruction of both countries . Khumeiny smiled once in his life and that was when Ahmadul Deen Nijad and his gang invaded the American embassy in Tehran and took them hostages . Ahmaduldeen Nijad later became prime minister of Iran , Raisi who acted ( as a judge without a degree in law ) condemned several hundred thousands Iranians to death by hanging them , using Cranes to hang them in front of people in their suburbs , so he was (ordained) President of Iran . This is first Islamic Republic in History , not much different from the Historical Caliphates 1400 years ago and onwards to the last Ottoman caliph in 1923 . the Caliph of ISIL , Abu Balker Al-Baghdady in 2014 .

@@Thedrunkenswede1337 I think Russian helicopters are pretty rugged. An Mi-8 has a tad more range than a Bell 212. Also Iran has managed to reverse engineer and cobble spare parts to keep their F-4's and F-14's flying. That's a tougher job I think than "updating" a Bell 212. In my opinion Iran was flying the 212's because they wanted to, not because they had to.

1 of 3 helos trashed on the same route. I would bet pilot error. But, any lack of maintenance parts were present before the flight. Thus, the pilot and flight engineer made the call.
