This was probably the best World Cup I have ever watched. So many great teams at once and every team still had its own style.
Teams that had looked good in qualifying and in pre-tournament friendlies like Spain, the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Peru and West Germany were extremely disappointing. Argentina were not even half the side they had been four years earlier, with Mario Kempes a shadow of his former self and Maradona a total flop. All the skill and class in this tournament came in matches involving Brazil and France.
WC98 was greater than this tournament.
West Germany v Austria is the most shameful match in WC history.
Then butchers like Gentile and Schumacher got away with murder.

Jamás he vuelto a ver un equipo de fútbol tan fantástico como el de Telé Santana, comandado por Zico, Sócrates y Falcao. El Brasil de 1982 difícilmente se volverá a repetir y deleitar a nuestros ojos. Para mi este Brasil fue el mejor de todos los tiempos, a pesar que no llegó a ser campeón mundial, por el deleite, espectáculo, su fútbol maravilloso e incomparable.
El mediocampo era maravilloso ,pero el mejor de todos los tiempos ,no lo creo...los delanteros no estaban a la altura ..especialmente Serghino ,pero era un lujo verlos jugar 💯💯
He visto personalmente a las mejores selecciones de Brasil desde 1962 en Chile, México 70, Estados Unidos 94, Corea - Japón 2002; al único Brasil que no pude ver porque aún no nacía, fue al Brasil de Suecia 58. De todos los que he visto, el equipo que encantó a propios y extraños por su fútbol maravilloso fue el equipo de Telé Santana de España 82, aunque lamentablemente no quedaron campeones, por esas circunstancias y errores que se cometen en el fútbol.

Brazil in 1982 were not really a team - only a brilliant midfield - probably the best in World Cup history. In the match against Italy, Serginho and Eder were non-existent and their defence was cut apart nearly every time the Italians counter attacked.

Tele Santana's big mistake against Italy was his selection of 3 players who were clearly off form and less effective against a very experienced, highly robust, and brutal Italy!! He should have replaced the out of form Valdir Perez with Carlos in goal. He should've replaced the attacking Cerezo with the more experienced and defensive Batista in Defensive midfield, and he should have replaced the clearly off form Serginho with the prolific goal scorer, .. Roberto Dynamite as striker!! Sadly, the inclusion of clearly off form and ineffective players like ... Perez, Cerezo, and Serginho against Italy, caused Brazil ... the best team in the tournament ... the World Cup!!

Valdir Perez didn't even make any effort at all and was only pathetically bird watching !! I'm absolutely certain that the more cautious, Batista would not have made that silly, suicidal mistake by Cerezo, which gave away the second goal to Italy !! I'm certain Roberto Dynamite would have scored at least 1 or 2 of those many sitters, which the clearly off form Serginho had bungled away !! Personally, for me, and for Brazil's football fans the world over, this has to be the most painfully tragic and heartbreaking football match in World Cup history!! 😢

Probably true that they were the best. But they had an easy route to the final. Germany, Italy and England were all in the same bracket. If it hadn't been for that unbelievable 4-3 game against Germany the Italians would have been fresher. They only broke apart in the last 20 minutes or so.

@@wally19 On that occasion it was a 50-50 ball and the keeper didn't have chance to avoid the collision when Maradona pipped him to the ball by a finger width, it would have been a harsh penalty to say the least because they both had a chance of reaching the ball first and they were both responsible for the collision. Besides, Maradona's touch sent the ball immediately out of play.

En el primer gol de Brasil, Fillol llegó a tocar el tremendo zapatazo de Eder. Este Eder era una maravilla al igual que Zico, Falcao, Sócrates, Cerezo y Junior. Pero esta selección de Brasil estaba muy decompensada; el portero, la defensa y el delantero centro eran de verbena. Por eso era muy difícil que pudiesen ganar el Mundial, aunque dejaron momentos imborrables.
Lo de Argentina también sorprendió mucho. El papel tan irregular que hicieron con los jugadores tan extraordinarios que tenían en aquel momento. De hecho por nombres es un equipo muy superior al de México 86. También es cierto que en algunos partidos los árbitros permiten excesiva dureza contra Maradona. El penalti que le hacen en este partido es un escándalo.

Usted lo ha dicho...NOMBRES...nada más...Esa Argentina con esa base del 78 ya venía en descenso...esos jugadores estaban quemando su último mundial y su nivel era muy inferior....incluso a fillol lo bailaron en uno de los goles de Italia...en cuanto al 86 esa plantilla por trayectoria era muy inferior a la del 78 y por eso se dice con justa razón que MARADONA ganó SOLO ese mundial y hasta la fecha es el único jugador en hacer algo así (aunque Mbapé estuvo muy cerca de igualarlo en Qatar)
Me ha gustado mucho la lúcida respuesta.
El tema de que Diego Maradona ganó él solo el Mundial 86 es la mayor duda filosófica-futbolistica de todos los tiempos. Es innegable que sin la aportación ni la presencia del gran astro la Argentina no hubiese conseguido coronarse campeona del mundo. Pero también es cierto que hubieron jugadores de excelente nivel que colaboran especialmente en el logro de ese torneo.
El primero para mí (obviamente dejando fuera a Maradona) es Jorge Valdano. Hizo un Mundial notable marcando 5 goles. Contaba 31 años en aquel momento y venía de realizar la mejor temporada de su carrera jugando en el Madrid campeón de Liga y UEFA siendo considerado mejor jugador de la temporada por la revista deportiva Don Balon. Uno de sus goles fue en la final.
Habría que añadir la excelencia de Burruchaga, el enorme trabajo de Ruggeri y Giusta (creo que fue el que salva bajo palos el posible empate a 2 contra Inglaterra), y sobre todo, la inteligencia y dedicación del doctor Bilardo, que supo motivar individualmente y en conjunto a aquellos históricos jugadores.
El acompañamiento de equipo de Pele en el 58 y en el 70 es muy superior al de Diego en el 86.

Uma coisa que eu notei nessa seleção, ela era muito boa mas existia muito egoismo (individualismo dos atletas), muitas vezes os atacantes podiam passar a bola para o Serginho, mas a ganancia e o individualismo fazia com que eles chutassem para o gol.

This match was highly regretted for the Brazilian team. This WC, the Selecao played the most charming football with a list of artists-footballers headed by Dr. Socrates. In this match, the Selecao needed only the draw issue to advance further and the Selecao held it in hands when the score was 2-2 and the time remained short. But the artists remained artist minded, they kept on attacking and they lost.

The other three though were quite superb.

Brasil era o melhor ataque na época. O problema era sua defesa. Só pensavam em atacar e a Itália estava péssima e teve pura sorte no oportunismo de Paolo Rossi. Me lembro de 82. Ninguém apostava na derrota do Brasil. Deu zebra mesmo Brasil era melhor que Argentina que eram desleais e grandes catimbeiros.

Brazil of 1982 is undoubtedly one of the greatest team in history. However, what I never understood is how they kept a mediocre at best, center forward like Serginho on the field for the whole tournament. In my mind, to this day it still remains one of football's greatest mysteries...🤔

When Teams were just unique to there own culture & style, and players had great characters Socrates a doctor heavy drinker & chain smoker, Brazil played true Brazilian football, Italy played Italian style , France with there stunning midfield of platini , Tigana, Fernandez & Giresse , west Germany were awseome, this is a true World Cup , you don’t remember one from the next now there so generic, so sad.

Brasil was the best team in the tournament, Italy barely got out of the group stages but once they did that, they got hot and no one could stop them, Serginho was the worst player in the Brazilian lineup, he missed vs. Italy and all Brazil needed was the draw to advance.
I also loved France, they had a great tournament also, I loved Alain Girese, Platini, Tigana, Rocheteau, Gingini, when playing on the streets I would pretend I was Girese I really liked him a lot, just a little kid having some fun.
Tele Santana's big mistake was selecting 3 ineffective and off form players for this match against a highly experienced and very brutal Italy!! He should have replaced Perez in goal with Carlos!! He should have replaced the attacking Cerezo with the more defensive Batista in defensive midfield!! And he definitely should have replaced the clearly off form and ineffective Serginho with the prolific striker, Roberto Dynamite!! Had Tele Santana made these 3 changes, ... Brazil would have been champions in 1982 World Cup!!
