The Tower of power is my first outboard. So glad I picked it. Turned out to be really easy to work on and it just works. Love it. Good luck with your 90.
Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ I've got an 89 90 horse tower of power on a 71 21 ft Grady-White. She's quite nimble. It's time for me to pull the carburetors, they're leaking a little too much. Thanks for the video ✌️🇺🇲
i just love these engines. simple and they run great. I use mine all of the time. Will be going out this weekend. The rest of the boat is going to need some love soon. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
I had a 1985 90 hp tower of power. Pretty much the same motor. It is natural for the carbs to leak fuel when you tilt the motor after running. It’s just the carb bowels emptying out.
i did find out later that a small leak was normal. but after rebuilding the carbs, I found out that 2 out of the 3 floats did not float any longer. ua-cam.com/video/UMK2hxR4JFo/v-deo.html she runs great ever since. I just took it out yesterday. I love the Tower of power
Cool I have the same engine. I hope you bought new floats. I had one get a hole once out on the lake. One can turn that carb. screw in and limp home though. Also, it's natural when you tilt the engine forward the fuel will run out of the carburetors bowls unless you pull the fuel inline hose out and run it till it runs out of fuel. I don't bother pulling the line anymore. When you fill the lower unit fill from the bottom and wait for the oil to run out the top plug hole also. I hope you were careful removing the needles to the floats. Don't break an ear off. Although once I used JB weld to fix a broken one and it worked. They also sell a hydraulic unit for this engine. Mine went bad and I bought the whole unit made in China and assembled in Mexico, hey it works the trim unit can lift the entire boat up in the rear. My engine is on a 1986 Dynatrak SS Fish and Ski boat. There's a lot of parts out there yet for this engine. I just rebuilt the lower unit about a year ago, the pinion gear was showing wear. Thanks for the video, I've tried to make a few and it's a lot of work and time to get it done.
I love these engines. So simple, and when they work they work 100% of the time. :) i did replace the floats and rebuild all three carbs. This is my first outboard and have been learning a lot. ua-cam.com/video/UMK2hxR4JFo/v-deo.html The fluid in the lower unit did not look too bad. I flushed out some. It was surprising how little it takes. ua-cam.com/video/soekr7hXi1g/v-deo.html Some of our plans for this winter would be to take the lower unit off and check out the impeller and look at the hydrolic system. it still sounds OK and works but it will slowly leak down. The seal in the cylinder might be gone. All in all this has been one my better projects. We love this thing. We cleaned up the wiring, added an inverter so it can be my floating office, got all the lights and pumps to work again. Loads of fun each time we turn around. Good luck and thanks for the watch. Check out the entire playlist. ua-cam.com/video/-inkoYjT-P4/v-deo.html&pp=iAQB
That motor is cleaaaannnnnn! Man! Mine was leaking out of the front of the carbs i had to replace the needles and seats. I can send you a link to them if youd like. I paid about 10 bucks per set
Thanks, The boat all together is in great condition considering her age. The Mercury is a lot easier to work on then I first expected. I try to take it out to the lake a much as I can. Check out some of the videos on the sister channel. 5 lakes ODL. We had to create a new channel for some of the content to try to keep youtube happier. www.youtube.com/@5lakesodl313 My floats were trashed. Rebuilt all of them and threw some Sparky parts to it. Runs so much better. Check it out. ua-cam.com/video/UMK2hxR4JFo/v-deo.html Thanks for watching and I hope to have the video of the 9ish lb Carp I snagged yesterday. And a few large Mouth bass.
not really a must have but it works pretty well. The original outboard on this boat was a 170. I am thinking a bit of an overkill for a 17" footer. It does run well and as long as you monitor your mixture, it doesn't smoke that much. It does like to suck down the gas though
Sorry for the delay. Went out of town and got really busy with the day job. i am favoring a fuel issue. Stuck floats check this one out. Not looking at a full rebuild of them but to check the floats. ua-cam.com/video/UMK2hxR4JFo/v-deo.htmlsi=sybTxkhfwQxUEwCm
I bought a 1983 sylvan 18 foot fishing boat with a 115 it wont get fuel from the factory tank, i put another fuel hose on it to a gas can and got it to start for a few seconds until it died i noticed ghe fuel pump was leaking and the carbs were leaking i got rebuild kits for all of them and rebuilt them. Gonna mess with it this weekend any idea why it wouldnt be getting fuel from the factory tank? I cant even find where the fuel line goes to. I was told it ran last summer before he had it winterized and stored.
it sounds like it is not keep prime. the fuel pump on these things is not your typical pump. it just vibrates and that keep the fuel going. It has to have an air leak either in the hose or the pump. Both are cheap. Depending on your model. The rebuild kit for the fuel pump should be around $20ish. Since you said the pump was leaking I would start there. We just fixed this issue with my brother boat. The hose from the tank to the engine had a pin hole in it. it would run for a few seconds and then die. Good luck and thanks for the watch. Since I worked the engine over on ours, it has been wonderful besides the amount of fuel it drinks. WOW.
This tower of Power is a 2 stroke. It uses a lot of gas. Smokes a little but runs Awesome. :) Good luck on your project and hopefully we can help you out on your journey.
i have no clue on price. I have a dude that has a smaller Yamaha. The mechanic charged him over a grand. which I thought was a bit excessive. And he could not get it running afterward. I had it running within 1.5 hours of getting to his house. it is a good thing that other guy had over 40 years of experience. I have not found an honest mechanic yet. As long as you take your time. You can get it done. Just make sure everything is clean when you put it back together. Good luck.
When i timed mine. I took the 1 spark plug out and turned it by hand to TDC. You should see the piston. Since it is a 2 stroke any time it is up, it is in the compression stroke. Once that was done i make sure the trigger was on a took that was lined up with the marks. I would have to take off the cover to look at the marks. I will try to look at it more this weekend. it is covered up right now. Sorry i could not be more help.
I have a few on the list. if you have a good one. send them over. My plan is to narrow it down to a few and let the other 4 Lakes make the final decision.
Thanks for the nostalgia. Ive inherited an early 80s 90hp. Love the noise.

I wasn't aware if the power behind this motor definitely a must have for speed and smoothness on the water.

What would cause my 1986 mariner 115 only run when it’s wide open in neutral but dies when you try to let it idle

Is this a 4 or 2 stroke, I have this at home but don’t know what kind it is

I’m trying to get my carbs rebuilt , I feel like my mechanic is over charging . What would you say is in the ballpark price for parts and labor??

Clean motor for the age
Thanks. I love the tower of power. It just works every time. We took it out last week and picked up a 4 lber.
Thanks for the watch.
Hello man. Nice motor . I have a question I have the 90hp tower of power do you remember the timing settings
