Wow, mine is doing the exact same thing and I’m at my wits end with it. Tomorrow, I’m pulling the leg off and having a look! My guess is hours of trolling and low speed running causes this problem. Thanks for making this video!
Had the same problem with Yamaha 90. I have cleaned water separator and got better running but didn't go more than 4000 RPM. Then sent to the shop and they rebult Injectors after that it's running perfect
Holy Smokes, I think you just saved me. I can tilt it up out of the water and it runs like a champ, but putting it into the lake makes it stall out. I was starting to think I had a boat that was allergic to water. I’ll be checking for this tonight or tomorrow.
@@Mr_PK0 Yeah, I was unable to get mine taken apart enough to check the exhaust and attempt to clean it out. But I ran a can of seafoam through it, and then another can into the next full tank of fuel, and it's running like a champ. Some people caution against seafoam. I'm familiar with it from old snomobiles, chainsaws, etc, and other old 2 strokes. My boat is a 90hp Evinrude 2 stroke. Not sure what year, but early '80s I think. Seems to have worked like a charm.
whiteshadow204 thank you , I got a 87 Suzuki dt175 , it doesn’t want to start when is trim all the way down in the lake , half way up it l will start and when going into low gear it goes and hi gear it will go up to 5k rev and doesn’t go as fast .
whiteshadow204 I have a 55 evinrude and out of water on muffs revs fine and put in water boat will not plane off but put in neutral, grab throttle under calon and hit it and revs up, screams put back in gear and go like it just gets to a point and stays
I’ve had the exact same problem and gone through all the same fixes with the same result...no power on the water. I can’t wait to drop the leg and try this. I’m hoping it solves the problem. I have searched the internet looking for a video with some new ideas. Great job. 👍
Greg Dwiar Unfortunately that was not my motor’s issue. Mine has a blown drive shaft seal under the flywheel that I think is sucking in air and diluting the fuel mixture. That is my next project to see if that solves the issue.
I watched your video and realized my xr6 just bought had same problem. Ran a can of mercury powertune, fixed my problem, runs great now with all new ignition. Merc master mech could not figure it out
i had the exact same problem last week, but the exhaust wasnt clogged. We cleant the cabs but it didnt work. The problem we had was that the lowest carb wasnt connected to the upper carb so just 2 cylinders were working and the other 2 were just running stable.
thankx man! im having almost the same "issue" motor seems to run fine on hose/muffs but put it in the water and idles good, low speed so-so but my 20HP merc will NOT get my 14ft boat above 10mph! sometimes it will kick up to 20 or even 22mph but quickly drop me back to 8mph and not go above 8mph on the lake. i cleaned carb and seemed to run better but back on the lake only 7-8 mph. Not fuel filter! checked for holes in fuel lines as it seems not getting enough fuel! took fuel pump diaphragm out and shined flashlight no rips or tears! I'll give this a go before spending $$$ on new fuel pump or sending it to "the boat doctor"
What did you do? I got a 50HP 4cyl Mariner. It runs OK on idle, but when I give full throttle the motor give me walking speed. It sounds OK, but like 1000rpm maybe.. I have cleaned the carburetors, no luck. Plugs are fine, fuel is fine. Its like the motor refuse to go higher on RPM :(

will try hope it works! outboard runs fin out of water hooked to a hose, but in water under load it just shuts down when throttle is engaged! thanks for the tip, will let ya know in the comments if your way works...
I know this is an older video, however, I’ve been trying to figure out this exact issue. On the trailer with the headphones hooked up to it, the boat revs fast and sounds like a race car lol but as soon as you put it in the water it feels weak. I’ll have to check this out and see if that’s the issue. I know the motor was rebuilt about two years back, but that doesn’t meant that they touched the exhaust side of the motor and I don’t see anything on the paperwork about it either. Great video!
Thank you, i will try that, i have same issue, bogging down on new engine, started happening after i went out to ocean, i flushed it in fresh bucket of water but i never removed propeller, so im thinking maybe some deposits got in there
I have the exact same thing with my Johnson 70hp and I was just thinking the same thing about the exhaust. I'm gonna try that next Thanks so much for confirming what i thought. I too have replaced everything I thought would be the problem and like you it did not help. Now i will try this too.
Same exact problem here, my mercury 90HP 2S runs great out of the water, changes plugs and wires, cleaned carb, checked compression and fuel lines. Runs for about 10 mins in the water but at full throttle it only gets half of normal RPMs and Boggs down . I’m gonna try this on the weekend, hope it works. Unlike other posts, I’ll let you know if it works 😉

My motor runs nicely it idles and starts fine but the max speed I’m getting out of the boat is 17kms/hr that’s with myself and my wife in the boat. I’ll take my lower leg off and take a look I’m hoping that a blocked exhaust is what I find because I’m lost for ideas now. Did yours do the same? Did you have trouble reaching full speed? Thanks
I'm having this same problem now on an 85 Merc 115HP 6 Cylinder. I rebuilt carbs, rebuilt fuel pump (just for GP (general purpose)), did impeller while I was at it, still didn't run right. Found 2 coils that had intermittent spark replaced them, took boat out today and it would still bog, then it would clear up and go again as it should then it would bog again. I did run a full can of Quicksilver PowerTune in it before I took it to the water after the carb builds and today I ran it on the hose at night and checked for spark shorts and I noticed a lot of carbon around the prop hub. Your video now has me wondering if I might have a similar problem like you're describing. But I'm thinking mine is something else and will probably doublecheck my carb builds and fuel pump rebuild as my problem seems to be intermittent as it will clear up for short bursts sometimes, but long story short, your video is very helpful info and useful information for us shade tree mechanics to tuck away in our brain box. Thanks for sharing!
90hp Was running fine I took of carbs cleaned them install them back... now at high soeed I have no power max speed is 10 mph ! What could it be ? I turned the mixture screw on all 3 carbs at 1& 1/4 turn
I need to check mines I have and ox66 runs fine out the water but under a load it does that to, not wanting to start. I change almost everything still does it.
I have a johnson 120 that sounds exactly the same. I haven't taken it out since I went through the carbs...but if it's still doing it now...this would be another place to look before going into the ignition system! So where is the exhaust you cleaned out exactly? You say you pull the lower end out and can look up and see it? Thanks for the vid!
Yup, you will see it right off the bat once you get it off there and take a peek up inside, if that's what you end up having to do that is. Should have some nice carbon-soot on it to guide your way-make it easy mode to figure out-find. :) Let us know what you found out sir, love hearing folks problems and fixes... always good to hear about stuff to keep in the ol memory bank just in case. Peace!
Turns out mine was the fuel pump. Changed it and everything is back in order (at least last time out) Will see long term if there are any other symptoms but as of now my issue was fuel starvation with very similar symptoms.
Trey Coursey my 89 Johnson 140 vro is doing the same thing it won’t plan unless I have a few people in the bow then it pick up speed could that be the same problem? As of now I can’t go over 3000 rpm unless a few guys go to the front now then it picks up slowly and still not hitting top speed.
@@xuxothao7199 If my memory serves me correctly I ended up finding that my fuel pump was not behaving appropriately. Once I replaced that (eBay) things were just fine.
I have an older model Mercury Mariner 25 hp motor. All summer it has ran great! The issue now is that all of a sudden, it will not reach it's full throttle. When i decelerate, in order to shift, it starts to die out, resulting in me having to maintain some form of throttle at all times to keep her running. Any suggestions beyond cleaning the exhaust? I am cleaning mine TODAY lol. Thanks again, for a great video!
Hey I have a 87 merc 25 hp with the same issue, ran awesome magnets fell off the fly wheel I got a new one and it hasn’t run right since, I’ve changed the stater, trigger assembly, coils, plugs, wires, and I’ve cleaned the carb several times, rebuilt the carb and fuel pump, new primer and fuel line on my gas tank, new upper and lower seals on the power head and still won’t run right, it starts easy idles ok but needs a little extra throttle to keep an idle, and when I give it gas it bogs out at 7 mph when originally I was getting 24mph, just curious what fixed yours
check your fuel hose those little o rings each end can gcet a hole in it letting air instead of fuel if dout tak a fish hook the oring jerk it out install new ring ( avail at boat shops) press new ring in with your thumb it will idle fine just want rev up starved for fuel check bothe ends of hose
Did you remove the bottom part of the engine? Am I having the same problem you had on your boat? Could you show where you uncovered it, which is not clear in the video.
I have a 1988 200 HP Mercury outboard. Can't get it up pass 4000 RPM and it stalls when I slow to idle.. I have changed the ignition coils, wires , spark plugs, stator, Trigger Assembly and put in a new fuel pump kit. Still the same issue. Wondering what to try next. Ready to give up. Any suggestions.
I'm having the same problem, I already took it to 2 mechanics, one did carburetor kits on all 3 , the second one changed the choke solenoid, and all kinds of things, yet I go to the lake and I get it to run but as soon as I accelerate it shuts off 😥. I'm having a mechanic come by in a few days. If I get mine fixed I'll let you know what the problem was with mine . It's a 150 hp evenrude.
hey cheers for the tip. spent ... too much at merc dealership having switch pannel replaced, carbs rebuilt etc etc. same issue still there. they considering wiri g harness as its old motor and possible lots of probing harness over the years. but this could well be it. ill put it to them when i take it in, let u know the outcome. thanks again.
just had that happen today ...boat I just got runs awesome in my back yard ....cant get it in plane in the lake ....im gonna check that ,never thought of it
lee bros Chauncey and quincy it helped it idle smother but mine ended up being a trigger problem in the ignition timing ....but it's not a waste of time it for sure helped
replace small orings in each end fuel hose tak a fish hook jerk it out press new ring in wth your thumb---- rings avail at any boat shop this cure s idle ok no rev up
For the love of god, please show us a video of how to fix it. For the uneducated. I bought a used boat and my wife is ready to kill me because it doesnt work!
@@jstrings00 Would your engine ever die with this problem in the water if you kept on pushing the lever? And do you have a water separator on it? I appreciated your reply
My 40hp 2 stroke motor cranks fine, but when giving it full throttle it only goes about 10 miles and hour. So, as I'm going up the lake I will put it in neutral idle it high for about 3min, then idle it back down give it full throttle then it runs normal. After fishing 4hrs crank it up again, same problem. Can you help me?
I would clean / rebuild the carburetors. Make sure you have fresh fuel and I would replace the spark plugs. That would be my first step. Inexpensive things you can do that may need done anyway.
Same problem of my 75 hp mercury 1986 . The crank seal leak , May be the problème start this point . Inside the water with exaust back pressure engine stal at idle . Sorry for my english , i am french , any body is perfect . 🤣🤣🤣🤣

My boat has a 25 horse johnson. It cranks and idles fine but when I twist the throttle it boggs down and try to kick in but won't. What could that be??
Scott Cozart I would suggest cleaning your carburetor, sounds like it is starving for fuel. Especially if it's been sitting for a while. Also don't run it on gasoline that has ethanol in it. The ethanol gums up the jets in the carb.
Hi I got a 60 hp johson vro (removed) and came with project boat.mech did major service and take out for run did well in water I towed to home.when I take it in water it's starting and slowing dying.and once it's in gear it working very well.once I stopped it not starting but cranking.any idea do u recon it's the same problem

Man my did the exactly same thing what did you figure out that made it run better I have done clean the carbs out and it still doing it my Bub gets tighten when you prim it up but soon as you start the motor it won’t stay prim or when I put it in forward in the water it dies did you ever find an idea
Man I appreciate it what mine is doing is it cranks up goes in gear just fine but soon as I put it in water and it turns into forward or reverse it cuts off do you know what the problem is on that could it be the same thing
Question. My boat will go into gear out of the water. But when its in water, I have no forward gear. Just grinding. I've checked shifting length. Any ideas?
sorry for the late reply. No, I didn't. If you choose to, I'd recommend Carbon Off!, or something similar. In retrospect, I probably should've tried some lol
I had one just like it. I talked to Mercury personally. They told me the best thing to do was cut the cables loose. Next time you go fishing and sink it to the bottom. There was never a solution
Sounds like you need an experienced outboard mechanic to do a ‘link and sync’ on the motor’s carbs, throttle and shift linkage ( I had the same issue with a rebuilt 75 hp. Johnson Stinger ).

How to fix holes on fibreglass boat
I'm no boat mechanic by any means, but I always start with checking the plugs and carburetor.
@@dylanbarese4492 ended up being plugs. Incorrect gap.
check your fuel hose those little o rings each end can gcet a hole in it letting air instead of fuel if dout tak a fish hook the oring jerk it out install new ring ( avail at boat shops) press new ring in with your thumb it will idle fine just want rev up starved for fuel check bothe ends of hose
Did you remove the bottom part of the engine? Am I having the same problem you had on your boat? Could you show where you uncovered it, which is not clear in the video.
Add seafoam to your gas. It will remove the carbon over time
I took the lower unit off and looked up inside but didn't see any blockage it was just black and suety.
Having the same issue on a 88 50 merc.
Hey did you ever find out what was the problem with your motor
have a 200HP evinrude that won’t go passed 4500rpm in the water changed plugs, stator and cleaned the carbs wonder if this could be the issue?
I'm having the same problem, I already took it to 2 mechanics, one did carburetor kits on all 3 , the second one changed the choke solenoid, and all kinds of things, yet I go to the lake and I get it to run but as soon as I accelerate it shuts off 😥. I'm having a mechanic come by in a few days. If I get mine fixed I'll let you know what the problem was with mine . It's a 150 hp evenrude.
Update I have a 2001 115 Yamaha outboard I'm having the same issue but I have no clue how to get to the exhaust line.
Thanks man will give this a go tomorrow 👍
Hey that's what going on with my boat so I take the propeller out?
hey cheers for the tip. spent ... too much at merc dealership having switch pannel replaced, carbs rebuilt etc etc. same issue still there. they considering wiri g harness as its old motor and possible lots of probing harness over the years. but this could well be it. ill put it to them when i take it in, let u know the outcome. thanks again.
Freya Mac yessir, let me know
Freya Mac was it a clogged exhaust? What happened
Freya Mac .
They are robbing you like a doctor.
just had that happen today ...boat I just got runs awesome in my back yard ....cant get it in plane in the lake
....im gonna check that ,never thought of it
Jon Patterson did it work for you?
lee bros Chauncey and quincy it helped it idle smother but mine ended up being a trigger problem in the ignition timing ....but it's not a waste of time it for sure helped
Electrical most likely cdi or stator
I have one with the same problem I have already spent more than 2000 dollars and it cannot be repaired I am frustrated😭
Dudeeee I have been trying to find this answer
Great fix for outboard
replace small orings in each end fuel hose tak a fish hook jerk it out press new ring in wth your thumb---- rings avail at any boat shop this cure s idle ok no rev up
For the love of god, please show us a video of how to fix it. For the uneducated. I bought a used boat and my wife is ready to kill me because it doesnt work!
same
He tells you how to fix it tho
My boat does this but when I’m in the water if I get someone to stand up front it will eventually go full throttle could this be the issue
I have the same problem !!!! I need to show you my video .
Did you take motor off when you clean exhaust system?
No
Did you have to remove the fluids before taking the foot off?
No sir
New plugs and hey presto 👍
Would the engine ever die with this problem if you kept on pushing the lever? And have you heard of this happening to Yamahas?
No, but I’m sure it’s possible
@@jstrings00 Would your engine ever die with this problem in the water if you kept on pushing the lever? And do you have a water separator on it? I appreciated your reply
@@mikesolns1364 No and no
did the motor sound muffled? before you cleaned it out?
Not very
thanks for the tip
Bro you are the man. I was about to burn it. lol
Same 😂
Sledgehammer here lol
Holy shit mine is the same thing ima get it a try thanks man
My 40hp 2 stroke motor cranks fine, but when giving it full throttle it only goes about 10 miles and hour.
Mine done the same thing today man
I really hope this works on mine.
It idols great but in water no power like 4 mph.
Did you figure out what your problem was?
Would power tuner remove the clog?
Mike Murphy it’s worth a shot
Mine the same thing I’m checking it
No thank you. I have a 50 merc and it bogs down and runs like a 9.9. Been racking my head on it for a year now
Did it sputter out or flood out../ get worse when trimmed lower?.
No sir
Hey there , how do I get to the exhaust ?
Hey, I explained it in the video
@@jstrings00 hey there , yes I’m just a little confused on which bolts , is there anyway you could clarify that. Thanks I can drop my Instagram or something in the chat if that’s easier. Thanks great video
@@moistyfinch2226 oh ok I gotcha. It’s kind of hard to describe through messaging.
@@jstrings00 do you have a picture of the two bolts I have to remove , if you want I can drop my number for a minute
Can you send me some pics or a video of what to do exactly
Carboned up or low compression
I have a 50 Hp mercury . Reve up good out of water. in water it will reve about 1/2 way. Runs about 14 miles in water?
Sounds like what I described in the video
Was the motor pissing when the exhaust was clogged?
Yes
@@jstrings00mine doing the same thing yours was doing. Ima try to clean mine out and see if it helps it
My boat has a 25 horse johnson.
BRISTO PAULOSE I have the same exact engine and mine is doing this. I rebuilt the carbs before this happened though. I may take the foot off tomorrow and check it. I just don’t trust this engine right now.
i have a 110 johnson 2 stroke... it runs good out of water, put it in water ..it started..idle 5 min...got in it ...put it in reverse...it died..could not start it up again so we pushed it up on trailer
got any ideas????
Can you put it in gear out of water? If so, I’d check what I mentioned in the video.
@@jstrings00 yea I can put it in forward and reverse no problem
@@jstrings00 hey
We compression checked and 100 on all 4 plugs

I'm having a similar problem with my 115hp 2 stroke 6 cylinder out of the water put the muffs on and spray some fuel and air into the carburetor to start it but once out on the water it won't start at all any suggestions?
I would clean the carbs first and go from there
Man my did the exactly same thing what did you figure out that made it run better I have done clean the carbs out and it still doing it my Bub gets tighten when you prim it up but soon as you start the motor it won’t stay prim or when I put it in forward in the water it dies did you ever find an idea
Man I appreciate it what mine is doing is it cranks up goes in gear just fine but soon as I put it in water and it turns into forward or reverse it cuts off do you know what the problem is on that could it be the same thing
Mine is doing the same thing. Did you ever find out what it was?
Same problem I’m having.. any solution?

anyone ever find out the cause? my mercury 40 dies when I give it throttle while in gear
Dam nobody answered any of us in this comment thread lol
Question. My boat will go into gear out of the water. But when its in water, I have no forward gear. Just grinding. I've checked shifting length. Any ideas?
Hmm, I dont have a good answer. If your shift linkage is tight, its probably something in the foot.
Mines almost the same way but when I put it in gear in the water it cuts off any Answers
That sounds like what my boat motor is doing! Did you spray anything in there to help clean it ?
sorry for the late reply. No, I didn't. If you choose to, I'd recommend Carbon Off!, or something similar. In retrospect, I probably should've tried some lol

Did you say that in the water you only got 30 000 rpms ? Not bad for a stock Mercury. LOL !
can u make a video how to do it
Thanks a bunch 👍👍👍🛴
Show what kinds of trailers, show you putting them on . I'm interested but you just holding the product shows nothing.
I had one just like it. I talked to Mercury personally. They told me the best thing to do was cut the cables loose. Next time you go fishing and sink it to the bottom. There was never a solution
That’s unfortunate
Legend m8 😊
Sounds like you need an experienced outboard mechanic to do a ‘link and sync’ on the motor’s carbs, throttle and shift linkage ( I had the same issue with a rebuilt 75 hp. Johnson Stinger ).
Link and sync perfect done exactly by merc manual. 45 year merc owner.
