Gilmour's guitar work on this album is so creative and emotional. There are parts where it's just searing, screaming rage, and others where it's plaintive, longing melancholy. Animals is their 2nd best album next to DSOTM. Roger wrote everything but Daves guitar is stellar. His chops and tone was unreal. Also Rick was able to lay down some amazing keys and synths.
Roger didn't write everything. If Dave really did write 90% of Dogs (and I believe that; as a guitarist and bassist, I doubt Roger even knew half of those chords), then he wrote about 40% of the entire album. This was just the start of Roger trying to take credit for everything.
I'm glad that you acknowledged that Roger was the only one bringing in material. He's not the easiest guy to like, but sometimes he's treated like a pantomime villain when he really was the one making things happen.

And by then, Sid who was initially making music before being let go, Roger became the natural successor. I know Sid visited the studio Floyd was busy making the Wish You Were Here album. If he still had any real grasp of anything, he'd have been floored hearing the band recording the Animals album. I myself love Animals over every other album, but not implying anything before or after isn't spectacular. Animals was very aggressive when you read the lyrics; especially on the song Pigs.
I think Waters merely simplified a complex situation- and he did it in his favor. Two of the songs were worked on by the entire band live throughout 74 and 75 so to say that Waters brought in the completed songs all by himself compared to what was started in 74 is bit of a lie. It's like taking the bridge music the band added to live Childhood's End in 73, making it the main theme of the Wall and claiming "I, Roger Waters, wrote that." Up to Dark Side, the band was a lot better at handing out credit on the "Work in progress" tracks {Gilmour, Mason, Waters, Wright} but it all went "me, ME, ME!!!" until it was just "All me, you guys played."
@Rodzilla I've always thought Dog's was a Gilmour song, as for the DNA of Pink Floyd, David's is all over the place. That distinctive sound is what it's all about for me.

I think The Beatles first used 8-track recording in 1968? As mentioned here, Pink Floyd were using 24-track in London by 1976 - I found that interesting for technology milestone notes. This episode was also interesting for detailing some of the Floyd music industry deals and how things work out as a business and being musicians. @@latkagravas2967 Thanks. Animals is a powerhouse of an album that often gets overshadowed by Pink Floyd's other famous albums, but it's raw, truthful grittiness has stood the test of time.
To this day I still feel Animals is my favorite Floyd album. I can see other's arguments about Wall, Dark Side, and Wish You Were Here - albums I also love, being better or more significant or whatever, but Animals is the underrated gemstone of the 4 albums in my opinion......I saw Roger Waters in 2017. He played Pigs and Dogs complete with all the visual aid you can imagine. So awesome.
My favorite Floyd album. It has a very particular edge to it, which i attribute to the combination of their classic melodic sweetness with more tart flavored lyrics. When younger i loved to kick back into the night, headphones on, getting lost in thoughts with Dogs/Sheep Jams. That guitar solo from Dogs is just brilliant

Roger didn't "kick Richard out of the band", there was a GENERAL agreement in the band, that Ricks coke problems was too much to handle and that he didn't do diddly squat.
For me personally, Animals is their best album. I feel it is less well appreciated around the world due to its content being very specific to English (and British) society at that time. The album reflects life in the UK during the '70s,
I loved Waters description of Maggie Thatcher in Pigs (Three Different Ones); " Bus stop rat bag / Ha, ha, charade you are / You fucked up old hag / Ha, ha charade you are." LOL On Jan. 20, 2017, Rogers played to a million people in Mexico City and when he played this song, images of Donald Trump flashed on the multiscreen jumbotron.
This is great!!! Animals doesnt get as much attention as the other big albums , animals became my favorite floyd album after hearing it on vinyl when I was 15 , much love to this album big pace in my heart
I always loved every seconds of it...I was 14 when it came out and I remember buying the LP and calling all my friends to come to my place and religiously listen to it like x10 time in a row...
Quick story here. I had three cats in the early '80's. They never paid any attention to the music I played. When I got Animals on CD and played the song 'Dogs', and the sound of dogs howling came on, they completely freaked out. They never got used to it either, as I would have expected. Every time that tune played, they would hide behind the couch. I was under the impression the dog sounds were made electronically, but I haven't been able to confirm this either way. Can someone here shed some light on the origins of the dog tracks?
The beauty of this album and the haunting realism with every note played STILL cuts to the bone and I first heard it at 16 in 1986. If there is an album I could sing live with a full band, this is the one. So much detail and yet simple and to the point. A rite of passage for me. Perfection on all levels. PF are just so dang deep with everything and I'm grateful and blessed to have such armor. Props.
There are early versions of both "Dogs"and "Sheep". The early version of Dogs (called you gotta be crazy) was awesome. I would highly recommend it. I feel like it's just as good as the later album version, though for different reasons
I saw Pink Floyd at Empire Pool Wembley in 1974 before the release of wish you were here. The second half of the show was the full dark side of the moon with an encore of echoes. The first half was three songs Shine on you crazy diamond. Raving and Drooling (sheep) You've Got to Be Crazy (Dogs) I was surprised when wish you were here came out that the other two songs were not on it. Then image when I heard the two songs on animals but under different names.
Wow great job on this video. I think its one of your best efforts yet! As somebody who was already a fan by this time I learned some stuff I didn’t already know. Like the hilarious Battersea photo session ending with them doing what the photographers had wanted to do in the first place. Good pics good info about Roger’s takeover of the band. Fabulous piece of work on my fave Floyd lp ever. Dave was wrong it was one of their creative high points!!! I’m really looking forward to part 2! As we talked about before i saw two of the shows on the tour and i also saw The Wall starting to take place at those shows. This album might be even more timely now then it was even then. DOGS SHEEP AND PIGS INDEED!!!!
Something which was a huge part of the more rough-edged sound of Animals was Roger Waters' rhythm guitar on Pigs (three different ones) and Sheep. If you listen to those parts, they are clearly not David, and that's a big difference from previous albums.
Not my favourite Floyd (see above) but, yes, Animals could (and probably should) have made a double-album. I love your suggestion of chickens, horses and cows. Orwell would've liked that.
I hated Animals when I first brought it. However it is now my favourite Floyd album. The lyrics and songs are amazing and Gilmours guitar playing supports the aggressive songs with some his most stinging and razor sharp guitar playing.
'Gotta Be Crazy' and 'Raving and Drooling' had been written sometime in mid 1974 and were featured on a mini tour the Floyd did later that year. Once they had written 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', Gilmour wanted to have all three making up the next record, but Waters' concept of 'alienation' prevailed and they worked on other songs to complete what would be released in June 1975 as 'Wish You Were Here'. Meaning the first two aforementioned songs were filed away and about a year later, were dusted off and reworked when the Floyd entered Britannia Row studios to work on their next album. The songs were renamed 'Dogs' and 'Sheep' as per Waters' new 'concept' demanded. 'Pigs' and 'Pigs On The Wing' complete the album.
I saw the Animals tour in 1977. They played the entire Animals album, took a break, then played the entire Wish You Were Here album, then some Dark Side for an encore, Tampa Stadium, 77,000 people!

As extensive are the Pink Floyd records, you rightly do justice in explaining them as mini documentaries rather than bloated reviews. It’s always exciting to watch your efforts even though everything is known by some of us here. So 2 thumbs up 👍👍 for you!
Another channel that provides the similar experience is @polyphonic
Thank you for this video. I’m an obsessive fan of their music. I’ve read, travelled and watched extensively on the Floyd topic. Animals is one of my favorite albums in many ways. I’m extremely impressed at your writing and succinct historical review of the album. Absolutely excellent. I’ve subscribed and will watch more. Again thank you and excellent work!
Great work on these Floyd episodes of your series. I’m a huge fan and a bit of skeptic to some of these videos. But you, sir, have done a great job. Well researched and informative. Looking forward to part 2.
your work is amazing. I'm from Brazil and I love your videos man,you do a fantastic job. I'm sure you deserved more recognition
congrats again
The pig breaking free and landing on a farm is somewhat poetic
I gave this suggestion and they made it! Massive thanks, Geek, love your channel!
Animals (in my opinion) is Pink Floyd at the peak of their powers playing more like a jamming session.
The album has stood the test of time and is just as relevant today as it was upon release.
Great video 👍
Well said, and fully agree on all your points.

Thanks.
So awesome.
My favorite Floyd album by far.
-Which Pink Floyd album is your favorite?
-Yes!
An awsome video about an awsome album!
Animals was always my favorite Pink Floyd album.
Man, your videos are awesome. I think your channel is one of the best in the whole youtube world, about music history, info and reviews. Dont stop making these great videos. Greetings from Barcelona.
Take care ;-)
My favourite album by Pink Floyd 👍❤️😎
Love these videos on my favorite band, very well done as usual.
GREAT JOB!!!!!
Can't wait for part two!!!!
🐕🐷🐑
Was waiting a long time for this it seems! Thank you. Very nice. A lot of new information. Great show btw.
Pink Floyd rules man
@ how manly of you to say.
VINYL REWIND MOST UNDERRATED UA-cam CHANNEL OF ALL TIME. VIDEOS ARE ALWAYS PHENOMENAL I LOVE YOU
IMHO, Animals is their peak as a band. It’s the most coherent, most focused, and most concise statement as a band.
Great video! I swear I had just put out my copy of Animals to listen to and right after this appeared on youtube, so of course I had to see this first in order to give the spin more flavor.
Cant wait for part two.
very interesting for a vinyl nerd, record store geek. animals is my favorite Pink Floyd LP.
Please keep this pink floyd videos comin! I absolutly love them!!
Everything about this videos are genius!
Somehow they make the world okey for a few minutes❤
Roger didn't "kick Richard out of the band", there was a GENERAL agreement in the band, that Ricks coke problems was too much to handle and that he didn't do diddly squat.
That rings true to me...
Rick is all over Animals. There are so many great keyboard passages!
@@Azazagoth You do know he doesn't like anything he did on Animals.... Right????
Such a an awesome video. Your videos never disappoint and this one went far above and beyond. Thank you making this documentary.
You got the concept of dogs spot on which I think many have gotten wrong by just associating it with the police. Much appreciated. 👍
Impressive, your series on Pink Floyd continues to amaze me, THANKS!!!!
I’ve been looking forward to this
Stunning work. Keep it up!
I was waiting for it since you released the three videos for The Wall. This is awesome too! Thank you
Animals is a masterpiece!
This is great!!! Animals doesnt get as much attention as the other big albums , animals became my favorite floyd album after hearing it on vinyl when I was 15 , much love to this album big pace in my heart
I bounce between Animals and Final Cut as my top PF album. Depends on my mood
Love the final cut. Many people overlook it. Much better then the wall i think. But my favorite might have to be obscured by clouds
I never liked Final Cut, no matter how i tried. Obscured by Clouds is the most overlooked album in history
@@patricksommer3971 for early PF Obscured is my favorite with Meddle as my number 2
The Final Cut is heavy man. It needs a special mood to feel it.
@@postdan28 that was the album that got me into PF. Not Now John specifically
The dogs are the work of Rick Wright.
@@joeysplats3209 thanks!
Props.
My favorite part of the video is Algie causing all kinds of trouble down at the airport. Of course, he was only playing up to his billing.
Such great introspection, I've heard this record hundreds of times and this somewhat cleared up the theme and added to my love for it. Great job!
There are early versions of both "Dogs"and "Sheep". The early version of Dogs (called you gotta be crazy) was awesome. I would highly recommend it. I feel like it's just as good as the later album version, though for different reasons
The Animal's demos exist too o UA-cam
I agree that the 74 version of You've Got to be Crazy is great but the 75 version is just toothless compared to versions before and after.
@@PinkFloydBootlegs You mean Eric Burdon's band? I love House of the Rising Son.
I saw Pink Floyd at Empire Pool Wembley in 1974 before the release of wish you were here.
The second half of the show was the full dark side of the moon with an encore of echoes.
The first half was three songs
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Raving and Drooling (sheep)
You've Got to Be Crazy (Dogs)
I was surprised when wish you were here came out that the other two songs were not on it.
Then image when I heard the two songs on animals but under different names.
Its almost like New Floyd.
Wow! Thankyou so much. Very informative and interesting.
Certainly one of the top four.
Animals is my favorite PF record.
Great video! And Animals is hands down the best Floyd album.
Richard Wright deserved a writing credit on dogs atleast. he has 2 synth solos on it and one of them goes on for 4 or 5 minutes straight
Well thank you Roger just so happens to be my favorite Floyd album.
Snowy also did some excellent work on Richard Wrights first solo album, Wet Dreams, which I HIGHLY recommend
Agreed- in fact he is a highlight of Wet Dream and the reason I became a fan ever since
Funky Deux!
Just an INCREDIBLE album that was nothing like ANYTHING. This band was up there with the big boys.... they ARE the big boys.
Seriously, dogs is my favorite song of all time
Been waiting for this for so long, so happy it's finally out
THANK GOD they didn't use the cover with the kid walking in on his parents.
Animals is my favorite Pink Floyd album. One of my best albums of all time
Sadly......'Animals' COULD have been a double-album......if only they had ALSO included some tracks for chickens, horses & cows.
I agree ☝️
I guess that would then have been the barnyard album?
Not my favourite Floyd (see above) but, yes, Animals could (and probably should) have made a double-album. I love your suggestion of chickens, horses and cows. Orwell would've liked that.
Just learned so much about Pink Floyd. Thx Vinyl Rewind
I hated Animals when I first brought it. However it is now my favourite Floyd album. The lyrics and songs are amazing and Gilmours guitar playing supports the aggressive songs with some his most stinging and razor sharp guitar playing.
I think he leaned pretty heavily on the Telecaster for that album and you can hear it.
Lol nice way to not give Roger Waters any credit.
Dark Side is probably the better album of the two, but Animals is just more fun to listen to.
Its definitely my favourite album consistently
