  • As greenhouse gases warm the Earth, our oceans play a significant role in absorbing heat that helps regulate rising temperatures. But as writer and narrator Robert Krulwich explains, there is a huge price to pay for heating the oceans. He explains why in this first of a series of "CBS Sunday Morning" video essays, based on the work of Aatish Bhatia. Animation directed and designed by Nate Milton. Music by Buck St. Thomas.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

The sad fact is that as much as many people (who believe in man-made climate change) think it is possible to mitigate the approaching disaster most have no understanding of the acidificaton of the oceans and how much oceans have heated up. Both of those are facts that can not be reversed in decades, only centuries. i.e. Even with a cessation of CO2 production AND removing "legacy" CO2 from the atmosphere we still have those huge oceans making uncomfortable climate for us for centuries.

Judish, humans are pushing earth to a new norm and eventually a mass extinction. There are parts of earth where large amount of people, agriculture, wild life and pets are dying from drought and heat wave and heat stroke. Coal, Oil and Natural gas "carbon" is what caused the last mass extinction 55 million years ago and humans are burning and pushing that carbon back into the atmphere. Currently humans are burning a record 34 billion tons of carbon+oxygen = co2 into the atmphere. Judith, the PETM of 55 million year or mass extinction was 100 times slower, lasted five to 10,000 years and eventually made life on earth uninhabitable. Humans need to depopulate, the Economy needs to decouple and the brakes on the economy need to slow down. Billionaires need to be banned making a profit from earth and other humans.

@@Nepthu 100% through mathematics. Do we need to count as fast as super computers, or perhaps the trillions of operations super computers do, per second, in order to come up with computers that do that? Do we need to have, FIRST, been to L2 (Lagrangian Point 2), roughly 1 million miles away from earth, in order to send a space craft or a space telescope there?
      No.
We used basic knowledge of Newtonian physics, modern and ancient rocketry knowledge, knowledge of General Relativity (about time differentials near or away from massive objects like the moon, the earth, the sun, etc., which DISTORTS space and time)...
Do you need to use a bucket to take out all of the water of Lake Michigan or Lake Superior or Lake Erie... before you know "exactly" how many buckets there are in each lake? No.
You use the best surveying methods, using the best tools (sonar, laser, old fashion sticks, a real bucket to scoop up one real bucket of water to see its density and volume size, etc), and you estimate how large each body of water is, how deep on average they are, etc. and you use elementary school math to help you come to a good approximation as to how many buckets each lake holds.
Scientists don't only know to very precise degree how much water the earth have; they know how many atoms the earth has... how many atoms there are in the known universe, etc. The margins they get it "wrong" are so small, they're not important.
If you had $5B and you're off by $5,000 in your accountancy, would you be that terribly unhappy? Would you spend hours or days looking for that 1/100 of a cent-worth on the $100 dollar bill?

Well that doesn't matter, because every joule of heat you put into the ocean is going to be a joule of heat that is still there. It only means that even if you turned off the global warming now, that it would still keep things hotter than it should be for that much longer. But no I'm not impressed by converting it into 5 atomic bombs per second, because that is over the entire surface of the Earth, all 200 million square miles of it, or 150 million square miles covered by water.

At our distance from the Sun space is hot (394 K) not cold (5 K).

There is no extra energy, you purposefully misrepresent what the green house gas effect is and use calculations using incorrect values to give the illusion you that have any credibility. Your garage “experiment” is published on a site that specifically spreads disinformation on the green house gas effect, your video link was to your own page, and you are a known spammer on many scientific and fringe forums. This is interesting and thought provoking... But this planet has been going through cycles for eons.. If you look back in time this planet was once a. giant ball of ice... and it thawed and it heated up.. And the volcanoes have had lot to do with the climate too...oh and the sun???... Well.... be thanful it's way out there.... 🌎

    And 288 K to 289 K is trivial.

Nothing lasts forever. The Bible says the world will end. Now science simply agrees.

    • @TheDarkDresser
      @TheDarkDresser 2 роки тому +1

The Bible didn't mean that the earth will literally end/be completely destroyed.
During the times of Noah, the Great Flood destroyed wicked humans, not the literal earth.
The Bible also said that the earth will be here forever.
      Ecclesiastes 1:4
“One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.”
      Psalms 37:29
“The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.”
      Isaiah 45:18
“...God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited....”
So, although humans have damaged the earth, they will never destroy it, such as in a nuclear war or due to abuse; the Bible did say that God will destroy humans who are destroying the earth:
      Revelation 11:18
"...thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants... and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.”

what a horrible analogy and image, Hiroshima bombs (also most Americans, narrator included, have no idea how to pronounce Hiroshima. It's not "-shEEma" but "-shima"
The oceans are saying "enough" heat.. why or how? this animated propaganda explains nothing at the end.

Are you asserting that, to scientists, "theory" means the same as "conjecture"?
Due to the necessity of falsifiability, a scientific theory is the PINNACLE of scientific achievement. It takes an absurd amount of time and effort to produce sufficient evidence for a hypothesis to become a theory.
Facts are the produced by mathematics alone.
Do you raise the same stink when you encounter references to Atomic Theory? Have you never questioned why, after all this time, it's still referred to as Atomic Theory rather than "Atomic Fact"?
