Possibly my favorite Metallica solo
Once I heard Kirk say this was one of his most favorite songs to play in concert. They guys were talking and mentioning they were going to cut it from the set list that day and Kirk wasn't having it, it was so cute!!!!
Maybe my favorite Metallica solo, and definitely in my top 15 all time of any genre!

A solo isn't so much credited as "writing" bc it _embellishes_ an already written track.

@@estuardobatres3927 The composition/structure of a song has a distinction from solos. In almost all cases, it goes this way, roughly speaking:
The band writes a song, then the solo is laid upon the already existing material.
Also it would be confusing if Kirk had writing credits because *_most_* Metallica songs have solos. I would imagine - given that information - the next immediate thought you might have is: "ok, but did he write any riffs or-" . . .as if the _writing_ portion of a track is something more distinct to list credits for?
I'm going too deep into this, lol no hard feelings, just love the semantics of good ass music

Yeah this is a really solid track. It was largely absent from their live sets for a long time but they started sprinkling it in a little more starting a little over a decade back. Kirk in particular is a big advocate for it, no surprise given the long solo section.
This refers to a comment from the FFWF video: Even though you've heard For Whom the Bell Tolls, maybe you can throw a reaction to one of the live versions into the mix here. Lars went on to add more to the drum parts over time, with additional double bass fills and the like. Kirk also throws in an extended solo at the end that's not on the album. There are so many versions that I'm not sure what the absolute "best" is - Seattle 89 and San Diego 92 have tons of fans of course - but the S&M 1999 version might be interesting for you to check out. I feel like seeing how it goes over on stage might help you see why it's such a big song for them.
