Dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all the latest movies and series on Instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother for the last couple of days =)
I discovered Colin Hay and Men at Work in the 1980s...and this particular song in the past few years. Thank you for this tutorial. Wish I could hear you sing it. Cheers from Illinois, USA.
Colin definitely plays it in DADGAD at least in the vids I have watched including the Etown vid. I was there and watched him tweak his tuning. Doesn’t really matter but most of these “lesson” vids have it all “wrong" as long as we’re playing our guitars is all that matters. Thanks for posting.
@@DrewNiemannsUA-camChann I have no doubt that is the case. Like I said, I know it’s DADGAD in the videos I’ve watched and when I saw him do it live. I’ve also learned and play the song in DADGAD and confirmed his fretting.
Yes, this tuning is close but not quite right. I'm fairly certain the tuning Colin used for the original studio recording on Transcendental Highway was (from low to high) C-G-C-F-C-C (this video has all of this correct except for the lowest string, which Kieran tuned to a D instead of all the way down to a C. For what it's worth, this tuning is very close to DADGAD one whole step down. The only difference is the 2nd string - taking DADGAD down a whole step you would get a G on the 2nd string instead of the C that Colin tuned up to. The E-Town version is definitely a whole step higher, and I believe Alchemical Adventures is right - Colin is using DADGAD. Makes a lot of sense - to take the original tuning up a whole step would mean tuning the 2nd string all the way up to a D, which is a step and a half. I would be nervous about breaking a string! Happy strumming!
@@harwoodferguson529 I think you’re correct across the board. I just received my mule resonator after waiting almost a year so I am deep into open G tuning now.
I love this video I was playing it wrongly. I was playing C and sliding the chord up a step and then to G but it had none of the intonation and ring to it you positively have to open tune
This is the only lesson not suggesting DADGAD for this tune. This sounds much more accurate. And, I absolutely love this tuning. Lots of good music to be found in this one. Thanks for sharing!
Actually, in the live version it’s a simple DADGAD tuning. With a much easier fingering on the fret board with much richer tomes that resound deeply creating a more somber mood for the vibe of this song.
@@dugsbugs1 "Apples" are only a reference to fruit. You can list many types of fruits, but they are still referred to as "Apples." In what universe does your logic make sense? Wrong tuning = Wrong tuning
@@johnhaddon2056 This came through in my notifications for a comment I posted 9 years ago. It doesn't really matter anymore because this guy made up his own tuning anyway which was completely wrong. I and many others refer to DADGAD in the spoken words of DAD-GAD that was my logic but it doesn't really matter. If you tune down then it becomes your tuning and if you put a capo on then it becomes something else but I will still refer to it as the DAD-GAD tuning. Drop D is not referred to as DADGBE and Double Drop D is not DADGBD. That's why they have names. Sorry if I upset you.

Definitely tuned differently than here.
I just read that Colin does it in two different tunings depending.

Lovely session with you. One of these days please give us your version of the song straight through.. Wonderful.
Really solid, easy to follow tutorial. Thanks for putting it together!
What a great guy. Great, natural teaching style for us bedroom players (ie. the "twiddly bits"). Thank you for sharing:)
Hear hear 😊
Perfect. Thank you!

bro i was so frustrated with that thank you so much
Thanks for the tutorial. It’s was great and learning that tuning makes the sound so rich. 👍
Fortnite WoW you are most welcome glad it helped.
Excellent music lesson. Thank you.
Thanks for taking time to put this together.
You are most welcome
you have a good ear to be able to put that together. I think Colin Hay actual does it in DADGAD, as others have mentioned. But still, impressive!
This tutorial is absolutely perfect for someone who doesnt care about perfection
Good video - I'm just rediscovering Colin Hay and you've made him more accessible. I'll be checking out the rest of your videos.
beautiful. thank you! (what's a twiddly bit? ;) )
excellent tutorial i like the way you presented it. very well done

Thanx I use mostly D Model tuning dadgad
this was a lot of help! thanks
thanks bro!
I love the twiddly bits. 😂
Wrong from what he plays live. Please help me in finding how Colin plays it.😓

The correct tuning is DADGAD
They are both right tunings. After some research I found that Colin uses both tunings in different recordings.
Everyone else seems to be saying the guitar should be tuned in DADGAD. What’s going on here?
Actually, in the live version it’s a simple DADGAD tuning. With a much easier fingering on the fret board with much richer tomes that resound deeply creating a more somber mood for the vibe of this song.
For those of you who claim it's DADGAD is it played the same way?
The opening, yes, but that's all.
Tuning should be : D.A.D.G.A.D. This is close, but not quite there. Thanks!
Its tuned down a whole step to C. But right idea
Not the same tuning...

Great player, terrible teacher. Sorry, but had to call it as it is!
Thanks Terry. It’s funny you say that because this was recorded 9 years ago. Since then I’ve become an actual teacher. 😁
Actual Tuning = 6 (C) 5 (G) 4 (C) 3 (F) 2( F) 1 (C)
