They gave the fox Pixar mom hips, there's no way they didn't know what they were doing. On a more serious note, I really like that they made her be a fun character on her own instead of just being a love interest for Mr. Wolf.

Yeah that is one overlooked great aspect of the film in terms of character dialogue. Wolf and Fox are constantly flirting in a rather organic way. It really feels like two people flirting, where they have chemistry, but also like f#%ing with each other.
But, as you said, that's not her whole character. She rather developed having essentially been the Bad Guys, but having already gone through her maturing moment a few years before.

I think what makes Diane such a great character is that even though she's clearly the love interest, they didn't tear away from the plot to cram it in. It's just, natural. She comes off as a genuine being who wants to see wolf succeed because *spoilers* she already has. She also is super dynamic in her role as mastermind turned governor and her skills showing off both actually strengthen the main plot instead of distracting from it. On top of that her character (and spider) are just top notch aesthetics that, even if you deny yourself turning a furry, she definitely will have brought some to the fluffy side... she can dance AND fight like... what else could she be?

    • @neutronalchemist3241

Diane is a great character, and she would be even without the exagerated ninja skills. She's smart, she's in a position of power thanks to her own skill, she's in control, she doesn't need the bad guys, and she doesn't need to help them, but she does, and she pulls all the right strings. She's supportive, and defiant when she has to be. All of that while being clearly interested in Mr. Wolf, and without sense of superiority. Without the "smug" that ruins so many female characters. Sincerely having fun.

That is a very good summary of my feelings on it. Just because you like anthro art doesn't make you a furry. It's identifying yourself with the community. Same with the Brony community.
I consider myself like Saber actually. I love the creativity of anthro art and the furry community, but I don't identify with the community like I did/do with the brony community.
That said, Saber very clearly has a character crush on Diana. Like i noted you clearly can hear the genuine emotion in his voice😆
That doesn't make him a furry, just he is very drawn to her character in an infatuation like way. This isn't really uncommon. It's why we have the terms waifu and husbando, lol.

I love how _Into the Spiderverse_ kinda created this whole new playground for 3D animation to take inspiration on traditional 2D animation and _The Bad Guys_ is packed with. I loved how expressive the characters are and how well animated the action scenes are; the characters stretch in such a fluid manner that is mesmerizing to watch. The voice acting is also top notch. The plot is not groundbreaking or anything, and I feel they could've explored the heist themes better to really nail that "Ocean's Eleven" energy, but overall I had fun.
My only question is that: why isn't _everyone_ in the film anthro animals? It is a bit weird to have a handful of characters being animals and the rest being humans, and it's not even explained why is that. It doesn't bother me per se since the human characters are pretty well designed. But would make more sense if every character was an animal, imho.
I also agree that there was a lacking character development on Piranha, Shark and Spider. They really feel like wasted characters as the focal point is on Wolf and Snake. But who knows, if Dreamworks sees this as opportunity to capitalize and we get a sequel, maybe they could explore those characters better. Their dynamic is good enough and I wouldn't mind seeing more of Diane (not a furry I swear).

I thought it was hilarious that the main characters were the only ones who were anthros. similarly, how all the characters are named Shark, Tarantula, etc. and then there's Diane Foxington 😂for a movie like this, the setting doesn't need to make sense logically, it only needs to support the feeling of the story.

You know I was thinking the same thing, and then I realized that maybe the creators kept it that way to represent that anthro characters where just reflections of the nature of certain people irl..? the typical charming sweet ML with the personality of a wolf, the goody goody guinea pig (idk why he reminded me of James Cordon), and the typical sexy FL with the personality of a vixen. Their characters had personalities that's why they were kept that way. If you saw the movie you would have noticed that some of the animals are just normal even in the same species.

Look look look, this is for kids right? This could be some kids first movie at least let children establish the conventional plot patterns in normal movies because then the status quo will change making it harder for what is an expected outcome in reality versus fiction which adds a whole new difficulty layer.
What is the plot twist if the plot twist was expected because everyone's doing the same thing or crazy thing
then what plot twist would you add to that twist to make it unique for adult films?
The problem is met at ahead when executives( who ultimately Greenlight these film projects) who have to (I assume) look at conventional plot patterns, the status quo, what is interesting, and what do kids deserve to build a foundation of a plotline that is easy to follow and not trying to be so unpredictable or crazy that it doesn't make sense.
I'm not sure if I got my point across.

Also, I think another thing that’s worth mentioning, is that, the only person who can decide if they’re a furry, is the person themselves.
I see a lot of folks, especially younger viewers who become fans of anthro animal characters but then, legitimately feel afraid of being called a furry, not wanting to be called something they’re scared of being called, or because of the bullying that could lead to, and while I do think it’s possible to identify with a community while still being afraid to publicly be a “part” of it, and that experience is of course valid,
I think that in situations like this it’s just also important to note, that really is up to the person themselves to chose if they want to be a part of the community and no one deserves to feel afraid of being labeled it. Because it’s up to them to chose if they want to.

When I was in creative writing class, my prof mentioned that the readers being able to predict a story isn't bad. It's a mark of good writing. You're planting the seeds and, hopefully, will get a good payoff. I dislike when people trash a movie because they guessed what happened. Hell, there's a UA-camr I watch that is in the middle of a series. And for years he's seen us guess what this character's backstory was. He was so excited when it was revealed because he knew so many of us had guessed correctly and wanted to see our reactions.

Then it becomes like, why bother going through it if you already know all the significant story beats, you won't be getting anything new from it.
Like example, when you watch something and know the hero will make it through and stop the bad guy, that's ok.
It's fun to find out HOW they will do it, who they will meet, and how the character will change through the story.
But if all of those are known too, and nothing changes, then you start to question the point of going through with it.

@@kamikeserpentail3778 Yeah it also does depend on the story. I have read such stories that do fall into that story type. But it does depend. But I think a lot of people have fallen into the idea that predictability = a poorly written story. Which isn't necessarily the case. It's something that heavily depends on the individual story.

A good detective/mystery story will plant clues that allow an attentive audience to find the solution (either in whole or significant part(s)) before or at the same time as the characters. And less attentive audiences should be able to realize what the clues were either in hindsight or on a second viewing. Iirc Hbomberguy talks about this in his Sherlock video.
An example from Murdoch Mysteries (spoilers)
There's a father and twin sons with heterochromia. One of the sons was given away as a child bc they were poor. If you paid attention to the old family photo with the kid they kept, the eye colours are flipped from the guy claiming to be that kid. So at some point after that photo was taken, the kids switched places and the question of "where is the kid that was given away?" becomes "what happened to the kid that was kept?" (Which has another, harder to figure out, clue to it)

being predictable and being badly written to a trope are two different things. Like, let's take her being a master thief. That was predictable. However, it had a good payout for showing to the story about someone defying their 'nature' to do better which made it necessary for the story.
Had she just came in and done some weird ninjutsu shit and then said "My daddy made me train, but hey, I believe you can be a better person" that wasn't predictable, but it isn't helping the story.

The thing about DreamWorks, speaking as someone who used to work there, is that the company absolutely thrives best when it functions as a counter-culture voice to the status quo currently in place for Kids & Family animation. It's the whole reason the studio came to be: To counter the animated storytelling approaches established by Disney. So we got things like Antz (not great, but it was a direct fuck you to A Bugs Life), Road to El Dorado, Prince of Egypt, and of course, Shrek.
Their worst work is when they try to fall in line with the status quo or cave into increasing pressures from S&P (standards and practices) and consumer trend decision-making (AKA, "this thing is currently popular, so we should do this thing"). A lot of the recent bad stuff can be attributed to the NBC/Universal merge who have a tighter grip on the type of content produced.
That said, Steven Spielberg once visited the campus and said it would behoove the company to consider making adult-themed projects, and while I have no idea if that's going to happen, the general consensus among employees was that, yes, that would probably be a fantastic next step. But they're beholden to their NBC Universal Studios overlords, so, it's up in the air.
Point is, when DreamWorks just does its own thing and chooses to be the "bad boys/girls/folks" of the industry - not even in genre, but by just pushing the types of bold narratives studios like Disney aren't brave enough to do in fear of losing their bottom line $$$ - we see among their best work. The Bad Guys is a direct and clear cut example of this both in packaging and messaging.
I hope this is a lesson for DW to stick to this approach, because it's what put them on the map to begin with, and it's what makes them shine brightest.

Wolf and Snake's relationship and struggles throughout the movie was definitely the highlight of the story for me. I like the other characters a lot, they each have their own charm and role to play in the various scenarios of the film, but with the exception of Diane who is a great foil for Wolf, they mostly feel simplistic or just not that important to the story. however I don't think that's a bad thing! ensemble casts can really bog down the pace of a story if not handled really well and I think the more streamlined approach taken here is to the film's benefit. the animation is probably the biggest strength of the movie overall. I love the emphasis on key frames which give the action a comic book-like feel. finally I would say the mashup of a gritty and glitzy setting with cutesy, cartoony characters just works so well. it definitely reminded me of Zootopia, but throwing all the debatable thematic content of that film out the window in favor of maximizing style. The Bad Guys isn't deep or challenging, it's just a well-executed, thrilling ride.

And the relationship between Wolf and Snake had a lot more chemistry than Wolf and Diane, dont @ me. But I do love how Diane isnt just a generic love interest, she has her own motives, her own wants and personality. Also Wolf wasnt becoming a good guy to get in her favor, he did it because he wants a better life for his crew. I always hated the trope where impressing a hot person who the main character only knows for a few days is their primary motivation for getting better. This movie is stellar.

And i love how that diane didn't become a typical love interest for wolf. The one where wolf will be asked to choose between her or his lifetime friends. His motive of becoming good is bcuz he wanted to give a better life for him and his friends. I respect that so much, kudos for not doing the love interest. It made the movie fresh and exciting.
Also can we talk about that ending? Absolutely good! Even tho its a "bad guy got caught" ending, but the gang didnt just get free without consequences. They paid the price for their actions and became better person, but not 100% good either and they need to work on it (shown from the after prison scene). And how they caught the guinea pig is also an unexpected one, i thought he'll be able to recover from that without diane telling her real identity but the ending is kinda unexpected.

Mr. Wolf and gang are only 'bad' because that's how society sees them. That face is the one she'll be known for, as Judy earned hers when hustling nick. Favorite character, Tarantula and wolf being my second fave. All the characters were awesome enough to keep me entertained. Love the amount of inspiration various sources, besides lupin the III. Mostly loved how the human characters take inspiration from many artists. Including Akria Toriama's designs of humans, the one shot opening of the film, clearly inspired from Quintin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994). The first ever long shot in a Dreamworks Animated Film. With more mixes of styles from directors such as Luc Besson's The Fifth Element (1997), Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes (2009), Michael Mann’s Heat (995) a film i still need to check out, Steven Soderbergh's Ocean Eleven (2001) Need to check that one too and even from anime and manga series such as Beastars (2016 - 2020), Sherlock Hound (1984 - 1986) and Lupin III (1967 - Present) as well as the French-Belgian animated film Ernest & Celestine (2012), LOVE THAT FILM! due to influenced the approach to the characters. This is a film that took the best forms and influences of the entertainment industry and brought forth a great work of art and with this series of books, with many stories to tell on the big screen. I hope they give the green lit for a sequel. Great video as always dude! I plan on seeing this again theaters and it's still going strong in my home theater here!

I always save these videos for after I watch the films in question if I'm interested in them. And it took me FAR TOO LONG to watch The Bad Guys. BUT I finally did and I absolutely adored this movie from opening to end. It was wonderfully written, had me actually laughing a few times, the action sequences are phenomenal, characters are relatable and well-written. The whole thing was just absolutely great! It's the first movie in a while that I wasn't staring at my phone through half of it.
But what strikes me the most (especially as an artist) was the art style. So beautifully stylized. Making everything feel so fluid and yet keeps things balanced enough to where you're not thrown into this weird 'mixed media' feel. It feels more like 'blended media' because having these well shaded 3D styled characters with the eyes being in a much more 2D kind of style was an amazing touch. It gave way to the cartoonish expressions without losing that more refined look.
Dreamworks knocked it out of the park with this one and I'd love to see them do more like this in the future.

With it being a "heist" movie I figured there would be fake outs but with it being DreamWorks I also didn't figure it all to be unpredictable, but I have to hand it to them the only two things that I didn't actually predict were the mayor being the scarlet paw and for the protagonists to only get a singular year in prison for the amount of wealth that they had stolen, I understand as a book ending they needed to find some way to leave prison but even in being laxidasical with their in universe laws a singular year is ridiculous

Besides our joke, we loved watching the small details like the fur moving in the wind, looking at the details in the eyes, just noticing small things like that were great.
The only thing that made me mad (at myself) was not realizing that they had an Ocean's (11, 12, and 13) reference when the characters mentioned that Wolf is pulling a Clooney. I just watched "The Bad Guys" in Peacock and I have to say....I really love this movie. Too bad that I didn't planned to anticipate the film for seeing at theaters so why not check out and I heard a lot of people found it enjoyable to see so I expect to be another DreamWorks Animated film to be an original than last year's two worst DreamWorks films I hated so much so I'm glad this one stepped in another direction and I have a fun time watching it because it's a very gorgeously 2D combines a 3D animated film with a heist genre into an anthropomorphic enjoyable film. The characters are nicely designed and Mr. Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell) was the best heist bad dude ever (even girls will love this hot wolf so hug them ladies, if you were a furry lovers), the bad animal characters were nice, and Diane is very cute Fox character and man, I love foxes and she's very pretty and looks attractive and Zazie Beetz just nailed her sassy foxxy style. The animation is great with a term of 2D style, insane action sequences, great detailed story with a blend based on the children's book, and its silly, but appreciated film that takes a DreamWorks new step of making a great film since How to Train Your Dragon, The Prince of Egypt, and all that jazz (Over the Hedge). Nice, do more things DreamWorks! I love how you managed to create so unique and it's great to watch it unless theaters to see it instead of streaming but I'm glad seeing in Peacock in a big TV screen. This probably my favorite 2022 film and even Turning Red 🦊 is still my favorite 2022 animated film of all time, they both do great. Good saber, we've been witnessed to see Diane as her hot figure since seeing Jessica Rabbit's crotch in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Anyways, such a nice movie and see it again. I love this movie and such cutesy furry film I love seeing it.
I bet Mr. Wolf will either ship to Diane or Porsha (Sing 2) in a threesome style with a group dance sequence any day.

This was a solid, fun film, and certainly a step in the right direction for Dreamworks. I really liked the fast-paced animation and the dynamic between the characters, especially between Snake and Wolf, and the latter with Fox.

I agree, I hope they go in this direction from here.

I keep saying that the predictability is a strength to this film instead of a weakness
Because they let the actors and animators just shine and do what they want. No attempt to feign complexity, but hey that's fine.
And personally one or two twists got me really well because of how they were done not what they were.

I watched it too my guy. And I loved every minute of it, plus a personal note: I don't deny that I'm a furry. There's nothing wrong with it, it's a choice. I don't care what people have to say about me, I'm proud of who I am.

I literally just came out of the theatre from watching it. I loved the movie. The story was great. And I cant express- especially as someone who loves drawing- how much I loved the art style. It was so amazing.

I will admit, first minute into the movie, it already made me chuckle a little. I will watch the rest of it as soon as I finish this video.

My first experience with this movie was when I was walking past an advertisement for it. The female fox character wasn't even on the poster but I took one look at this and the designs and thought to myself "I'd bet literally everything that furries worked on this". Glad to see I wasn't wrong lmao
